Overall Satisfaction with NetSuite ERP

NetSuite is our primary accounting system. We have it integrated with a number of other third party solutions that streamline both the entering of data into NetSuite and the utility of extracted data from NetSuite. NetSuite is the backbone of all of our financial reporting.

Pros

  • Data syncing and access for a decentralized workforce
  • Fixed asset management
  • Customizability
  • Multicurrency
  • Multi entity
  • Product/Department/Location framework

Cons

  • Allocations
  • Multi year balance sheet reporting
  • Even with the cost of NetSuite factored in, I am saving on personnel costs because of the efficiencies we've gained from NS, such as templated journal entry uploads rather than data entry.
  • Product, department, location tagging and filters allow for the right levels of detail to be provided to business decision makers.
  • As a best in class platform, NetSuite has an amazing marketplace of third party solutions. Thanks to NetSuite, we have been able to implement fantastic AP automation, close management, forecasting, and business intelligence solutions.
There is some learning curve, and a relationship with a third party NetSuite expert is likely a must. It's also important to have or to train up one or more in house NetSuite power users for customization, report writing, chart of accounts management, etc. Despite all of that, it's a very pleasant system to use, particularly after automated workflows have been built for less technical team members.
There comes a point where companies outgrow QuickBooks due to the lack of dimensions, limited reporting, data integrity on prior periods, controls over user access and manipulation levels. However, Oracle and SAP type solutions are likely in the millions of dollars to acquire and customize. For us, NetSuite stood out as the best in class solution in this middle market range.

NetSuite is a great solution when a company outgrows QuickBooks. NetSuite handles multiple users very well, and being a cloud platform, there are no issues with data sync errors. The system can handle vast amounts of data, whether it be customer lists and transactions, large fixed asset registers, employee records, detailed credit card transactions, etc. NetSuite is also very customizable (for example, adding custom fields to group certain vendors, and then being able to report off of those custom fields), and that makes it work for so many companies in disparate industries.

If the need is for a wide group of people to have access, NetSuite's pricing might be prohibitive. This can be worked around by extracting NetSuite data to another third party repository. There are great third party tools to facilitate easy data extraction, BI, dashboarding, etc.
