Trinet allows small business to participate in the health care and HR marketplace like big ones. What do I mean by this? If you are a small employer and try to run a business you will find that there are advantages to to joining a PPO like Trinet. Being a member makes you in affect an employee. This gives you leverage in buying your healthcare which in today's market can be very important. If you want to attract good employees you will need to offer good low cost benefits. The healthcare we buy as being a member of Trinet is much better and much less expensive than what we would get on the open market. We also do not have to have an HR department as Trinet provides HR for us along with its other benefits.
Pros
Access to low cost insurance
HR provision
Customer service is exelent
Help set up and manage your 401-K
Cons
They do ask for a large deposit for payroll, which is difficult for a small company
Likelihood to Recommend
if you are a small company or medium size company Trinet is a great choice. If you become part of their group you will be provided with access to business functions of a much larger company. You will not need to hire HR or payroll company. Their buying power with insurance is a real plus.
HR Passport is being used by our whole organization. Each user manages their preferences and settings on their own and self-enrolls in benefits. At the admin level, it allows us to easily manage new users, staffing changes, and payroll.
HR Hire is currently being used by our hiring team managers and executive level staff to source and screen the best talent for each position. Using Hire allows our staff to access applicant data and information that was previously being withheld or bottlenecked by our one-person HR team simply due to capacity to and infrastructure. Using Hire has resulted in shorter hiring timelines for the best talent. I don't know how we hired without it.
HR Time & Attendance is being used by our whole organization to capture employee timesheets. Users can view and manage their earned time-off. Admins are using timesheets and labor distributions to bill our state, federal, and private grant funders and for accurate reporting.
Perform is still in the early stages of development for us, but we will be rolling it out to the entire organization to aid in more effective performance management.
Pros
TriNet provides customer service support to employees, often making warm referrals to carrier's member service teams, minimizing the burden on our one-person HR team which then allows me to focus on more strategic initiatives.
Payroll is incredibly easy and intuitive. Changes made in HR Passport feed into payroll seamlessly.
My day-to-day account representative, Megan Hettinger, is our right-hand when it comes to HRIS and payroll questions and challenges. She makes our lives easier and we're grateful for her.
Cons
Our HR consultant, Tara Harris, is incredibly difficult to reach and is unreliable as an HR business partner to our organization. We've begun working with a consultant for the support we had come to expect from TriNet services. Perhaps the challenge is that she's responsible for supporting too many clients? She's a great person and just may be spread too thin.
TriNet cloud services need development and refinement. More specifically, Time & Attendance could benefit from more development. We have to apply many workarounds to make the system work for us. We largely use it for grant billing for contracts and the fact that it's primarily a punching timesheet system means that when needing to change allocated hours or update time-off, we run into challenges that we didn't in Clicktime.
TriNet cloud services need development and refinement. More specifically, Hire. In terms of communicating with applicants, people are just not receiving or reading the communications beacuse it's consistenlty ending up in spam due to the series of numbers and letter in the email addresses. There's also nowhere to track interview responses (i.e. a phone interview) in the system and no way to post unpaid volunteer positions. Also, if applicants were able to create a log-in and update their information after a while, Hire would be a more robust system.

For benefits-related questions or changes to employee elections and preference, with the exeption of 403b contributions, I always recommend staff first contact TriNet and 9 out of 10 times employee services is able to answer their question.
In regards to the EAP, while it is helpful to offer a place for employees to call to discuss challenges and gain resources for support, due to the nature of our work (sexual assault response and prevention) EAP isn't seen as a resouce that could cater to the high and frequent level to vicarious trauma and self-care resources our staff needs.
We each use Trinet for our own purposes unique to our needs in addition to it providing our payroll, government reporting and HR services, as well as for some group medical coverage as well.
Pros
They are consistently reliable.
They have proven to be nearly instantly available for any query or need.
They are proactive in keeping us informed. There is no sense of becoming a client and after the initial setup period you never hear from them again.
Cons
Well, their site map is slightly confusing and could stand improvement. Having said that, when I have then called them while having difficulty they nearly always immediately answer and step me through the system to solve the problem.
In all honesty over the three years that we've been a very satisfied client compared to their predecessor competitors there is nothing more that I can think of.

For a small business like ours it is perfect. We feel we have the full power of HR that only the largest companies can afford. It is one HUGE less thing that we have to worry about.
TriNet is being used by our whole US organization to manage payroll, benefits, vacation time, and compliance. We have a small US presence, with currently only 4 US employees. We're a startup and our time is extremely valuable, TriNet let's us focus on running the business and minimizes our work related to payroll, etc. Especially important is that it handles compliance, each of our employees works from a different state and we have neither the time nor resources to manage the various nuances to state compliance.
Pros
TriNet takes care of everything related to benefits
TriNet's customer services team is prompt and courteous
TriNet handles all federal and state compliance issues and notifies us when there is something to address beyond their capabilities.
Cons
The HRPassport website is terrible, it's confusing, hard to use, and poorly designed.
Costs feel opaque and it's unclear if TriNet is competitive on cost, if another provider had the same features for a lower price we would switch to them.
The website is really really bad, it needs to be redesigned to compete with modern websites.
Likelihood to Recommend
When customer services and quickly getting a solution up and running are essential use TriNet, it took us maybe a day to go from nothing to a full HR suite, that was great. A lot of new competitors have entered the market, so it is hard to say if the previous holds relative to current competitors.

TriNet handles our HR/payroll needs for all our employees which eliminate the need to have a dedicated HR person on staff. We ask our employees to us TriNet as their HR resource and their HR portal. We also utilizing the expense report module and timesheet module to manage employee project expenses and project hours. Since TriNet centralizes a lot of employee related information, it makes it easier for managers to resolve issues.
Pros
TriNet does an amazing job centralizing employee related questions.
TriNet support is extremely quick to respond and help resolve issues.
TriNet makes it extremely easy for employees to quickly update and manage their own HR information.
Cons
The TriNet Expense functionality is lacking. As a manager, it would great if I had the ability to generate summary totals by project and/or employee. Instead, I'm downloading the expense details and creating pivot tables in Excel. This seems like a basic feature that should be easy to reimplement from a development perspective.
Our initial Client Associates were amazing, but our current one is not. After the first year, we experienced a high turnover rate for who was handling our account.

I highly recommend TriNet to small businesses that are growing and changing. TriNet makes it easy for small businesses to employee people from out of state. Also, TriNet makes it very easy to scale up or scale down HR needs as necessary and provide essential tools to help the business operate, particularly in the professional service industry.

TriNet is being used as our payroll processor and for HR support across the entire organization. We are a small startup so we leverage TriNet's expertise to help us in payroll and HR.
Pros
Very responsive support staff
Easy to navigate web site
Informative
Cons
Improved training
Likelihood to Recommend
TriNet is well suited for small companies like ours who do not have the support staff of a larger organization to process payroll and deal with many HR related issues.
We have 3 offices across the United States and Trinet seamlessly helps me manage employees in California and Louisiana without having to spend hours on the phone with them explaining how to do certain HR tasks.
Pros
Provides great benefits
Excellent customer service and response time
Great technology, that allows everything to be accessed from one place
Cons
Customer service hours, If there was anyway to have someone available to us 24/7
Better 401K options
Likelihood to Recommend
We are still a small company but we were even smaller when we started with Trinet. They were able to take 14 employees at the time and provide us with benefits equal to any large company. This is extremely helpful in recruitment of new employees.

TriNet is used for payroll processing and employment tax filings, human resources and benefits. It allows us to concentrate on our business instead of HR and payroll reporting. TriNet negotiates Fortune 500 benefit packages that we would not be able to obtain affordably as a smaller business.
Pros
TriNet representatives are responsive, professional and courteous.
Payroll processing is straight-forward and easy to use, and reports are easy to read.
HR questions are fielded by professionals knowledgeable about HR regulations.
Cons
Custom reports could be easier to create.

TriNet takes care of payroll, benefits and regulatory employment reporting so we can focus on our business. As a small multistate employer, TriNet takes care of multistate reporting and workers compensation.
TriNet is used by our USA operation to manage payroll and benefits. We are a small team, and I didn't want to hire a Human Resource person to manage same, so after careful consideration of many options, TriNet clearly stood apart from the competitive crowd!
Pros
First, accessibility is a hot-button for me. If/when we need support, I want to know that a resource is always available and responsive, and TriNet nails it!
Second, options is another hot-button for me. I want the team, myself included, to have options when it comes to benefit choices. We are a small company, and a small team. I don't want the team to be concerned about benefit choices, which can reduce morale. TriNet's wide breadth of benefit choices is a clear differentiator for me.
Finally, thirdly, ease-of-use is another strong consideration when choosing our HR partner provider. TriNet makes it super easy to manage payroll, and manage benefits, without a lot of "touch-points". The tools on their website are intuitive, and if I have a question, I know I'll talk to someone quickly with an answer.
Cons
There is room for improvement with regards to TriNet's open enrollment process. We ran into a situation where an employee made a benefit selection mistake. TriNet does a great job of constant reminders about open enrollment status, and next steps, but lacking was a review process of everyone's benefit selections prior to the firm deadline. I strongly suggest a benefit selection summary be shared with the group administrators well before the open enrollment deadline in order to avoid costly mistakes. The appeal process worked as it should, despite my disappointment in the result of same.
I would like to see user input with regards to the subject of reporting. If we could run our own queries via pull-down menus, that would be incredibly useful. Why? Because there are times when what I need is unavailable as a "canned report" from the list of choices, and I'd rather not have to extract what I need when I would prefer to build a query of my own.

We decided to partner with TriNet because we are a small company, and a small team, and TriNet never made us feel "small", unlike many of their competitors. If you, like us, are similar in size, then I would strongly encourage you to open a discussion with TriNet about how they can help you. But don't be fooled! I wouldn't hesitate to remain partnered with TriNet if my company and team scale in size. I have every confidence TriNet wouldn't skip a beat if we grew considerably over time, which is clearly our long-term goal! If, however, you already have a HR resource(s) on staff, then I'm not sure TriNet is for you. I view TriNet as a HR resource outsource business model. I wouldn't want to try a hybrid model. For me it's an either/or choice, and I choose TriNet!
We use Trinet and Trinet's time clock for three of our entities. We use Trinet as our HR department. They assist us in handling our HR issues, hiring and terminations. They cover our health insurance and workmans comp. If employees have questions or issues, we direct them to trinet and Trinet handles the employees' concerns.
Pros
Health insurance coverage - software gives employee a lot of choices in a format that allows them to compare their options.
Termination of employees - Trinet will assist in counseling employees and makes sure we are compliant.
Makes HR completely cloud based.
Cons
Time clock needs better integration.
Likelihood to Recommend
It is well suited for small companies. Because of health care costs however, you have to make sure other costs of doing business with Trinet does not outweigh the health insurance cost savings.
