Overall Satisfaction with Dropbox

The core use case for me was utilizing Dropbox as a secure and convenient repository for research working files, datasets, code, paper drafts, collaboration with colleagues, etc. It solves several pain points of disorganization, limited access, version control, and manual backups. The scope covered daily document storage and collaboration needed for research projects. More advanced use cases did include programmatic access and integrating with other research software tools, but that was just experimental.

Pros

  • Sharing of specific folders
  • Multi-factor authentication
  • Linux support

Cons

  • The constant nudge to upgrade to the next tier
  • In my opinion, web interface is dated and dry
  • I believe billing management is problematic
  • Time Savings - Syncing files across devices and sharing them with colleagues via Dropbox has saved me substantial time compared to emailing files back and forth or working from a single computer. I estimate I've gained back about 5 hours per week.
  • Improved Collaboration - Jointly working on papers and projects with other researchers is much easier with shared Dropbox folders. I'd estimate a 15% improvement in efficiency on collaborative projects.
  • Cost Savings - No need to purchase external hard drives for manual backups and file transfers. Dropbox provides needed cloud storage and automation for free.
Google Drive has competitive storage pricing and excellent integration with other Google services. But the collaboration features are not as intuitive as Dropbox's shared folders.

OneDrive is convenient for existing Microsoft/Office users. But platform support beyond Windows is more limited compared to Dropbox.

The user-friendly interface and reliability of Dropbox make it my top choice for keeping files safely accessible across all my devices, sharing files flawlessly with colleagues, and facilitating better research collaboration. The version history and cloud backup provide peace of mind against data loss. While other platforms have benefits, the overall package of Dropbox is ideal for my needs as a research engineer at a university.

Yes

Did implementation of Dropbox go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Dropbox again?

Yes

Collaborating with labmates on a research paper - Using Dropbox to share and jointly edit the paper draft, data files, code, and literature review in real time was great. The version history allows tracking changes and rolling back if needed. No need to manually sync multiple copies or email drafts back and forth. Storing large datasets for analysis - The storage limits and API restrictions of Dropbox make it less ideal for terabyte-scale data that needs to be computationally accessed. In my opinion, it is certainly not a solution for HPC environment or database built for large-scale scientific data. Dropbox is more appropriate for derived analysis results.
