Hotjar

Hotjar is well suite for organizations that want to get a good glimpse into user behavior on their websites. The tool is easily installed through Google Tag Manager, and then users simply select which pages or paths they want the tool to analyze. After a few days, users can start seeing patterns develop, helping them understand what areas of the user journey flow they need to test out and improve. Hotjar is primarily for web-based experiences, not for mobile applications and other non-web digital applications.

Qualaroo

It worked well for us in these scenarios:
  • Collecting and scheduling targeted customers for user testing or product feedback interviews.
  • Asking targeted questions about what specific customers want or need help with achieving, to spark ideas and see if our expectations match what customers tell us.
  • Providing step-by-step guidance to explore hypotheses about what kind of assistance will best help new customers. (When these are successful, they are formally built into the customer experience.)
  • Gathering data to share between groups to help address differences in expectation or opinion.

Pros

Hotjar

  • Heat mapping is great on Hotjar. It is a good place to start when you are looking at the UX & CRO on your website. You can see the % of people clicking on elements on a page, how far they scroll, and mouse movements.
  • Hotjar is great for session recordings. These record the mouse movements, clicks, pages and scrolls of a user in video format. You can watch these to investigate what works well on a site and identify potential roadblocks and bugs.
  • Hotjar is great as it ensures that users details are anonymous; for instance, if you are watching a session recording, you cannot see what a user types in a form field, as Hotjar blanks this out.
  • Hotjar has a poll function, so you can have polls on your website.

Qualaroo

  • Qualaroo does a great job of being able to capture additional information about a respondent, like their UTM data
  • Qualaroo does a great job at providing exportable, raw data for deeper analysis
  • Qualaroo does a great job at providing emails to give quick snapshots at how your survey "nudge" is performing
  • Qualaroo has great support and lots of documentation online to help
  • Qualaroo has easily digestible dashboards to get quick insights
  • Qualaroo makes it easy to duplicate and rerun surveys "nudges"

Cons

Hotjar

  • Customization of in-page user surveys - Although it is a great tool to be able to publish and update user surveys that appear on our web page, the customization options (mostly UI) are somewhat limited, making the survey either stick out like a sore thumb, or look like an advertisement or error on our site. It would be great to get a little bit more control over how the survey appears on our site.
  • Honestly, I have not run into any other major examples I can detail where HotJar has not been able to do what I have needed it to do!

Qualaroo

  • The way regular expression targeting works can be quirky, depending on how your site works. A "nudge" that is sometimes supposed to display only on certain pages will sometimes carry over to a page where it should not display.
  • The interface for editing and sequencing steps within a "nudge" becomes cumbersome once there are more than just 3-4 questions/screens bundled into the "nudge" (think 3-4 single-question pages of a typical web survey). You can use branch logic to make a very sophisticated question sequence and you can preview/test thoroughly, but it's a challenging UI for advanced use cases.
  • The "exit survey" functionality does not work well on landing pages because the "exit" nudge displays when a user's mouse is in the tabs or navigation area of the browser. That's often where a user's mouse is located on page load for a landing page (especially direct navigation), so the "nudge" displays too quickly. There's no ability to set a delay before the exit "nudge" can be triggered.
  • Qualaroo's NPS question type is too constraining (no control over labels) and the presentation looks dated compared to other micro-survey tools that I've seen since we signed up for Qualaroo.

Even though the heat maps and user recordings were useful, our website was significantly slowed down after we installed Hotjar, so much so, that it took over a minute for our blog to load. The data that we gathered was not worth the length that it took our website to load.

The micro-survey landscape is evolving very quickly and it seems like there is a new entrant almost every month. I'm generally happy with Qualaroo (we got what we expected) and I like the folks on the Qualaroo team (support is fast and friendly and rarely needed), but there haven't been real improvements to the platform in the last eight months. We will be re-assessing Qualaroo's features and price versus other competitors when our current contract is up.

So easy and simple to use! Straightforward anyone in the team is able to easily go in and set up anything in Hotjar. The UI is really simple. Whenever you give feedback to Hotjar they continously take on board the feedback and improve the tool.

We know the value of consumer feedback and believe that users actually want to be a part of the process. With Qualaroo, we have learnt that people like answering certain types of questions, especially if you ask them something about themselves — like what they want most and their motivations behind purchases — they can’t resist typing a response.

Our developers complain that Qualaroo is just one of several similar site add-ons that slow down our site performance. I'm skeptical that Qualaroo has any measurable impact on our page load times, but don't have any hard evidence either way. The Qualaroo admin interface and reporting mechanisms are all quick and reliable.

Hotjar 9.5

Hotjar is a SaaS-based company, and as such has a good support service. Users can quickly submit support tickets through Hotjar's online portal. Enterprise customers get access to additional support members and have SLAs to support their larger, more complex needs. Overall, Hotjar is extremely reliable and I've never had to reach out to customer support.

Have your technical team set up the "Identify" feature right out of the gate - this is a "fire and forget" feature. Once it's set up, your data is much more valuable. Also, if there are very specific kinds of page targeting you might imagine doing, have a technical person set up and test at least 2-3 examples of using Qualaroo's regular expression features to achieve this targeting. With a couple good examples in place to work from, it becomes much easier to create your own regular expressions for custom targeting.

Alternatives Considered

Hotjar

To be honest, we have only tried Hotjar session recording. I know there are some alternatives but we haven't tried any of them. I think there are none as complete as Hotjar for what you pay (some do heatmaps, other video recording, other polls). And the thing is that all of that is done pretty decent on Hotjar, so I'm not looking for any alternative right now.

Qualaroo

Qualaroo makes it very easy to launch a quick survey based on templates or custom questions with an intuitive user interface. It is also very flexible and can be easily integrated with AB testing thanks to the advanced options. Reports are getting better but analytics wise it's still not up to the refinement level of SurveyMonkey but it does beat the latter in terms of UI experience. When compared to SurveyGizmo, the flexibility on surveys is what stands out and how easy it is to create different survey flows.

Qualaroo's simplicity has its down sides when it comes to scaling. Managing multiple nudges across multiple domains, at least in the Pro edition, is challenging. The active nudges all appear as a single list on the admin home page, automatically grouped by domains. Archived nudges are on a separate tab. It would be helpful to have a folder system to organize nudges. Also, once you have multiple active nudges that are targeted to different sections of your site using regular expressions, it's difficult to keep track of what is appearing where. It's also difficult, if not impossible, to figure out where you may have competing nudges. And there's no ability to assign reporting or configuration access to other members of your team. The Pro edition has a single login, which must be shared if you have multiple staff who want to use Qualaroo.

Return on Investment

Hotjar

  • User Testing Alternative - Instead of hiring UX testers, we can leverage our actual customers to determine how they use our website. This has helped frame website redesign discussions on several occasions.
  • Landing Page Design - We've designed our landing pages based on user feedback from heatmaps we've gathered from Hotjar. Understanding where to place CTAs and other pieces based on user interaction has helped us streamline our landing page design.
  • Device Usage - Part of the data provided by Hotjar includes which device a user is visiting from. This helps us understand how mobile users work differently than desktop users.

Qualaroo

  • Compared with other online surveys, Qualaroo nudge is pretty easy to spot, and the response rate is extraordinary.
  • Our company mainly uses Qualaroo to recognize the needs of customers on particular web pages and how they can be taken care of.
  • We can plan our sales strategy to generate additional leads.
