Atlassian Crowd

For companies that are already using other Atlassian systems, then Atlassian Crowd will fit in very well. This is especially the case if the company is not yet big enough to use LDAP for user management, Atlassian Crowd can act as a temporary solution until the company outgrows it, as it is much easier and simpler than LDAP.

WatchGuard AuthPoint

I wouldn't recommend going with this solution. [WatchGuard AuthPoint is a] terrible product, hard to deploy, lack of decent management, lack of push notification, lack of integration and just poor UI and user experience. The alternative options are way better, user friendly, powerful, features with integration, control and easier management

Pros

Atlassian Crowd

  • Integrates seamlessly with all Atlassian applications out of the box.
  • Provides Single Sign-On (SSO) capabilities for integrated applications.

WatchGuard AuthPoint

  • Multiple options for 2FA - you can have pushes sent to your phone, a constantly refreshing OTP, or a QR code scanner.
  • Security for MFA - you are able to set up additional security on the tokens that you use, either through additional security codes or biometrics so that if your phone is compromised, there is an additional layer of security for that token.
  • Easy to install - Takes less then 30 seconds to install, and is not specific to computers, so it can be rolled out across an entire organization easily.

Cons

Atlassian Crowd

  • We did not get the speed that we needed vs. hosting our own local atlassian product
  • Configuring accounts could have been easier
  • I didn't like the process for installing extensions

WatchGuard AuthPoint

  • We would like to see easier guides for integration with products more commonly found in smaller companies. Perhaps videos showing how to set up for example 2factor with Office 365, which is a common request.
  • A more advanced ability to backup and restore tokens on mobiles above and beyond what is present at the moment.
  • Ability to use push and OTP with the WatchGuard SSLVPN.

We can no longer imagine working without AuthPoint.
It is simple and with push tokens much easier than rsa and other products on the market. It is very secure and gives us good installation options.

They offer an easy to use app for iOS and Android, and also a hardware token in the event that a user is not able to use their device. This means that it’s able to be used by any user any time, no excuses.AuthPoint has obviously had security and ease of use in their business objectives since day 1.

Overall, support is good, you get quick responses from Atlassian's official support system, and documentation is decent enough for you to find what you need.

WatchGuard support has also been excellent in my experience. I have never had requests that have taken a long time to be answered or had to been sent to multiple techs to resolve the issue. Their KB articles can pretty much solve most of your questions should you need to reference them, but I know their tech support can get you a resolution if you need to leverage them as well.

Send out an email beforehand to the users to make sure they know that there will be an email and what app to get installed on their phones

Alternatives Considered

Atlassian Crowd

In most ways, I preferred Duo Security as it offered a better 2-factor authentication method, and Crowd is definitely better than just having to rely on Active Directory. I have always been of the mind to have a centralized server that sits between your active directory (azure or on premise) and the systems that you integrate it with via LDAP or similar protocols. It would surprise a lot of people to see how many organizations do not secure their active directory or LDAP connections

Although some of the applications have overlapping features, none of the other management and or security solutions that we have used or evaluated are similar enough to AuthPoint to draw any meaningful comparisons.

Return on Investment

Atlassian Crowd

  • Centralized user management without the need of an LDAP/AD service.
  • Single Sign-On across applications to reduce users having to remember multiple credentials.
Patrick Li | TrustRadius Reviewer

WatchGuard AuthPoint

  • ROI on security products is difficult to measure, but a compromised account could obviously be disastrous.
  • AuthPoint mostly gives us peace of mind.
  • The only remotely negative impact is that this does require some user training. Users must understand the danger of approving notifications they aren't certain they initiated themselves.
