Ahrefs

Ahrefs gives a good snapshot of inbound links, and has an incredibly large web index. This makes for quick identification of trends, but inaccuracy must always be considered within such a large dataset. When comparing other backlink tools, it's important to look into their process of discovering and indexing links to ensure that you get the most accurate picture for decision-making and strategy. In comparision to most other tools, Ahrefs link counts usually seem drastically inflated.

This is an essential tool for any website in my opinion. Google is the dominant search engine and this gives you the ability to directly influence how your site's pages, descriptions, etc appear in search results

Pros

  • Large data set of inbound links across a seemingly infinite set of websites and pages.
  • Intuitive interface and dashboard data that can be exported to a spreadsheet.
No photo available
  • Clearly flags areas where there are technical errors or "low-hanging fruit" we can address, such as duplicate title tags, security issues, or crawl errors.
  • Provides an easy way to keep Google up to date on our content/site organization - for example, the ability to upload/update sitemaps.
  • Offers sortable search analytics that allows us to determine if we're ranking for terms we think we should be, find unexpected search terms, or identify areas of underperformance. This helps us strategize around what content to create/optimize and potentially feeds into our paid search strategy.

Cons

  • I found it difficult to navigate which version of the data I'm looking at - exact URL, prefix, full domain w/ or w/o subdomains. I'd like this to be selected in the initial search rather than being automatically selected for you and then allowing you to change it (if you even realized it was an issue to begin with).
  • I'd love if there was a URL / domain ranking over time graph like there is for new / lost links. This way, it's not just a counting metric, but a metric on impact. I'd need to know that we lost 1 authoritative news media link more than I need to know that we lost 5-10 spammy scraper links from dark corners of the internet.
  • I'd love impactful alerts for link metrics as alluded to in the previous bullet. Meaning, I don't want to only find out we lost an important link when I see the rankings drop - I want to know about it when it happens for faster processing of the fix (if one exists).

  • I'd like more instructions about how to respond to certain errors I see - it can be difficult to understand when you see a red error message what it really means and how to fix it.
  • I'd appreciate warnings being 'ranked' somehow to understand what's really a big deal, and what might be a minor issue.
  • Search analytics is helpful but not comprehensive - you can only go back so far in the data, and can't see all the search terms that are sending traffic to your site.

Usability

Ahrefs7.0
Based on 1 answer
Ahrefs is very easy to use - you can jump right in and understand most of the assets. Overall, the dashboard snapshots give a very good picture of inbound link activity. For deeper analysis of historical trends, the system can become cumbersome, making it hard to do full work without exporting and reformatting the data.

Alternatives Considered

We use a suite of tools on my team, but Ahrefs is my daily tool because it has the richest feature-set and the best link index I've found. The crawler is also faster than other tools I've used.

Usually, I use multiple tools and GSC is the first on my list along with Google Analytics since both of these tools are free and are sufficient for monitoring, analyzing and managing digital marketing for a small business. However, there are some limitations to these tools like backlink tracking, the grouping of keywords and pages, or tracking traffic in other search engines like Bing, Yahoo, Yandex or Baidu. That's why some marketers choose to add paid tools like Ahrefs, Majestic, SEMRush or Moz to their arsenal.

Return on Investment

  • We've taken over 75% of our target keyword SERPs since we began using Ahrefs to track our strategy.

  • Google search console takes the guesswork out of sitemap performance and quickly identifies pages that aren't working properly or being crawled to the best of their ability.
