ActiveCampaign

ActiveCampaign is perfect for teams that want a lightweight, easy to use email software which still has the ability to deeply integrate with your codebase/business logic (through tagging via their API and automations). It strikes the balance nicely between allowing developers and marketers to collaborate --- simply instruct the developers to tag users appropriately in the business logic / code base, and then the marketers can use AC's automations initiated by a tag to come up with whatever complex follow-up they desire (all without bugging the developers again).

Sendblaster

Sendblaster is a great tool for any environment. It's particularly good in organizations that do not have a full featured CRM that manages bulk email marketing and communication. Even if an organization has a great CRM, Sendblaster is still great for those marketing or communication campaigns that go out to recipients who are not already in the CRM, custom groups, bulk sending that you want to keep separate from your other CRM(s), etc.

Pros

  • Marketing Automation
  • Click/Link Tracking
  • Email Integration with Gmail via a Chrome extension

  • Ultimate control over design of templates and messages. Sendblaster provides great templates, but you can also design your own from scratch, with total control.
  • Lots of options for sending your outgoing messages, including your organization's SMTP server, a third party's SMTP server, "direct" sending from your desktop, and many more configuration options.
  • Sendblaster is even easier than Microsoft Word for "merging" data into your outgoing messages.
  • Once you pay the affordable price for the Sendblaster software, there are no more ongoing subscription fees or volume-based per-message charges.

Cons

  • There is no media database/library. All images uploaded for use just kind of "live" with the user that uploaded them in the emails and there is no easy way to organize them and there is no way to share them amongst different users. So needless to say, images are just kind of a mess.
  • Campaigns can be organized by various methods - type, status, label and list. But there is no way to organize by campaign name, date created or date scheduled/sent which would be helpful for the person creating all the emails to keep track of what's done and needs to be done. (You can sort by 'last modified' but if you jump around a bit between emails, that doesn't help.)

  • The user interface could be more polished. It's very easy to use, but the appearance of the user interface looks a little old fashioned for a desktop software. Of course recipients don't see that interface, so that is not very consequential.

Alternatives Considered

ActiveCampaign is the only option (compared to ConstantContact and MailChimp) for creating marketing automations and drip campaigns. If you don't need automation, Constant Contact and MailChimp are a lot easier to use.

Sendblaster has all the features of these other alternatives, and its more flexible. Its a lot easier to develop custom messages/templates. There are a lot more sending configurations that are possible. There are no subscriptions fees with Sendblaster, unlike MailChimp and Constant Contact. I haven't found another solution that has all of the same features.

Return on Investment

  • We've probably [doubled] our business because of ActiveCampaign over other email/CRM providers

  • Customer service was greatly improved because of Sendblaster. We were able to design our communication exactly the way we wanted to improve communication effectiveness.
  • Sendblaster helped our brand because email recipients have been very impressed by the polished visual appearance of our outgoing messages, consistent branding and use of logo, wordmark, and other identifiers, etc.
  • We saved a lot of money with Sendblaster. Our organization can send unlimited messages, and the Sendblaster software we paid for places no limit on messages sent. So, since there are no ongoing subscription fees or volume fees after paying for the the software, we saved a lot. Other "software as a service" options would have cost a minimum of $50 per month, and potentially a lot more than that for high-volume email communication.
