Axure RP

Axure is a robust tool for teams who seek a reliable, proven, and powerful prototyping tool (and have the budget for it!). Because it has been around for a longer time than some similar products, it includes a ton of features to make incredibly realistic and interactive prototypes. Teams who use Axure will likely benefit from how the tool enables users to create master designs that designers can share and reuse, saving time that may otherwise have been spent building a design from the ground up. However, this tool can be very difficult for new users to learn, so it’s not a great solution for teams who don’t have a lot of wiggle room between adopting the tool and using it to create designs on a deadline. Also, the tool is less intuitive than some of its other competitors, which can make it more time-consuming to whip up a design. For teams who often need to iterate on prototypes quickly, Axure is likely not to be the most efficient solution.

Our Customer User Experience design team uses this frequently for whiteboarding sessions and introduced Miro to the rest of our Direct-to-Consumer team. I've used Miro in a small team setting for a whiteboarding session and also used Miro to facilitate a workshop with 150 colleagues. The user experience from everyone is it's very easy to use and a great way to have real-time collaboration work. No prior experience is needed to dive right in and use it for multiple purposes. I would highly recommend others if they are looking for ways to engage your teams, especially in our virtual working environment today.

Pros

Axure RP

  • Axure RP allows you to use adaptive views which is great for responsive design and development.
  • Axure RP is a very robust prototyping tool that has the ability to add realistic interactions.
  • There are numerous templates and formats available for wires, user flows, etc.
  • Master styles make it easy to update design features across numerous project pages, taking out the monotonous work.

Miro

  • The tools it offers cover everything I need - emojis? Yes!
  • The infinite artboard and use of frames are fabulous
  • The integration of apps (like Google drive and Jira) is SO helpful
  • The ability to align, group, and arrange like I would in a graphic editing program like Sketch makes it very intuitive
  • Being able to zoom in and out without having to click a tool speeds things up
  • Being able to bulk load stickies! Who thought of that? SO helpful!
  • The templates available plus the Miroverse means I can find everything I need
  • I LOVE that I can add an image as a cover. Seems like I am the only one in the company that knows this, so I have the prettiest boards! : )

Cons

Axure RP

  • Sharing and versioning of the prototypes when working with multiple designers. It uses Subversion to checkout pages and components while they are being worked on, but issues and errors occur frequently.
  • The functions that allow interactions can be basic and cumbersome so when it comes to complex animations or transitions, Axure could really use improvements. . Collision can happen with interactions causing unintended results. Workarounds have to be made to create a complex interaction to describe how the interaction should function.
  • Too many interactions or a large prototype can cause slow performance. So its better to keep the prototype small. However, a larger project would need a different solution or approach to manage features. Can be difficult when aiming for consistency within the interactive wire.

Miro

  • The zooming in and out sometimes confuses me.
  • Moving the templates around is also something I wish could be made easy.
  • There could be more colors to use on the stickies.
  • Interactive pictures could be added for customer journeys.
  • Cons could also be added just in case someone wants to indicate a system versus a product.

Miro is very good but still too basic. It would be great to have more precision and some advanced tools. More control over the text size and objects alignment is a need for our design team. Also, the experience on the tablets is not so good. Many dead clicks and problems while trying to select objects and tools.

Axure feels like a tool that started with a simple interface that wasn't redesigned over time. Simple tasks sometimes require clicking through multiple layers. Crucial pieces of functionality are hidden under text links, or just flatly aren't discoverable. Much of the quirks of the interface only come from having screwed up numerous times, and knowing that certain things are just difficult to accomplish.

There are some features that are a tiny bit clunky (having to switch between cursors to select vs. pan around the space). Also, there are inconsistencies in sizing we've found when pasting content into a board from another source which slows us down and is frustrating.

Most of the time pages load quickly but occasionally it does take time to point you to the area that you initially worked on.

I've never used the support for Axure but they do have an online community that can be helpful when you're unsure how to accomplish a specific bit of interactivity. Overall the community for Axure is a great benefit for the software. There are also a lot of shared library assets which can help reduce the time you spend on projects.

I have not needed much support from Miro. But when I have looked for information in the help page such as how to do something or why something was not working I got the responses very quickly.

Superb. very well explained videos. Really helps get the knowledge up on the product. The slides are divided into the topics of usage. I have enjoyed following and implementing all of these slides. The videos are well explained and it is easy to follow. There are tutorials that you can take yourself later. It would be nice however if more training modules were added.

The implementation of Miro from a software standpoint was easy. Miro can be either a web app or a program. I prefer to have the program and I feel like there are more accessible features, but I have not tested this theory. It was easy to get the team signed up and using Miro but a little more challenging for those who were not part of the company.

Alternatives Considered

Axure RP

Axure is more full features than most of its competitors. We needed the interactivity that Axure provides and that others were lacking in. We also had some individuals on the team that were familiar with Axure from their prior experience and we wanted to take advantage of that knowledge to quickly roll it out.

Miro

Before Miro, we tried different applications (such as Figma, Slite, and Notion). But we did not get the desired result. Because it does not provide the simplicity and instant collaboration convenience that we imagine on the basis of other applications. Some are very advanced design tools, some are useful only for note-taking features, but Miro offers a different and simpler usage opportunity.

Axure RP

  • Putting designs to paper makes it easier for those on the business side to evaluate the cost of the project beyond just looking at written requirements.
  • Axure licenses are very expensive and may not be well suited for small businesses or individuals.
  • Axure licenses are permanent rather than being subscription based which saves money in the long run.
