Blackboard Collaborate

Blackboard Collaborate is particularly well suited for one (or a few) speakers presenting information for a large number of more passive participants who may only interrupt for a few questions at a time. This makes it particularly well suited for a traditional education environment. It does not do well for meetings or group discussions where there may be more than 6 people who would like to be seen and heard during the session without having to constantly turn on and off their audio and video.

Pros

Blackboard Collaborate

  • The interactive whiteboard allows instructors to load PowerPoint or other presentations into the display which can then be highlighted, marked on, typed on, or used for real-time presentations with students.
  • Blackboard Collaborate features a robust desktop sharing component that allows instructors to share their entire desktop, portions of their desktop, or just specific applications with participants. They can also pass control over those applications to session participants. This is very useful for demonstrating software programs that session participants may not have on their own computers.
  • The user feedback buttons in Blackboard Collaborate allow session participants to express a variety of emotions during online sessions through buttons that represent a smiling face, thumbs down, and a confused face. In a face-to-face classroom, instructors who notice a confused face on some of their students know to stop and re-explain a concept. These digital faces provide the same interaction in the virtual classroom.

Microsoft Teams

  • Organization: Teams brings a familiar UI that enables individuals to understand the platform quickly. Furthermore, there are sections dedicated to specific platforms.
  • File Sharing: Finding stored documents is extremely efficient, especially when attempting to share data during the middle of a call.
  • Video/Chat Quality: Quality of calls is noticeably better than other Microsoft counterparts (Skype).
  • O365 Integration: O365 Users should be able to access their content across the multiple Microsoft channels.

Cons

Blackboard Collaborate

  • Blackboard Collaborate frequently causes us to see "Exception errors"
  • Students and teachers regularly get "kicked out" of the online classroom/lose connectivity
  • PowerPoints are static. Does not support animations unless using another program to upload.

Microsoft Teams

  • Outlook and Teams seem to perform similar functions that make them unnecessarily dependent on one another.
  • File sharing structure can have a large learning curve.
  • Permission settings are difficult, if not impossible to set up at the moment.

It is a tool that faculty likes to use. It has so much flexibility to allow students to see a class even if they happen to not be available in the classroom.

Usability

Blackboard Collaborate 8.9

Collaborate is a easy to use, easy to learn, and a well supported product. It is not overly complex yet it is quite feature rich. I think that most users (both instructors and students) should find it easy to use without much outside help.

Overall, it is easy to navigate and usability is great. The constraints around sharing files, managing notifications are lacking, and attending meetings via the mobile app are lacking

Reliability and Availability

Blackboard Collaborate

Blackboard Collaborate 8.0

The availability of the software is quite impressive. You can access it at any time that you want and from anywhere that you want, but that depends on how the software is set up by the University. There might be sudden outages due to not having enough space on your database, which we had that very issue happen recently here at our University. During that time, you could not access their blackboard at all until it was brought up online again.

The performance of the software is remarkable. The loading speed of the pages is more than satisfying, it all depends on the users internet package. So far, there wasn't any issue of Blackboard slowing down other software or systems when integrated with them

We have a dedicated Microsoft support person - she is fantastic. Anytime we have questions, we call her and figure out what we need to do. We even leveraged them to do company-wide training which was great. We did it over Teams! It was a great way to show off our new tools, and have everyone log into Teams and start using it. Support is just great. But you pay for it of course.

Alternatives Considered

Blackboard Collaborate

Blackboard Collaborate is the only program of this kind that I have used so far, therefore I cannot compare against other programs that are alike. But, I would say that I will be using this tool for a long time, because it offers me almost everything that I need as of right now.

Microsoft Teams

Microsoft Teams is better overall when used in a workstation to get things done collectively. You can share your screen with a simple call, @mention someone to notify them of things, insert your files or drive. It can do every thing these other applications are doing. What you are paying for in alternative products is the fact that someone went to the trouble to set up an out-of-the-box package, and more than likely will not fit your specific work needs. Moreover, I didn't realize there were ways I could be more efficient until I watched and read about building an MS Teams environment as it provides far more versatility, and makes it easier to get work done when compared to using the previous PM software that we tried.

Scalability

Blackboard Collaborate

Blackboard Collaborate 8.0
Based on 1 answer
The reason for this rating is that the software is a pretty good tool that can be utilized for use in all of the Universities around the world. It has the capability to fulfill the needs of various different education systems. Although, there are slight improvements that are needed, therefore the rating is at 8.

Return on Investment

Blackboard Collaborate

  • Increased communication between employees in different areas.
No photo available

Microsoft Teams

  • We now have quality meetings that we can track and refer to.
  • We were already paying for MS Office 365 - so it was way cheaper than any other PM software.
  • MS Office 365 Business and Teams can do everything a professional PM software can do. If you invest time into learning the program, and other suite features, you'll be as efficient as someone spending over 10k on their PM software annually. It's a bargain and no one takes advantage of it.
