Overall Satisfaction with Scale Computing HC3

Great value when large storage is needed and integrated into a hyper-converged solution. In our organization, it is mostly used for large file shares and legacy systems. It is used across the whole organization. We used it to significantly increase our overall storage for large file shares and legacy systems at a better price point than many systems. We also use the automatic backup to replicated to another HC3 at our DR site.
  • Backup and recovery--set it and forget it.
  • Remote hardware monitoring
  • Big storage at a reasonable price
  • Committed 1st-class support
  • File-based recovery takes too many steps.
  • Importing existing VMs from other hosts is too difficult and problematic, even with Carbonite software.
  • Sometimes imported VMs suffer from poor performance and cannot be modified to take advantage of optimal drivers, etc.
  • Coordinate with vendors who sell/distribute virtual appliances to have Scale pre-built virtual appliances, as they do for VMware and HyperV hosts making it easier to adopt Scale and advertise that Scale is an option for virtualization.
  • SSD cache fills up too quickly and a combination of SSD and HDD storage may not plan for enough cache, making performance suffer.
  • Some implementation and support specialists are too green and not ready to give the service expected by Scale and the customer.
  • ISOs that have been uploaded should be downloadable again, if needed, and replicated to other HC3s.
I would give a higher rating if we did not have a green tech who was out of their depth supporting us on a few occasions. Support is responsive and works diligently to resolve issues. You are able to speak with an engineer quickly, if not immediately.
We actually do not have not have business critical systems running on Scale. Since we already had an HP Simplivity environment, we chose to move most of our non-critical systems to Scale because of the better price point and ease of use.
  • Reduced our potential investment in big and legacy system environments.

Scale Computing HC3 is well suited due to its ease of use and cost per GB. It works well for big storage, some legacy systems, and DR backup and recovery.

It is not well suited for file-based recovery, import, performance (SSD/HDD version), SSD cache management/full, too few CPUs and RAM per unit when compared to the amount of storage available.
