Amazon Chime

Amazon Chime is a superior alternative to other free video conference/conference call programs. The call and video quality are great, and you can have multiple participants on both video and call. It's well suited for an organization that wants an affordable option for video and conference calls, but may not be appropriate for organizations with limited budgets or those who do very little conferencing.

GoToWebinar

It's perfect for large-scale webinars where there is little need for an audience to audibly participate. I think it is less suited for small sessions where attendees need to be able to speak and interact. We love the ability to attach handouts and other content to the session itself, so all attendees have access to them. That's the number one request we receive in webinars, so it's nice to provide it right off the bat.

Pros

  • Great call quality! The conference line is crystal clear.
  • Strong video quality. We've never had problems with the video conference feed cutting out.
  • The app is pretty user friendly and easy to use.
  • Easy to send invites and to give teammates the ability to schedule calls/video conferences on behalf of another account.

  • Registration - Once we have tweaked registration details to our specific webinar, the tool handles everything from there, all the way through post-webinar follow-up.
  • In-session Q&A - It's easy to respond to individual attendee questions without interrupting the flow of the session for all other attendees. Responses to Q&A can happen on an individual or all-user level.
  • Polls - Results are displayed real-time within the session and are a good way to keep attendees attentive and engaged in the webinar. We can then match users to their specific poll answers in post-webinar reporting and have follow-up outreach key off of that data.

Cons

  • More simplified dial-in numbers. The PIN for our conference line is long and easy to mistype.
  • You do not have to download the Chime app in order to join a conference, but if you want to do anything beyond join (schedule a conference, participate in a group chat, control participants), you have to have the app downloaded and installed. The app that you have to download in order to launch a conference is a memory hog, and slows down a computer's boot up time.
  • The add-in for Microsoft Outlook is particularly clunky. It helps you add scheduled conference calls/video conferences to your Outlook calendar, but it can cause Outlook to crash, and creates a really slow open time for Outlook. If you can avoid downloading the Outlook Add-In, I would.
  • No built-in screen sharing capabilities.

  • Would like to see further opportunities for customization in the registration pages. There seems to be some hard-coded content that is difficult to remove.
  • Confirmation emails could benefit from additional branding opportunities beyond a simple logo.
  • Something that reminds me to record a session would be helpful. It's mostly just forgetfulness on the organizer's part, but an additional prompt would be appreciated.

Our largest issue with GoTo have been the limitations on recording and using recordings to host a webinar, and the biggest of those is the ability to record. We have had most of our webinars recorded successfully, but when it failed to save, it failed in a big way. Their customer service team was there to help, but they were unable to truly fix the problem. There are, of course, other providers, but as we are still seeing where hosted webinars fit in our marketing strategy, cost is an important factor. Since our company already uses GoToMeeting, it makes more sense for us to stay with the entire suite of products, especially while we are testing the strategy as a whole.

I have used Zoom, Join.me, and GoToWebinar. As a whole, GoToWebinar worked the most consistently. It wasn't as quick to set up compared to Join.me, but at the end of the day, it worked easily and didn't have to require users to download the software to use it, like Join.me does.

Alternatives Considered

Amazon Chime is great for call and video quality. It's pretty comparable to Zoom both in cost and capabilities. It's definitely superior to UberConference and Join.me, both of which are not particularly reliable. I have had call quality and the screen shares freeze up. Also, neither UberConference or Join.me have a video conferencing ability.

GoToWebinar was the best decision for comparing features and budget. ON24 had better branding and audience engagement options but came to be far above our budget limit.

Return on Investment

  • Amazon Chime has been an incredibly cost effective way to add video and conference line services (with screen sharing) to our day to day operations because we have an account for free for being Vonage customers.
  • A pro account only costs $15 a month, and you only need one pro account for a small office. If others in your organization need to join, all you need is a basic account to join. You need a pro account in order to launch and administer meetings.

  • It has allowed us to provide refresher training to clients without the need to travel to their locations.
  • It allows us to introduce new features quickly to a large number of clients at once.
