Consul

Consul can provide a light-weight, lightning-fast and robust solution for the following:
  • Network mesh
  • Service DNS
  • Global key-value store (values can be complex objects as well)
  • Utility for blue-green deployments
  • Service health checking
Consul can be used in any or a combination of these scenarios. Regardless if you are a network administrator or a regular software engineer, Consul can add value to your work.

New Relic

I think New Relic's APM is a great feature if you are running Ruby on Rails because ActiveRecord can abstract away the actual performance of your endpoint logic. It very easily allows you to identify endpoints that are taking too long, endpoints that have good throughput, and how the overall functionality is affecting the end-user experience. It also has many other monitoring features that can be great for companies that manage their own infrastructure.

Pros

Consul

  • Key-Value database management.
  • Service discovery.
  • Centralized configuration database with native high availability.
Erlon Sousa Pinheiro | TrustRadius Reviewer

New Relic

  • Monitor traffic rates and server usage on real time
  • Helps engineers to dive deep into an issue and guides them to the root cause
  • Provides high-level system health status of different components (ie. Server capacity, RPM, page load time, error rate..)
  • Near real time reporting
  • Links with deployment so easy to understand if an issue has occurred after a particular release

Cons

Consul

  • The GUI: The GUI interface for Consul has gotten a lot better over the years. Since Consul is so easy to interact with via API, this isn't a showstopper, but for those that are less command line inclined it's always nice to be able to refer them to an easy to use and understand web interface
  • It's chatty: Consul is extremely chatty. Sometimes it's particularly chatty at 2am with no indication as to why and eats up quite a bit of resources. Just be sure to provision your systems that typically take a heavy load with a little extra for Consul

New Relic

  • It would be helpful if use cases for particularly a Windows installation, were provided to help determine which set of configuration files would be the one a group would want to control. I.e. potentially with a department trying to do DevOps, it's difficult to determine which team needs to have responsibility for what at times. The reason I mention this, is New Relic seems to in many ways be a tool that's useful for DevOps-related processes and staff.
  • On the main New Relic One site, sometimes a refresh option is available for new features. It would be helpful to see what the new features are in advance before trying this out. Particularly if doing a demo or a working season with another team.
  • I'm not aware of a page or specific site which describes/summarizes all of the different NR Products and their features.
  • Sometimes it's tricky to determine which product to use to accomplish a task.

I have not yet found any similar product that offers me this range of features to help us keep our online service fast and reliable. Besides this, New Relic is constantly evolving by adding new plugins to emerging technologies and platforms. Server performance measuring features are a key point as our user database grows.

Usability

Consul's API is extremely user friendly. While their web interface isn't quite as "mature", it's still pretty easily navigated for the average person. Together they make a pretty easy to pick up and use tool.

As an engineer, New Relic has been very quick and easy for me to pick up/install/use. It has been less easy for some of the less technical-minded folks in our organization and their UI still is inconsistent multiple years after refactoring their platform to be New Relic One.

I've never used paid support from HashiCorp, but I consider its support a good one, since they provide a lot of free resources for the community and there are good user groups supporting you on several sorts of issues. Also, HashiCorp is known as a company with a strong relationship with the community, that is easily noticed by the events HashiCorp promotes over the world.

There are times I feel that the initial support is lacking. And in some cases the automated responses of not hearing anything are annoying if the reason why there has been no movement is because we are still waiting to hear back from NR support. So, i think they should loose the automation as it can seem disingenuous

The documentation was clear and concise; the only issue we ran into was custom application naming. Due to HTTPD mod_fcgid and the need for the application name to be set in php.ini (not in .htaccess or the virtual host directive) ... we had issues setting this up.

Alternatives Considered

Consul

Consul was easier to configure out of the box than Serf and gave us more initial options. Its easy to use tools and support were by far superior to Serf in many ways. Support alone was one of those areas that Serf could take an example from Consul to keep its customers happy.

New Relic

We selected New Relic since it was very dynamic and versatile to use. It works well in all aspects of monitoring, and observability and would allow having a focus on collaboration with different repeatable processes. Also, New Relic has a good focus on working well with CLI, UI, and API types of work.

Return on Investment

Consul

  • It contains a native web UI, which in contrast to its counterparts, is handy, very intuitive and - most importantly - very informative. It leaves no room for doubt about your services "forest" health. So, for that purpose, the learning curve was almost down to non-existent. Our team managed to work seamlessly with Consul being our services API
  • Our management staff had a difficult time understanding what Consul was really all about. For technical staff it is pretty simple to understand the huge value such a tool can pose to our suite of solutions, but once our management staff took the grasp of its valuable handy set of tools, we didn't take long to start using it and keeping track of our Swarm overall health, with was a constant concern for the entire company before.
  • For load balancing purposes, we were relying pretty much on guesses before we decided to use Consul. One would check a certain node overall health and decide if we would need to spring a new instance at AWS or Digital Ocean.

New Relic

  • Gives us great visibility into what our services are doing at all times.
  • Alerts us quickly when there is a problem so we can address it with alacrity.
  • Gives us extremely customizable options in regards to how we want to track, store, and materialize our data.
