Figure out if you're looking for a conferencing tool or a training tool. If the primary purpose is going to be for web meetings, then I would likely look elsewhere. There is better standalone conferencing software. If you're trying to upgrade your training platform, this is a great option. They offer an abundance of tools that make this a viable option for those who will be presenting without producers as well.

GoToWebinar

GoToWebinar is well suited for scheduled webinars with larger audiences (more than 5 attendees), but is less suited for impromptu meetings.

Pros

  • The interface is very clean, well-designed and free from distractions.
  • Recordings are of very high quality and can be stored on the server indefinitely. They can be easily accessed via a web link (and can now be password protected). Recordings can be exported in mobile-compatible format as an MP4.
  • Meeting rooms persist from one login to another, so the host and the participants can always have a familiar interface to work with.
  • It's easy to add polls and use them throughout a session.
  • Because of the large user base, there are a number of add-ins you can use to enhance your webinars.

  • Good quality of audio and video during webinars. GoToWebinar uses multiple connections at the same time, which I assume is the reason for this high bandwidth. Rarely any complaints about the quality of the connection, few dropped attendees.
  • Quality of the recordings is good, and I like the fact that the original recording is on my local hard drive.
  • I've had to call support on several occasions, and I appreciate the fact that it's available 24/7.
  • The ability to have multiple organizers and presenters is well done and easy to use.
  • Letting the attendees download handouts during the session is a nice extra touch.

Cons

  • Audio. I'm certain that, of all the people polled, that audio will be at the top of everyone's "need to improve" list. Anyone who uses Adobe Connect with international participants will tell you, audio is by far the biggest sore spot. Unless someone calls into a local GlobalMeet/PGI telephone line from a traditional landline connection, audio is spotty.
  • There should be an easier way to export recordings to a single file, such as MP4 or FLV. Having to play back the entire recording is a nuisance. At least with a single-file format, we could then host the file with a service like Brightcove.
  • Recording playback for international participants is a problem - bandwidth concerns are constantly a problem, and recordings are mostly unusable for our participants in AU. Adobe needs a multi-region streaming service, if they can't figure out how to save in a single-file format.
  • Linux users are unable to use the full capabilities of this software, which has led to internal strife and questions about the product.

  • One weakness is the customization and branding portion is somewhat limited. I'd like to be able to put a message on the registration page that differs from the automated e-mails that go out.
  • When you send out a webinar recording to someone not already registered after the webinar, the link they click on is basically a registration page, and once they register the video will display, which is fine, I just wish it could be a little more clear, it just seemed a little odd to me, I think the template could be cleaned up a bit here, perhaps the video embedded on the initial page and they register on that page for it to play, I'm not sure what the answer is here.
  • The current post webinar survey is only displayed on a users screen after the webinar. I think it would be nice to add a feature where you can send a link to people to after the fact to ask them to fill out the survey once you look at the report and see who didn't fill it out. I found a work around for this, but I think it would be a nice feature to auto generate a survey link that you can send out in personal e-mail, similar to the registration link.

Adobe Connect provides everything I need from a collaboration tool. Once you've had high speed internet or HD television or driven a luxury car, it's very difficult to go back to what you were using before. That's how I feel about Adobe Connect, it's the luxury car with all of the bells and whistles and moving to another product that doesn't have all of the features I've become accustomed to would be extremely frustrating.

Our largest issue with GoTo have been the limitations on recording and using recordings to host a webinar, and the biggest of those is the ability to record. We have had most of our webinars recorded successfully, but when it failed to save, it failed in a big way. Their customer service team was there to help, but they were unable to truly fix the problem. There are, of course, other providers, but as we are still seeing where hosted webinars fit in our marketing strategy, cost is an important factor. Since our company already uses GoToMeeting, it makes more sense for us to stay with the entire suite of products, especially while we are testing the strategy as a whole.

Usability

Adobe Connect9.0

As sophisticated a product as Adobe Connect, the ease of use is outstanding. In my experience, even a user with very little knowledge of Adobe Connect can begin using and even leading sessions with very little training to get started with the basic features. Additional training is needed to become comfortable with the number of available features, but learning curve even for those is no steeper than would normally be expected from similar software.

I give it this rating because GoToWebinar is very user-friendly and if you do find yourself looking for something or trying to figure something out, the customer service is very knowledgeable and will get you the answer if they don't readily know. They follow up, which is nice. I also liked how we could copy the actual webinar and set several practice runs with our internal team prior to the actual webinar. It allowed everyone to become very comfortable to minimize any hiccups the day of.

The ability to have most of the functionality of a full LMS at a fraction of the cost is huge. I can create manage and deploy both synchronous and asynchronous training based on the situation and all of my training is tracked through a series of easily created reports

Implementation

Adobe Connect7.9
Based on 4 answers
Prices do not seem to vary much among resellers of the Adobe Connect hosted license; the only price variation you're likely to find are among the audio providers. When implementing, you may also wish to look into expanding the amount of storage you are allowed on the server to avoid any problems later on as your library of files starts to build up

Alternatives Considered

I've worked for several conferencing companies and have supported a lot of online products. I've talked a lot about what Adobe Connect does well and not so well in this review, but the customization and flexibility you get with Adobe Connect is the main reason I find it to be the best collaboration technology out there. I can completely brand and customize my meeting room to use only the features that I need. I can turn on/off any feature with a simple mouse click. I can prepapre several different layouts to quickly change the look and function of my virtual meeting room. Adobe Connect also allows developers to create functionality that doesn't come out of the box. You can create custom .swf files that are like apps for your meeting room and they add both functionality and fun into the Adobe Connect experience. Third party developers have created custom .swf files for closed captioning, rock paper scissors, Jeopardy style trivia games, countdown timers, clocks, mp3 players and much more. Adobe Connect goes way beyond just screen sharing

I believe GoToWebinar is a best in class option, although not perfect, I think for delivering an overall solution to hosting webinars, it's the total package. I ultimately chose GoToWebinar because I was very familiar with GoToMeetings which I really liked and it just made the most sense for us. And to be honest, I didn't have time to or want to do a thorough evaluation of multiple products. GotoWebinar's customer service and sales people are top notch when ensuring you get what you need and the answers you're looking for. The tutorials are very helpful and their online resources to troubleshooting came in very handy.
