AB Tasty

I can only mention where AB Tasty has been useful as I haven't had negative experiences on the tests we have carried out. A useful scenario for us is that we use AB Tasty to test changes on pages in a test environment instead of having to test on live

Monetate

+Its A/B tests are the best I've seen. +Its insertable product carousels are good if you don't have any other source for such things. However they only display basic groups like a given category or best sellers, which leave them inferior to AI learning recommendations such as Sales Force's Einstein.+Badging is easy to use if it needs to be handled by someone non-technical. "Just paste the SKUs in this text box" is pretty easy to understand.-Its general analytics outside of comparing test groups are severely lacking, falling far behind even the basic level of Google Analytics, for example. (Though GA's A/B testing feature is garbage, so having both is a good complement.)

Pros

  • Tests are very easy to set up with the platform, or using the widget.
  • AB Tasty's team are very open to propositions of evolutions for the tool.
  • Reading and analyzing the results of the tests is quite simple and intuitive.
  • The results are also easy to share with the people in the company who might find them useful.

  • A/B Testing is #1 with a bullet. It can do virtually anything and gives robust data comparing groups, plus you can add new, custom metrics on top. Not to say improvements couldn't be made, though. In particular the way they handle multi-group tests is sub-optimal.
  • Badging is also useful, though more as a convenience than a necessity, as it'd be easy enough to create the effect without them. Their implementation is simple enough that our production team can change them on their own, without any dev support.

Cons

  • Maybe some editor functionalities could be directly accessible from the homepage, like the amount of traffic you give to a test.
  • The functionality that allows you to point the whole traffic through a variation while keeping the measure of results is not that easy to set up compared to the editor tool. It could be even more intuitive by copying the set up of the initial test.
  • Reports loading can sometimes be quite long when we have a lot of traffic (that point has been improved but is not yet perfect).

  • Some of their provided widgets aren't made with speed in mind, which critical in these increasingly mobile based days. For example, we had a recommendation carousel at the bottom of the homepage with 5 starting images (screen width allowing) that by default populated 8 pages of products--40 images total. It loaded them immediately as part of page load. It should wait until the widget scrolls into view, or the 'more' arrow is tapped.
  • Their staffing seems to be in some upheaval currently. We had one great CSM for a long time, but now in the last year we've had at least 3 different ones (I can't even remember them all), some for as little as a month.
  • Placing a widget on a page at any point other than immediately (such as only after scrolling a certain distance, or inside an opened modal) is extremely difficult currently.

It is a technology that is being used on a daily basis by the team. So it has real value rather than just "potential" value. Monetate continues to roll out new functionality, and, while not cheap, is cost effective.

Part of what I love about Monetate is how intuitive the tool is. Very very easy to use - based on the basics - Who/What/When/Where concept. Anyone can jump right in and start using the tool. And very easy to copy campaigns and tweak to continue to build experiences. We recently added Monetate on mobile and similar experience - easy to jump back and forth between platforms. Also love the analytics dashboard...easily quantifiable and easy to get tidbits that are digestible for others not as familiar with tool.

Alternatives Considered

It's a different tool - and could probably borrow some of the UI and ease of use from the other tools, but excels in providing prebuilt functionality and more detailed targeting. It also needs a lot more learning - when the other tools are pretty much pick up and go.

Monetate is more flexible than Adobe with a much better UI for testing and targeting. It is more cost effective than Certona, and gets higher average order lift than MyBuys for product recommendations.

Return on Investment

  • Increase of turnover
  • Test and deploy new functionnalities

  • We've learned that product recommendations perform better on our native site than through an algorithm - but then we have a smaller product catalog in which items are very similar in photographs.
  • We've seen positive results when using Monetate to target segments to serve different experiences.
