Documentum is best used in medium to large institutions that can afford it, have alternate solutions for web publishing, and who have either in-house developers or can hire good Documentum developers (not the ones who know Java but do not understand ECM). It is, in my opinion, the best heavy duty ECM solution out there, assuming OT is not gutting it as we speak. That is my only hesitation to not giving it a 10, OpenText is an unknown quantity in this and I worry that they will only support Documentum until they have figured out how to fill the gap between Documentum and OT and then offer a migration path to OT with a Documentum sunsetting as an incentive.

Pinpoint is great if you have a lot of documents that need to be organized in a specific way. It works really well for our organization which has to go through an annual audit. Anything the auditors might need can be easily found and emailed to them with only a few clicks of the mouse rather than digging through file cabinets and storage boxes

For creating and maintaining a component library, it is a fantastic tool that creates an interface between Developers, UX Engineers and Designers. It is easy to get both general information about a component, but also incredibly detailed information when looking at the component on a pixel-level, where information on paddings, margins, colors, fonts etc. can be easily accessed.

Cons
OpenText
  • WDK framework has been the biggest drawbacks from the application speed point of view, as well as client complexity and not so natural look and feel. Yes, with the latest releases much of these features are improved.
  • EMC is very expensive to buy, own and support, where some products require many dependent Docuemntum products to be installed to work at its best.

  • I would like to see more functionality with the contact manager system
  • We still haven't been able to master the automatic filing feature
  • It is difficult to make changes to the setup after you have been using it a while, kind of stuck with the way you organize things.

  • when opening a component image (which opens a new page where the detailed information like paddings and colors are shown), the zoom can only be done by buttons, I'd prefer to be able to use my mouse scroll and for vertical / horizontal scrolling to do ctrl+scroll or ctrl+shift+scroll or something like that

Stability is a key factor as well as its flexibility. Also, any organization that deploys Documentum will have made a significant investment in terms of time and money, so not renewing its commitment can come with a significant cost. That said, the decision to deploy Documentum initially should come only after extensive evaluation, knowing that once deployed it will likely remain the platform of choice.

It does take some time to learn about all of the features and systems within Pinpoint. It is also slightly difficult to set up, however, we have invested a lot of time into making it work for our organization and we don't regret that investment at all. The Pinpoint staff has always been very helpful and accommodating to anything we need.

The support team with Pinpoint is wonderful. I have always had all of my questions answered in a very timely manner by someone who knows my system and understands our goals. I always feel listened to and our problems are taken care of. I enjoy the option to email for assistance or jump on a quick conference call to talk about an issue

I have used and still use Sketch and Zeplin too, but they serve other purposes for us. Sketch is used to design the components themselves and they are then exported to Zeroheight where they are showcased and enriched with textual information. Zeplin is used to design application pages, and again the components are exported to Zeplin from Sketch. But Zeroheight is mainly used for the development of the components themselves as well as a documentation for our design guideline in general. It is also used by us for design tokens and patterns, as well as other information on the design guideline, so if someone wants to understand the "why" of a design decision, the explanation can be usually found in Zeroheight too.

  • increased quality, as less misunderstandings or communication problems occur
  • increased speed of development, as it is a single source of truth for us. The developer can rely on the information in Zeroheight being correct so that he doesn't have to iterate his code again and again.
