Let go of your preconceptions about what you think will win a user experience test, but keep hold of your marketing savvy.

If you have a lively dev department and are selling $5m+/year, then this may be an option for you. But then you should probably be using Magento Enterprise anyway. I am convinced that Magento allows and follows the Open Source version not to provide any meaningful support but to glean new ideas to attract Enterprise customers.

Pros

Adobe Target

  • Our consultant we had was one of the best consultants I've ever worked with.
  • Very strong analytics engine in it. Easy segmentation to make some very specific design decisions.
  • Simple multivariate campaign setup.

  • Magento 2 CE has a very robust document workflow which mirrors most mid-large ERP systems. There's a "papertrail" which mimics your business processes, and each part of the process is exposed to the API which makes for some great integration potential.
  • Magento 2 CE is also great for tracking customer history, saves a record for each and allows you to understand customer interests better.
  • Magento 2 CE is highly expandable, with a full marketplace of free and premium modules that should accomplish some pretty niche sales or service goals.

Cons

Adobe Target

  • User interface needed a lot of work, in particular with the use of MBoxes. This has supposedly been improved upon though with the latest release.
  • To build out specific segments required direct knowledge of how to write javascript, which isn't in the wheelhouse of our marketing team.
  • Creating offers required direct knowledge of html.

  • Magento 2 community is full of known and new bugs with long-pending pull requests and the community is on the hook for changes. Submit an very obvious issue to the github repo, and you will likely be met with a "this is open source and you use at your own risk." I counter this poor attitude with the fact that open source community has standards, and we do not label a "release" until those standards are met. Otherwise it's just a alpha, beta or numbered build. We don't release obviously bad software until it's fully working.
  • Magento is expensive to maintain. You will need a well-paid php developer with apache and hosting knowledge, or you will have to hire an external firm. Either option will turn your website into an additional $100k/yr cost center, so you'd better be ready to ramp up sales. Every feature update or bugfix in the past year has uncovered more bugs, which my devs fix, but at the cost of timelines and billed hours way outside of my budget and target dates.

We did not renew, mostly due to product roadmap and overall cost of the product compared to competitors.

It's the dominant force in the SMB open source market. With the continued support of eBay/PayPal, Magento will continue to evolve and should be a market leader for some time.

Customer service was friendly and very reachable. However, they weren't always knowledgeable in helping us solve our problems. Also, because of our contract we were limited in the number of support hours and help we could receive.

In-Person Training

Adobe Target

Adobe Target 8.1
Based on 3 answers
The instructor that came to train us was awesome and this training was very useful. I would recommend it for anyone who is going to be using this software. I only mark it lower because it is an added expense to an already expensive product, and a lot of the training covered the "Target" portion of the software (which again, we didn't use)

Online Training

Adobe Target

Adobe Target 6.1
Based on 3 answers
The training was very easy to understand, however it would have been more useful to my development team than me. It was also primarily over-the-phone, which is never as easy to follow as in-person. We ended up scheduling and paying for an in-person training session to supplement the online/phone training because it wasn't helpful enough.

Implementation

Implementation was very slow and we didn't know the details or timeline until it had already been activated (so we missed our first period of use for the software).

Alternatives Considered

Adobe Target

Target has far superior functionality, it integrates with Adobe Analytics and is easy to build tests.

Magento Open Source

In a few words:
  • WooCommerce: easy to setup, huge community and easy to customize. Hard to scale, but can be done.
  • PrestaShop: poor brother of WooCommerce. Less community, less customization... not sure why anybody would use it.
  • Shopify: SaaS solution. Harder to customize (due to Shopify restrictions) but very easy to setup and has many nice add-ons. Hard to manage at scale.
  • Magento: good at scaling, expensive to customize and in general to develop. Hard to customize.

Magento Open Source

  • I think it is safe to say that without Magento Open Source we would not have a business so Magento has had an incredibly positive impact on our business. We essentially manage our entire website with Magento Open Source.
  • A "negative" impact is that some features were not available out of the box and we had to go to outside vendors or spend time developing custom solutions on our own. This obviously cost us money in the short term.
  • While Magento Open Source is complicated to learn, once you do pretty much anyone in our department is able to jump in and perform any task that they need done. The learning curve is a little steep, but it is very accessible once you know how to use it.
