Confluence

I think [Atlassian] Confluence is an amazing option for larger companies however for a smaller team of less than 20 it might not be the best choice. It definitely helps our team stay connected while working remotely and we're able to stay on top of projects with ease.

Quip

I've found Quip to be extremely useful as a collaborative document sharing platform, moreso even than the Google suite, because the user interface is pleasing and intuitive, and it's much easier to organize and find files. If you prefer the File System Hierarchy style organization of Google Docs, Quip might not be for you - but if you're looking for a new take on organization with a more graphic feel to it, I would recommend giving Quip a try.I would say Quip is best suited for documents you're sharing or working on with an internal team, especially something that's for reference or a rough draft, since it's not big on formatting. This definitely isn't a platform for making a polished document to show off to customers, etc.

Pros

Confluence

  • QUICK How-to Guides that can be generated and share instantly
  • One can subscribe to the pages and spaces and receive updates in the feed on their home page
  • Automatic Email notifications of new updates in the Confluence area
  • The platform integrates easily with other Atlassian platforms including third-party apps thus improving its reliability

Quip

  • Search. Quip has a great search feature. Without it, it would not be the time-saving tool that it is. Why? Because Quip (the way we use it) houses a LOT of information. When I'm looking for a document, I can do a quick search without having to remember what path of folders I put the document in.
  • Client Sharing. I have a particular client whose sales I track every morning from their website. I update this document, which has formulas in it, to calculate all the necessary information that we need and the client is able to access it any time they want to see the numbers which saves the client an immense amount of time.
  • Privacy. My boss particularly likes this area as a small company with no HR department. He can keep employee files so that only he can view them without the risk of other people being able to see them.

Cons

Confluence

  • Over the past 6 years the feature set has not significantly expanded
  • Integrations with 3rd party apps (DropBox, Google Drive, Slack) is either through 3rd party plugins or rudimentary at best
  • Frequent interface upgrades and complicated permissions settings makes getting new employees up to speed fiddly in some cases
Anonymous | TrustRadius Reviewer

Quip

  • Quip office documents are not as full featured as Microsoft Office documents you may be used to. Mind you, there are thousands of features in MS Office documents. But even some of the more basic features are not available. I have many problems with formatting. The worst problem is when a document starts in something else like Microsoft Office and then you try to copy it to Quip. You usually end up having to re-write it if it was complicated.
  • Quip documents will feel slow compared to locally based documents. The performance is similar to what I have seen with O365 documents editing online and only a little slower than Google docs (Google docs do this surprisingly well). But if you are used to working fast in a document you will be challenged by the response time. The problem seems worse with more than 1 person in the document and especially if the document gets large.
  • It would be nice to see Quip embrace Google apps or O365 more. Many companies and users have one or more so would be nice to move between and not lose so much. These are competitors and I know why that would not be a priority but it does mean sometimes I may not put something in Quip.

I am confident that Atlassian can come with additional and innovative macros and functions to add value to Confluence. In 6 months, Atlassian transformed a good collaborative tools into a more comprehensive system that can help manage projects and processes, as well as "talk" with other Atlassian products like Jira. We are in fact learning more about Jira to evaluate a possible fit to complement our tool box.

Usability

Confluence 8.5

Confluence can - and in my personal opinion, it will - be a bit hard to use in the first moment. Atlassian is a great company and is eager to help you with any question you have, though. The interface seems to be a bit clumsy at first but the customization options are enough to make it easier and simpler. In general, Confluence is easy to use when you understand what each section does, but this can take a while.

It is the best collaboration tool in my company. Through it, the organization has achieved better connectivity and efficiency in its communication. Primarily, the docs feature of this software is the most utilized in the company. Slowly, dash-boarding and project management features have also been utilized. Generally, it is the best tool, very easy and fairly streamlined

Pages load very quickly, which makes it useful for quickly obtaining information. The search functionality is also very quick and is able to parse through all of the documents to provide the most relevant results for the query. Other information based software gets bogged down, but so far Atlassian Confluence maintains its performance.

This rating is specifically for Atlassian's self-help documentation on their website. Often times, it is not robust enough to cover a complex usage of one of their features. Frequently, you can find an answer on the web, but not from Atlassian. Instead, it is usually at a power user group elsewhere on the net.

I have never used Quip's support. To be fair, we hired someone who used to work for Quip before working at our company, and he implemented it and pushed it with the team. He was very biased toward the product, and yes it was better than Google Drive, but by how much?

Alternatives Considered

Confluence

[Atlassian] Confluence is backed by direct, and superior support from Atlassian versus their vendors. For end users, [Atlassian] Confluence provides way more options for layout and content, while also being simpler and easier to use. Most other tools also require a higher level of interaction with IT or global administrators. With confluence, both content creators and consumers can draft an consume content with a much smoother, more intuitive experience.

Quip

OneNote is a great product for collaboration and note taking, but we found it fell short compared to Quip in more formal document creation across teams. It also regularly had trouble bringing in outside members who did not have an institutional Microsoft account. Occasionally, we also had sync problems. Quip's simplicity and ability to provide better layers of security and collaboration overcame this key problem.

Return on Investment

Confluence

  • Confluence has increased cross-departmental visibility into content, activities, and projects
  • Confluence has also increased collaboration across teams
  • The lack of a workflow has created a wild west environment where stakeholders are confused of where to create and find various types of content
Anonymous | TrustRadius Reviewer

Quip

  • Since getting Quip, we've been able to move projects forward at a faster speed. There is more accountability among our team.
  • I was not the purchaser of the tool so I am unsure of its ROI.
  • Overall business objectives are being met with Quip and we see a good reduction in project lifecycle time.
