Overall Satisfaction with Evernote

We use Evernote to organize market intelligence and trends in our industry. One of my colleagues and I both read news articles and come across other sources. We use the web clipper and the Outlook plugin. Once a day I then create an email to the rest of the staff that includes a link to any saved articles. This is how we all stay informed and able to speak intelligently to clients about the state of the legal market.
  • Tag articles with multiple keywords
  • Save internet articles and remove ads and items in sidebars
  • Save emails
  • Search full text
  • We sometimes have problems with the sync taking too long. Most of the time when you save an article it comes up in Evernote right away, but other times it takes 5-10 minutes.
  • The ability to email an article could be improved. It puts it into the body of the email, but I would prefer it as a pdf attachment
  • We send a "table of contents" note once a day which gives a list of selected articles. It just gives the title of the item, and a link to open it in Evernote. It's sufficient, but it would be nice if it gave a preview of the first few sentences.
  • It is very time saving for us.
  • The ability to access from a mobile device is helpful when out of the office
  • Clients seem impressed when we can bring up relevant information quickly, and from the office or a mobile device when at an off-site meeting.
We used Zotero for a while. It's similar but we found it to be less user-friendly and sometimes buggy. The syncing time was also much slower, which was an issue with multiple users.
It has a lot of flexibility. I could see it being useful in lots of scenarios. From personal use to professional.

Evernote Implementation

Make sure you think about your tags. If you end up with multiple similar tags then things aren't grouped together as you might prefer. For instance if you have a tag called Disney and Walt Disney, this will split up your articles. Evernote makes it simple to correct, but I suggest you make sure your users look closely at the existing tags before creating new ones.
Yes - We started using the system right away for new information. Getting the older stuff in, so that everything is in one place, has been time consuming. Evernote makes the process as painless as possible, but we have 25 years worth of stuff!
Change management was a big part of the implementation and was well-handled - Some of our older employees weren't happy about the change, but not that they have been using it for a while, everyone is on board.
  • How to get older information into the system quickly
  • How to make sure that we did not create multiple similar tags
