AdRoll

AdRoll is great for those who have a strong creative department and want the ability to retarget users who land on their site. AdRoll is also great for prospecting as you can upload your database and AdRoll will prospect lookalikes. For folks who want to track users on social (Facebook and Instagram), AdRoll does wonders. You also have the ability to email prospects which is another great way to build a unique database.

Basis DSP

Basis DSP would be well suited for smaller programmatic buyers with short campaign lengths and clients who are not super concerned with site transparency as well as people new to the programmatic space. Centro, owners of Basis, will also try to push you into selling campaigns their way (focusing on budget-based buying) so if you have existing campaign workflows you'll likely have issues trying to adopt their product to your existing workflow.

Pros

  • Customizability of visual ads is easy and efficient. I can make it look the way I want it with the words I need to use.
  • I think the reach not being limited to just Google but rather accross multiple channels is an advantage for AdRoll.
  • Has a great support team that is always ready to help out. They were particularly helpful when we were first trying to set up our first ad campaign.

Cons

  • They could make their documentation more easy to understand such that it is more user-friendly for first time users, so we don't have to reach out to support for more information.
  • They could have the functionality of more design options on the page. I had to externally make the ad have the background I wanted and upload it. But having editing capabilities on site would be easier.
  • I would like to see them expand into other aspects of advertising, not just remarketing and retargeting ads.

  • Conversion HTML pixels could be easier to set up revenue tracking on
  • No using existing customer lists in the platform
  • Doesn't accurately report in Google Analytics even with UTM codes

We have a dedicated account rep. She makes it seem like we are her only client, she is very responsive, helps each time we have a question and understands our campaign goals. Anytime we need support, our rep is available either email or call and if she is not going to be available, she will let us know ahead of time to provide back up and inform them of our current campaigns so they can better assist us.

There are a ton of tactics and strategy to implement in the DSP platform. There isn't really a selection of the different types of campaigns or tactics to choose from, you just have to learn as you go. Once you figure out the strategy and goal of the campaign it is very easy to implement the tactic and to achieve its goals.

We've previously tested Pocketmath and evaluated Beeswax. Pocketmath and Basis are roughly the same in terms of cost and inventory. However, Pocketmath's interface, while very attractive, is very difficult to use to deploy large scale campaigns quickly. It is definitely better-suited for a small organization with niche or very specific goals. The workflow and reporting are not what I would describe as familiar for someone who has previously used a DSP. That may be an attraction for some people, as DSPs are typically not user-friendly, but the interface makes reporting and optimizing at-a-glance more difficult, and there are many arbitrary controls in place to prevent archiving, removing, or resuming campaigns after a status change. For businesses that move quickly and reopen existing client relationships, this taxonomy can be challenging.Beeswax's interface is similar to that of Basis, but at a considerably higher cost. The main benefit we found to that technology during our trial were the predictive and visual reporting tools that enabled proactive optimization and easy to understand reports for the client success/services team

Return on Investment

  • We were able to convert free users to paid users because we could see they were very engaged but did not understand the value of our paid solution without a little push.
  • We were able to increase our user sign up conversion rate by retargeting engaged web visitors who DID NOT convert but should have.
  • We were able to increase our on-boarding conversion by targeting users who unsubscribed from our emails to encourage them to finish setting up their account.

  • Basis DSP allows us to reach users in many different places while controlling costs - access to major exchanges at a competitive bid rate allows us to provide a lot of added-value to clients without dramatically increasing the cost they incur.
  • The team is friendly, helpful, and responsive, so we don't have a lot of situations where we're locked in campaign downtime due to a customer service issue with negative downstream impacts to the bottom line.
  • Periodic reporting outages have resulted in campaigns that overpace and incur needless costs (however, this is certainly an exception, not the rule).
