Overall Satisfaction with Slack

I'm working in a big company. over 1000 employees. We work remotely, we have the communication problem between all the employees. So the company chose Slack as the main communication tool. Now Slack is the backbone of the company. Slack is our digital office. Everyone in the company is connected to Slack. Slack is a tool organized in channels in which you can be subscribed. The channels is the place where the magic comes true. I mean, is the place where people can spread their ideas, share files, start callings or video callings, or whatever. The most important is you can be online or disconnected in some moment, but the info wrote there, remains for every one. You can have deferred conversations meanwhile you can do other things to the same time. In my company, we have a lot of channels, and you can use the right one depending on the topic, circumstances or whatever. If you need to deal with some new topic you can start a new channel and communicate your ideas there. Very flexible. Another important thing are the Slack notifications notify you when something has happened. Slack allows integrate with 3rd party to be notified when something has occurred in another app as a deployment on GitHub, a new task has created on Jira and so on. Nowdays, my company relies on Slack and if Slack is not working the company stops. So it's critical.

Pros

  • Handle different conversation topic in different channels.
  • Integration with 3rd parties to be notified when something has happened in external systems.
  • Allows you deferred communication between team members.
  • The conversations always remains on Slack and you can find the info of past conversation whenever you want.
  • You can use private and public channel to communicate with each other.
  • You can use the mobile app meanwhile you are travelling and the desktop app when you are using the computer. The apps works really well.
  • You can use slack to do calls or video calls to one or several people at the same time.

Cons

  • The video calls sometimes have problems. It's like your computer was frozen. If you share your screen in a video call, and you are using intellij, sometimes intellij doesn't work. You have to change the focus between Slack and intellij to try to do your things in intellij.
  • Sometimes the notifications doesn't work properly.
  • Sometimes you can change the status of your session. For instance, to say that you are off, sometimes doesn't work properly.
  • When you are writing a post, sometimes you need to do an enter to do a break line, but Slack understands that you want to send the message. So the message is sent, and you have to edit the message to finish it properly.
  • In the previous versions, the format tools was stacked into the writing are frame. Now it appears when you writing. For me it's annoying.
  • The format tools for posting messages could be better. When you are inserting code, or a quote, it's difficult to quit these text formats. Once you have selected the format, you have to write more text after the format, and mark them to unblock the format.
  • I think Slack needs a tool to sketch your ideas like the Miro app.
  • I think Slack needs a tool as Jira to handle the task and retrospectives.
  • I think Slack needs a board to pin reminders, to see the reminders in a first glance.
  • In the pandemic context, Slack saved my company. We didn't stop working any day, we keep on working remotely. I'd say the ROI was 100% of the Slack investment. The company could achieve the goals in that circumstances.
  • Thanks to Slack people can work remotely and having a better life without spending time to back and forth to the company every day. The company can save money having small offices, paying less money for renting. So people are happier and healthy, and the company saves money too.
  • Slack gives us the possibility to communicate anywhere, so when anyone is traveling can keep on working if needed.
  • Sometimes we have a problem is our application, so our server sends a message to Slack, and Slack notifies the team members that there's a problem. So the company saves time and money because we can realize something is wrong is, and we can fix it faster.
  • The knowledge is spread in the Slack channels, so you can review past conversations and learn of the ideas behind. This is really important for the company because people can be more efficient.
Time to time, the app is changing, and sometimes instead of improving it, it's the opposite. When you are doing a video call and share your screen, other tools are frozen. When you are posting a message, the format tool was located in the top of the text area, now it is a pop up, and sometimes you can see it. When you inspect the activity section a new float window is shown, and it's hard deal with it. At the same time has the home main conversations and the activity conversations. It's weird and it's not useful. I think to remember that this was in this way in previous versions. For another things Slack works really well. You can group your channels as you like, you can customize the icons of the channels, you can open a thread in a post, which is really a cool feature and works really well, you can send giphies, pools... easily. The channels are in bold when some messages are coming you can realize that there are some new conversations. You can react in a post with an emoji, which is cool. You can save a post for later. In general the usability is good. I like it.
I think the most similar to Slack is Discord. The other ones are more chats in the old fashion way. I mean, for the messager and WhatsApp the communication is for particular people mainly, it's not planned/developed for a company. You need the contacts to start to communicate. Now WhatsApp has a business account, but it's more or less the same functionality of the normal WhatsApp. It doesn't work for a big company. With Slack you can reach to anyone who belongs to the company. You don't need to send an invitation or whatever. If the people are in Slack you can reach them. I think Discord is similar to Slack, it has communities and you have to subscribe to the communities and after that you can see the channels. So this part is the same. What is different is the design, the usability, and some features. Discord is oriented more for casual people: gamers and so on. Slack is oriented more for companies.

Do you think Slack delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with Slack's feature set?

Yes

Did Slack live up to sales and marketing promises?

I wasn't involved with the selection/purchase process

Did implementation of Slack go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Slack again?

Yes

I recommend it 100%. Once you start working with Slack you don't want to go back to another tool, like a simple email box. Using Slack the communication is fast, and you are always connected with all your team members. All the things happen there. It's not only posting in channels, you can enhance the experience using the calling and the video calling tool to meet with your colleagues. You don't need to know their phone numbers, neither their WhatsApp, just click on the calling button and the communication starts. I'd said using Slack at the beginning can be difficult to handle so huge information in all the channels, but little by little you can achieve it. You can connect with people on team, or the other teams, however you can connect with other communities different than your company, it works like Reddit, so Slack is open to connect with anybody. I can't imagine working in a company without using Slack.
