LogicMonitor
I would not recommend it to smaller businesses or MSPs that deal with small accounts. The cost to benefit ratio is not great for those. It's usually a good fit for larger organizations that can benefit from all the features LogicMonitor offers where the price point might be acceptable.

AppOptics is good for small to medium-sized organizations with less than 150 servers or less than 40 services to monitor. It performs well for this use case where people need to get an overview of application performance, and 95%ile data is okay. Somewhere every data point and every record is critical; it should be avoided.

Pros
LogicMonitor
  • I think the best feature is the SaaS itself. The availablity at a webpage makes things really up to speed on the ever expanding cloud platforms taking over.
  • It also doesn't boggle up the space in your email boxes sending consistent messages that aren't as critical as they should be. It simply expresses just the facts.
  • Finally the ability to oversee all operations over a single customizable window pane makes it extremely intuitive and convenient.

  • Request tracing with code profiling.
  • Automated alerting on latency and response codes for each API.
  • Low resource overhead while collecting data from our application servers.
  • Highly performant dashboard that enables us to make progress rapidly.
  • Very resilient. We have not seen a downtime in their service in the entire year that we have used them.
  • Identify database and cache requests that are taking longer than expected

Cons
LogicMonitor
  • Integration capabilities with PSA/Ticketing Tools lack customization for multiple calls/actions per alert function
  • Netflow/traffic analytics could show endpoints vs. IPs for all the popular ones, ex: Facebook, youtube, Netflix, etc.
  • GUI could be beautified...think Apple OS and easy buttons. Some of the navigation is cumbersome
  • Reports function ... cumbersome, drag and drop would be lovely since properties to not auto-populate

  • The only thing that I would add is the possibility to display every single query our servers receive to eventually analyze them and query through them. We could also generate nice visualizations from that. Right now I believe we can only see averages.

This product has met virtually all of our needs. It was easy to implement and has been simple to support. Customization has been intuitive with many options available. They keep adding features and expanding available options. The future of LogicMonitor looks even better than it is today which is very promising. The management and support teams at LogicMonitor are always helpful

Usability
LogicMonitor
Set up is super easy. Just stand up a small Linux or Windows server to act as a collector. There are no agents to install on monitored devices and all you need is SNMP or WMI access. When creating dashboards, all you have to do is find the widget on the device you want to show up and choose the menu option to add it.

As far a usability is concerned for AppOptics, it is just as matter of few minutes away even if you start from scratch, as all you need to do is register on the site and you will get the URL and password. And after this all you have to do is follow the instruction, as per the configuration wizard (tool tip) within the console for various technology such as SQL, IIS, .NET

Support Rating
LogicMonitor
The sales team support we received was top notch. They worked hand in hand to make sure the product met all expectations. So far we have not really had to work with support that much; we have worked with setup team after purchase to deploy product fully. No issues so far and we are four weeks in.

Solarwinds AppOptics is rated as 9 out of 10 and the reason is there are still few areas where AppOptics needs to improve such as Service Now Integration, GCP Cloud Support, Better Dashboard visualization for application transactions flow. Other than these feature everything is there in AppOptics and that's a reason given 9 points out of 10.

Implementation Rating
LogicMonitor
The Implementation team kept us on track even when we didn't have time. They made up for our lack of focus at times and boiled everything down to simple tasks which enabled a quick deployment and an easy transition to regularly using the tool. They also kept us in a post-implementation for a while after which ensured we have multiple support options after go-live

Auvik did not provide historical data and could not monitor as many device types as LM. We found the Auvik collector to be more "buggy" and have had less issues with LM. We do feel that Auvik had a better network topology map and would clearly show device relationship. That is really the only advantage that Auvik has over LM.

What we found positive in AppOptics from others is:
  • Easy to install and manage.
  • Various stack support.
  • Point to point deep-dive metrics and correlation.
  • Metrics like DB connection, query analysis, latency in API calls, and other connections, response codes for various APIs, etc are the key ones in our case, which AppOptics provides efficiently.
  • Alerts can be sent on different channels.

LogicMonitor
LogicMonitor isn't going to be the cheapest solution out there but I do think it is the best. Also, the support is amazing where as if you were to use some free opensource tool have fun waiting for the developer to get off work to support his side project. Worth every penny.

Haven't really used it but our initial onboarding PS was disappointing. Felt like we were being told what we needed to cover as opposed to what we wanted to cover. In addition, we were pushed into using the PS in tight time frames and we were not ready to do so.

Return on Investment
LogicMonitor
  • We are currently tracking more things that, in another way, were not possible to identify and correct.
  • We work more efficiently because we first resolve the critical incidents and then continue with the less relevant ones.
  • Some alerts are quite difficult to resolve and the documentation sometimes did not guide to resolve the problems.
