Amazon SES

While most companies can get away with stock or lightly modified SaaS solutions, if email is absolutely core to your business, I'd recommend Amazon's Simple Email Service. It provides the lowest pricing outside of building up your own sender reputation, while providing the same flexibility and performance, especially if your application servers are already in AWS.
The drawback to all this power is that you need to dedicate engineering resources to building, modifying, and maintaining your email pipeline. If you can't justify those expenses, go with a SaaS product.

Constant Contact

Constant Contact is one of the keys to success for your business. If you are looking to stay in contact with your clients with a professional image, Constant Contact is your go-to tool. If you are not the creative type, their templates provide the marketing department for your business. For organizations, the ability to send out email blasts to your members is great. You are able to monitor your member engagement and follow-up if necessary. It's great watching who opens your email, how quickly they open the document and determine the best way to engage your members via mobile/desktop. As a consultant, I am able to recommend strategies for my clients based on how their members engage.

Pros

  • Low cost; I do not know anyone that can match their low cost unless you are in the free tier of G-Suite for work Gmail.
  • High reliability - messages do get delivered. We have had no issues.
  • Easy to set up the basics - generate the credentials and add it to your code.

  • Ease of use. It's simple to use though that comes with some limitations in what we can do easily (like the photo interface - which I find cumbersome and will get to that later). Our SOP for sending clinic emails is really, really short - which means there's less that can go wrong.
  • Functionality. Frankly, it does exactly what we need it to do. We send the same email a lot - we have bout 4 emails that we send and we send them a lot. CC makes that really straightforward.
  • Ubiquity. Everyone pretty much knows how to use it - we could bring in another user really simply and without any real training.

Cons

  • Could maintain a dashboard with the list of previously sent emails and their templates.
  • Amazon Simple Email Service dashboard could be made more user-friendly by including few HTML snippets so that they are readily available for testing.

  • Unless you are adept at HTML, customizing templates was a bit difficult.
  • There wasn't as much tracking ability on the back-end as we would have liked in order to properly map out email journeys for customer lists.
  • We had to up our budget in order to fit more contacts into the system, even though a lot of those we had were bouncing.

We are very pleased with what Constant Contact has done for our business and the benefits it has offered our dealers and distributors. The functionality offered is exactly what we need and the staff managing the e-blasts are familiar and comfortable with Constant Contact. We plan on staying with Constant Contact for the foreseeable future

There is always room for improvement. I don't know how they test their systems, but they should invite not-so computer savvy people to test it. If I, as an expert have problems, they need to think like the technophobe. Since I've used Constant Contact in the past as part of my former employment, I have not viewed any of the tutorials and just jumped in to work on my client's newsletter. With that said, I found some areas easy and some a bit cumbersome

The support staff seems to have no idea of why/how files are uploaded into segmented lists. They don't seem to have ever actually used the software and it is very difficult to resolve any problems

Implementation is very easy for someone who wants to send out the “batch and blast” type newsletters. If you want to use their templates with no customizations, the product works fine. However, the more customizations you get into involving link color, etc, that’s where things can get tricky for someone who may not be familiar with coding

LinkedIn is pricey and you can only send 10 Inmails for the price not really worth it at $59.99.

Very reliable in sending email campaigns and controlling the recipients so that no contact is sent the same email more than once, even if they are on a resent list

Return on Investment

  • Implemented the email service in minutes as the SDK is very easy to implement a sample.
  • Could send out thousands of emails in minutes and was able to send out bigger attachments in the email.
  • Engaging with users helped us in winning more number of users to install our App.

  • We raise more funds through donations than we do without sending appeals and newletters through Constant Contact.
  • We're able to engage a broader range of people beyond our networks when we post job openings because people in our network forward and share the emails with people they know would be interested who are outside of our network.
  • We're also able to continue to engage our donors in ways other than asking for money so they can see the impact they have in our work.
