Overall Satisfaction with Parallels Remote Application Server
Parallels [Remote Application Server] is being used across the entire organization to allow our staff secure cloud based access to our EMR. It allows us to deliver a legacy based applications to our users over a cloud based interface anywhere they may be working as long as they have some type of internet connection.
Pros
- Cloud based, no software to install for users to access the HTML5 interface.
- Simplicity of install. Very quick/easy to get up and running in minutes, not hours or days.
- Constant development. Always adding new features, improving existing features and efficiency. They also listen to customer needs.
Cons
- Active directory dependent. Would like to have other options for authentication outside of AD. Can use SSO with Google, etc but still needs to verify the user against AD for permissions.
- There are a log of group policy options that can be used, some directly Parallels related, others Windows OS/Terminal Services specific. Would be nice to have a collection or guide of best used GPO options for performance, security, etc.
- Allowed us to move to our 100% cloud based work model.
- Was much cheaper to run/maintain than Citrix was.
- Product is 100% inclusive of all options/features and support when purchased.
- Citrix Virtual Apps (formerly XenApp)
Also evaluated Dell Workspace and VMWare Horizon. Parallels [Remote Application Server] was the only product that fit our primary need of being 100% cloud based with no software to install on the clients. It's ease of use, lightweight deployment, and cost were added bonuses that we couldn't say no to. Constant updates and developments to keep the product current and secure make you feel good too.
A centrally managed console is always a good thing. Not only managing the settings, but publishing apps, desktops, and even pushing the updates to all the other servers is provided in one place. It save a lot of time not jumping from server to server to perform updates. You can also see your current usage, system resource usage, licensing information, and more from the RAS Console.
As stated in previous answers our company had a goal of being 100% cloud based. We no longer have a data center, users can use less expensive and more secure devices like Chromebooks and still access everything they need to perform their daily duties. No other alternative gave us this flexibility. Other products tested that had a web based interface still required some type of client software to be installed on a Windows or Mac device to allow full functionality.
The support of multiple hypervisors is a great feature that allows business to run or migrate to Parallels [Remote Application Server] not not have to reinvest in their hypervisor infrastructure if that already have one. If a hypervisor infrastructure does not exist, this flexibility allows even the smallest of deployments to be run a cost savings on platforms such as Hyper-V.
Being in healthcare alone is a big security project. Data breaches are all too common these days and the features presented in Parallels [Remote Application Server] really helps us keep our data secure. Multi-factor authentication helps reduce unauthorized logins, access control allows us to determine which users have access to specifics apps and data. Other options such as disabling clipboard transfers, disabling file downloads, and GPO options to prevent access to server data is critical to keeping an environment secure.
