Overall Satisfaction with WatchGuard Network Security

WatchGuard firewalls are utilized for many of our clients. While overall a decent product, there are certain administrative issues such as issues with administering the firewalls via the WatchGuard Cloud. Further, while the basic firewall functionality and configuration capabilities are available, WatchGuard Firebox units seem to be missing some of the more advanced firewall and routing capabilities that other vendors in the mid-market space offer on their equivalent products.

Pros

  • Stable firmware
  • Easy to configure basic settings

Cons

  • Ability to locally administer cloud joined Firebox firewalls
  • Better IPv6 Support
  • Faster and more efficient SSL VPN
  • Firebox firewalls have provided an acceptable level of security and performance for our smaller clients.
  • Watchguard cloud (when it works) makes it much easier to administer firewalls.
It has always been an easy and pleasant experience when procuring WatchGuard products. Sales is quick and responsive. The pricing is reasonable. Estimated turnaround times are accurate. We have been satisfied with our sales and procurement experience.
While we utilize the basic security package on WatchGuard firewalls, we have other security products and platforms that we use to in place of WatchGuard's offerings. It's not a knock on their capabilities. It's just the way our stack is set up.
When WatchGuard Cloud works, it's great. The issue is that sometimes firewalls lose their connection to the cloud and have to be factory reset and re-provisioned. Other times, it takes a while to wait for WatchGuard Cloud to update the firewall. Longer than I've seen it take from other vendors. However, when it's working, it saves significant time making configuration changes and updates.
It's not bad, it's got exceptional. It's an excellent option in the small business market. Less so as the company grows larger and the complexity and requirements increase. It's an ok product without any huge glaring weaknesses. That said, there are better products and vendors out there. It really comes down to if you need the features and experience that those other products and vendors offer. If you don't, WatchGuard will likely meet your need and not give you grief in the process.

No

Did WatchGuard Network Security live up to sales and marketing promises?

No

Did implementation of WatchGuard Network Security go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy WatchGuard Network Security again?

Yes

Watchguard is well suited for small businesses without significantly complex networks and infrastructure. WatchGuard firewalls perform well on IPv4 networks and offer basic security features that match other vendors that target the small business market. WatchGuard firewalls are less appropriate for mid-sized business and larger. There is limited IPv6 support, and the firmware often lacks some or all of more advanced features that businesses that size often need.
