Overall Satisfaction with BigCommerce

We used BigCommerce to run several different online businesses. It was being used by the entire company, from sales and marketing on the front end to fulfillment, customer retention, and customer management on the backend. BigCommerce syncs up fairly well with several other 3rd party applications that allowed us to do other things like accounting. It worked pretty well across the board and provided decent value for what we were getting out of it.
  • Simple backend design and site management tools. Pretty user friendly and simple to learn.
  • Tons of 3rd party applications in the app store, which makes it easy to find solutions to problems you might have.
  • Decent value, based on what you get for the price.
  • Price - Little overvalued when compared to some other platforms that we have found and use.
  • Speed and Consistency of Websites - We did have some load time issues and problems from time to time, so having a more solid foundation would have been good.
  • Customer Support - We seemed to get a new account manager every month or two, so having more consistency there would have been nice.
  • Overall, we were very pleased when we first switched over to BigCommerce. We found that we got great value compared to the previous platforms that we had used (Magento, OFBiz, AmeriCommerce). ROI was great.
  • As we began to scale and build our business, the pricing structure changed on us and it was going to 3X our monthly cost. It was then that we started to explore other options and found ShopifyPlus, which is where we currently host all of our websites.
  • If the price didn't jump on us, we probably never would have changed because the BigCommerce platform is really solid.
From the pricing model they tried to get us on, as we scaled up the monthly price we needed to pay went to levels that were more than we were comfortable with, especially since we would have been able to just host and run our own site with inhouse developer for cheaper than they were asking for. Granted, we had 5 websites on the platform, both retail and wholesale, but the cost became too prohibitive when comparing it to other options available to us.
APIs were great and we used them for several integrations. The most effective to us was tying it to our 3PL warehouse that did all of our shipping for us. BigCommerce tied in beautifully and worked great to push order, shipping, tracking numbers, and delivery notifications back and forth seamlessly. We almost never had any issues with the communication between the 2 platforms and are glad that it worked so well. We also used the API to create a long term drip system with InfusionSoft. There were some headaches initially setting things in motion, but once we worked out the kinks it was great and became a very good tool for us.
BigCommerce is a great and powerful platform that has lots of upside. We still have a couple basic sites running on BigCommerce, mainly for backing up customer and order data. At this time, we have moved most of our businesses over to Shopify Plus b/c we feel that we get much more value out of it and are able to scale and grow our businesses at a fixed cost instead of the sliding scale that we were having to pay with BigCommerce. BigCommerce has some great features and options though, and I think that we would have kept everything on that platform if they didn't change our contract and pricing. But it is certainly better than options like Magento, OFBiz, WordPress, and AmeriCommerce, to name a few of the other platforms that we tried in the past. It is much more economical and effective than those platforms.
Well suited for smaller, start up companies on the web. As you start to scale and need more enterprise level features, I think that you can find them in other places. But this works well for people that don't have a developer background and don't know HTML/CSS. They can design and run a great website without knowing how to code. It works well to integrate into fulfillment software and natively has some tools that will make it easy to run a web-based business.
