Overall Satisfaction with New Relic

New Relic gives us the monitoring and instrumentation capabilities to support a high transaction eCommerce platform and back-office functions. It gives us performance analysis on every new deployment and quickly provides us metrics and diagnostic logs to facilitate our investigation into any issues that arise. Its alerting means we have eyes on the system even out of hours and can help us protect revenues.

  • Its allowed resources, that would otherwise be tied up monitoring, to be engaged in serving the business elsewhere.
With the prevalence of microservices and containerization, having that full-stack and distributed view on systems has given confidence to the business to adopt these paradigm shifts in the IT space. To know that with an across-the-board post deployment view of the estate things hitherto deemed risky can be attempted or tried with feedback to the risk in real-time and the ability to react to issues or prove the success accordingly.
New Relic has helped reduce migration risk by being able to capture and compare before and after behaviors and performance to migrated systems. Historical data provided over time with New Relic allows benchmarking for migration and allows migration risks to be addressed before go-live. New Relic reduces revenue risk and downtime, real-time data post releases combined with historical benchmarking allows for issue identification before it becomes revenue limiting.
We have benefitted from performance monitoring and alerting in our DevOps space, it is critical to perform load testing analysis and historical performance trends can be used as a yardstick to the impact of new changes. This gives confidence pre-release and knowing it can provide real-time stats in post-release to show the impact naturally gives the confidence to increase release cycles.
We use other products within the organization but New Relic gives a broader coverage of the full stack. While all have their niche advantages over each other. New Relic has the broadest capability set that is more accessible, not only to engineers but to other non-technical teams and it is with that that it has a true competitive advantage.

New Relic is well suited for eyes on monitoring of live systems, in our case a high transaction eCommerce platform giving across the board metrics on throughput, errors, infrastructure performance, and distributed system performance. Its log ingestion and presentation is not as good as saying Splunk is, particularly for querying but could have more potential if it could be tied to its error analytics and alerting, that would be game-changing.
