Use Cases and Deployment Scope

My organization relies heavily on IBM Maximo since it is its main product. My organization specializes in offering support and implementation of IBM Maximo to third parties interested in having a robust and capable asset management system. We have specialists in customizing, offering support and implementing applications, scripts, and databases for Maximo.

Pros and Cons

Pros

Extensive asset tracking and management. IBM Maximo is extremely capable of handling all sorts of assets so you can track every detail and part of the lifecycle of an asset inside an organization.
Highly customizable. If the broad array of possibilities inside IBM Maximo still isn't suited for your specific application, it is possible to customize it to a very high degree so it can fit the needs of your organization.
Preventive maintenance and services. With IBM Maximo, it is possible to schedule all sorts of preventive maintenance for your equipment, maximizing the uptime of your systems and machinery and minimizing unforeseen events.

Cons

Hard to implement. A high number of resources and manpower is necessary to implement and upgrade IBM Maximo due to its robustness and number of functionalities.
Version fragmentation. Due to the challenge imposed by a version upgrade, it is common to find systems relying on legacy versions of Maximo which might become a challenge for the support team.
Unfriendly UI. The excess of functionalities and services available might become a challenge for a starting user. Although it is possible to customize the UI to fit the exact needs of each user, it is important to map exactly what each user needs.

Return on Investment

Being the core business of my organization, IBM Maximo had a complete ROI for our objectives. We are able to successfully maintain and offer multiple solutions based on our interaction with Maximo.
Based on our contracts, we are able to provide a great partnership with IBM thru Maximo and it's tools.
We are able to maintain our business with steady market growth based mainly on our offer of the IBM Maximo in various layers.

Likelihood to Recommend

IBM Maximo is highly flexible, being able to suit the needs of most of the business that relies on any sort of asset to operate accordingly. Out of the box, Maximo is better suited for companies with large inventories in multiple sites looking for a centralized tracking solution for all of its assets. But, with the proper customization and implementation, it is able to suit small business looking for an efficient solution to track it's inventory as well.

Hard to implement is a true statement, especially since there are too many organizations with too limited knowledge of the tool. This has two negative effects, 1) what could be configured is often not done through the configuration but through customization, i.e. programming and 2) With the limited knowledge the consultant are not able to demonstrate the best practices in the tool and are adopting to the customers requirements, since this create more billable hours for them. We have implemented Maximo in 2 - 3 months and we are developing best practices with Maximo to have a fast start. From there, when your business processes change, your Maximo product can adopt with you.
