Overall Satisfaction with QuickBooks Desktop Pro

We really just use it for basic accounting - including customer and vendor tracking. While we do minimal billing thru QuickBooks Desktop Pro, we do ALL of customer receipts thru it, depositing to both our business checking and our Paypal account. Further, we also handle all of our accounts payable in QuickBooks Desktop Pro. When bills are logged as soon as they're received, it makes it easy to keep track of them and get them paid on time.

Pros

  • Accounts payable
  • Customer records
  • Vendor records

Cons

  • Accounts receivable
  • Payroll
  • Positive - easy AP tracking for on-time bill payment
  • Positive - easy payment receipts
  • Negative - payroll service is TOO expensive
As a relatively novice user, I generally don't have any problem finding my way around. My two biggest criticisms would be that 1) if there IS a place (besides running a report) where I can see all of my open invoices, I haven't found it yet; and 2) subscribing to QuickBooks payroll service is just too pricey for small businesses with only a few employees. It used to be affordable - now it's more than double what it used to be. We resorted to manually calculating payroll and entering it by hand.
Like it or not, QuickBooks Desktop Pro has kind of been the go-to software for ballpark business accounting for a lot of years now. At the end of the day, it's a good product - and it's all we've used for probably 25 years now.

Do you think QuickBooks Desktop Pro delivers good value for the price?

Not sure

Are you happy with QuickBooks Desktop Pro's feature set?

Yes

Did QuickBooks Desktop Pro live up to sales and marketing promises?

I wasn't involved with the selection/purchase process

Did implementation of QuickBooks Desktop Pro go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy QuickBooks Desktop Pro again?

Yes

For us, accounts payable is probably the most used component for us, followed closely by payment receipts. Most of our billing is a little too specific to be handled efficiently by QuickBooks Desktop Pro, so we bill out of a separate custom application - but we receive all of those payments through QuickBooks Desktop Pro - and that works great.

Using QuickBooks Desktop Pro

2 - They represent just general small business office management. We keep track of payables and receivables, as well as vendors and customers. We do some billing, we manually enter payroll info... pretty basic stuff.
The two people in our office that use QuickBooks Desktop Pro are my secretary and myself. Inasmuch as I really don't have a "number" of people that I have to support. When questions come up, we look up answers online.
  • Accounts receivable
  • Accounts payable
  • Customer tracking
  • Vendor tracking
  • Payroll processing
  • Nothing unexpected
  • nothing comes to mind
I'd love to keep using it, and do intend to - though we've not been pleased with price increases over the past several years. In fact, we used to subscribe to the payroll service, but QuickBooks priced themselves out of reach for us, so we discontinued that. Currently, pricing would be the primary reason for NOT renewing, if we didn't.

Evaluating QuickBooks Desktop Pro and Competitors

Yes - It replaced Libra Accounting Systems out of Utah. Libra was a DOS product (which was current at the time), and was a terrific accounting suite. However, this was about the time that Windows was just beginning to start seeing use in the business world. While Libra had intentions of migrating to Windows, a Windows program never materialized. Quickbooks was starting to see acceptance, so we just ended up there and have stayed there since.

This has been so long ago, literally the only major conditions were that it covered what we needed - payables, receivables, payroll, billing, and inventory (at the time) - plus, it needed to be Windows based. QuickBooks Desktop Pro checked all of these boxes for us. The bonus at the time was that all of these modules were integrated into a single app, where our prior DOS apps were individual modules (separate apps) for each area.
We really wouldn't change what we did. Again, this has been so many years ago, there simply weren't many options. There were lots of DOS based accounting programs, but the world was moving to Windows, and QuickBooks was where landed.
