Miro
Chose Miro
Easier to create diagrams with build features. Easier to share it in remote meetings.
Chose Miro
Used MURAL on a training course, and while it was similar, Miro seemed better. I have not evaluated both on paid plans however as I only had guest access on MURAL.
Chose Miro
I’ve heard of mural but haven’t used it myself
Chose Miro
  • Is user-friendly and the guest users don't need to have an account.
  • The interface is more attractive.
  • You can customize a lot of things such as colours, notes sizes, etc.

Still the best IMHO for dynamic prototyping. Sometimes you need to wireframe novel on-page widgets, such as draggable search areas (in the context of map-based search), or interactive annotations on diagrams. And sometimes real data values are necessary for test participants to give good feedback. However, this is something of a niche scenario. The majority of uxers prefer xd or Figma and find that static prototypes (screen1->click->screen2) is sufficient.

Visualizing a process with a team that works remotely! It's absolutely fantastic for this and enables people to see the process from different perspectives so we can improve. For storing files and creating an "information repository" however, it's not so great. I usually just link to a SharePoint to get that done.

Pros
Axure Software Solutions
  • Adaptive views enable us to create truly responsive designs, even when they are very complex.
  • The platform’s many available templates and ability to create a library of reusable designs enables us to prototype faster and more efficiently than creating every single design from the ground up.
  • The company provides a lot of support options, from training videos to online forums. This is a pretty complex tool, so knowing that we can always look up or ask a question and get a quick answer has helped us immensely.
  • Axure’s comprehensive suite of tools to portray interactivity in prototypes has truly helped us show stakeholders and clients what an end product will look like, which has really helped us gain necessary internal and external buy-in.

  • Adding comments
  • Copying and moving comments form one section to the other
  • Adding Frames , objects, spreadsheet on the spot, as needed
  • The possibility to cover (hide) some parts of the board so the participants can concentrate on one at a time
  • The possibility to lock to parts to protect the design
  • The templates are amazing
  • The ability to change the colour of the comments, objects as you wish and as needed

Cons
Axure Software Solutions
  • The user interface is somewhat old and not always the most intuitive.
  • I've been using Axure RP for 5 years and often forget that it has a steep learning curve, which makes it harder to onboard new employees.
  • The "teams" functionality, as far as working and sharing the same files, has some room for performance improvements.
  • Results of the Preview function varies per browser (although it works best on Chrome).

  • The lines that connect bubbles I wish I had more control over their thickness and also if they could be solid, dotted or dashed.
  • I'd like to control the size better on the mind map. Sometimes it seems like I can only go up or down in 25% size increments.
  • When I use Stickies, I would like for them to move relative to the rest of the mind map, so they are still oriented the same way to where they were originally placed next to.

I use it almost daily, so we'd really like to keep using it. We have a lot of users using it on a daily basis. For me, it is the best online whiteboarding tool with the best functionalities available on the market. Even though people start coming back to the office, we keep using the tool very often

Usability
Axure Software Solutions
Axure feels like a tool that started with a simple interface that wasn't redesigned over time. Simple tasks sometimes require clicking through multiple layers. Crucial pieces of functionality are hidden under text links, or just flatly aren't discoverable. Much of the quirks of the interface only come from having screwed up numerous times, and knowing that certain things are just difficult to accomplish.

It's pretty easy to use. My gripes are with some small idiosyncrasies with selection behavior with objects and editing text. When I move an object, it automatically de-selects it when I am not done with it. I have to click to select again. Text control is challenging and could be improved. It could use a little more styling capability. It's also weird that it behaves differently in a shape then when using the text tool.

I only give a 9/10 because of the speed at which it loads. I have never experienced issues with Miro logging me out early, or some other technical issue causing the program to crash, or even it just loading in perpetuity without ever actually coming up (unlike other programs such as SFDC). It take a minute for all of my boards to come up after I click on it in my favorites, but besides that, it's all good.

I took the loading quickly to be related to availability which I commented on before, so ditto with those comment on load time here. Although to reemphasize, Miro doesn't crash or just refuse to load like some other programs. The weak point of Miro for me is integration of files like Word, Excel, or PowerPoint (especially the later two). When you embed these, it gets slow, and complicated to bring them up while you're in the application.

Support Rating
Axure Software Solutions
I've never used the support for Axure but they do have an online community that can be helpful when you're unsure how to accomplish a specific bit of interactivity. Overall the community for Axure is a great benefit for the software. There are also a lot of shared library assets which can help reduce the time you spend on projects.

The support staff at Miro are fantastic. Whenever I have had an issue, they have been timely and helpful with their response. They are also very knowledgeable and go out of their way to not only help, but offer proactive training sessions on different topics and new functionality so everyone can try it out.

Online Training

I think that the online training videos cover all product features and are a great resource to point people to. The newsletter is also frequent and passes on a range of tips and techniques for users that are eager to learn more, or just want to keep themselves up to date

Superb. very well explained videos. Really helps get the knowledge up on the product. The slides are divided into the topics of usage. I have enjoyed following and implementing all of these slides. The videos are well explained and it is easy to follow. There are tutorials that you can take yourself later. It would be nice however if more training modules were added.

The team used Miro overnight, because we started gradually with projects that lent themselves to it... we were looking for a platform to enable us to think and visually take our thoughts further with customers and internally. However, there's still a learning curve to develop... although all users, no matter how novice, can manage... but to really feel effective with the tool, you have to use it

Alternatives Considered
Axure Software Solutions
Since Axure RP is a desktop software that can work without a cloud connection, it is easy to have approved within a highly restricted corporate environment for a low cost with a small team. iRise is a solution that requires greater amounts of management, best service a group of designers in a corporate environment. InVision is cloud-based and, although not impossible, would require a long-term agreement to be made between the corporate and InVision. These could take years. Origami is free and desktop based and has great control of the transitions and data - but is so granular that additional time commitments may have to be made to make a prototype of this fidelity

Way more user-friendly and easier to use than Microsoft products for collaboration. Permissions are easier to set than on SharePoint, multiple people can work on the same document without version control issues that often plague our teams. I will create an entire landing board for each new project and upload related files and details so they are all easily accessed in one space.

Miro is great for scaling. In every department and subdivision across my entire organization, there is someone using it. From Sales to marketing, to manufacturing and operations; and even in legal and finance, there isn't a process or a department that is not using Miro, and if they aren't, they're missing out! Even at the highest to the lowest levels of the organization, it is essential for virtual collaboration.

  • Axure allows for us to quickly get the entire sales team trained on a specific narrative and gives them a fool proof click path for them to use in the demo.
  • Axure is relatively inexpensive and allows for purchasing the software without having to pay a monthly subscription (although they do have that option).
  • The Sketch integration has allowed for a 10 fold increase in productivity by taking designs already created in another program and quickly adding them to Axure.

  • I was able to complete a Customer Journey Map for a complex legacy product, with dozens of variables end-to-end across the customer experience, collaborating with a large established product support team, in only 2 workshops plus a couple hours "clean up" for presentation.
  • In my experience, working with established experienced teams who support legacy products, creating something as complex as a CJM covering dozens of customer experience variables, can take weeks. I honestly believe that as Miro was quick to understand, easy to use, it allowed all of us to create content with value, far quicker than traditional applications.
