Splashtop Solved All My Needs
Overall Satisfaction with Splashtop
I am a volunteer for a local non-profit, assisting with their technology needs. The organization houses a large second-hand store (accepting local donations) using the proceeds to assist in clothing local, low-income students. Their needs include many older volunteers that have a low understanding of technology. The organization has a network that includes a Windows file server and 5 desktop machines. Their network switch is advanced, connecting computers and VOIP in a shared environment. With the office located 9 miles from my home, I needed a solution for connecting remotely to resolve minor user issues and to provide proper server maintenance without the need for travel. I learned about Splashtop online and was pleased with the price of their basic plan. Decided to give it a try with their 7-day trial. The software was quite simple to configure and I was using it within minutes of deployment. Of course, my needs are minimal compared to teams managing large networks but I am confident the solution would work equally well in those environments.
Pros
- Remote Server Management
- Easy to understand user interface
- Allows me as a volunteer to spend more time on issues since travel is not needed
Cons
- A VPN would be helpful for some non-remote access duties
- As a volunteer for a non-profit, the only ROI for me is fuel savings since I pay for that myself.
My needs have been met perfectly and at a great price point. My past experience has mostly been with more expensive tunneling solutions that are typically clumsy, pricey and difficult to use. I am a fan of two-factor authentication and their implementation appears flawless. My past experience with numerous other solutions has been both good and bad. The security and verification features provided within Splashtop appear more than adequate.
The hardest part about installing Splashtop was driving 9 miles to the non-profit location. Once there, the software was installed within a few minutes (took my personal laptop to be sure it worked to avoid a second trip). Upon returning home, the software has been flawless and has already saved me several trips across town to solve relatively minor issues. The 7-day trial gave me plenty of time to verify my needs were being met prior to paying for activation.
Yes - As a volunteer, I took over (at the request of a friend) after the previous individual had suffered a heart attack and died. Since I had no prior knowledge of his experiences/practices, I had no idea what had been in use. There were other products installed on the file server but I had no credentials to try them out. So, my search was begun for a safe, secure, cost-effective solution and I found it in Splashtop.
