Microsoft Teams

Can have group chats on topics that only concern a few employees. We have a Technology group where we add and brainstorm new applications and software that might be appropriate for our company. It's a good way to organize our ideas and thoughts without having to send out mass email chains and we can discuss the ideas at our next meeting. Microsoft Teams also lets us efficiently communicate with remote workers since email can lag. This allows almost real-time conversations and collaborations for our employees.

Pros

Microsoft Teams

  • The call quality is really good. I rarely have connectivity issues with MS Teams.
  • I love that I am able to share cloud versions of Word/Excel docs and it is housed within my chat or within my "team" that I create.
  • MS Teams screen sharing functionality is easy to use and not glitchy. I feel like it is straightforward and even first time users can figure out how to do it.

Cons

Microsoft Teams

  • Adding new users isn't instantaneous. I've found after approving a new user to join an existing Team, it can still take a few hours before they have access to the SharePoint documents. Everything else is pretty quick, but the document availability takes a few hours to propagate.
  • If you're a guest on another companies Teams site, switching between companies isn't smooth. Basically, you can exist in both at the same time, even if you're the same email/user for each one. You can only have one company open at any time. As a workaround, you can have multiple instances open in multiple browsers, but I typically use the locally installed software as my preferred usage over the web client.
  • Good and bad, you can almost add too much to a Team. What I mean is all the add-on integrations, Conversations, Files, Wiki, Planner, OneNote, Power BI, on and on. Sometimes it can be a big overwhelming all the choices you can make. But there's nothing wrong as much using it for Chat. Even just that is incredibly useful.

Usability

It has a lot of great features and we are working to roll it out to our whole organization. It sometimes feels a little under-developed or maybe under used. There are some things I wish it did better - like integrating the group calendar rather than my own calendar and letting us have instant chat vs persistent.

One of the things that Teams does incredibly well is ask after each video or audio call how the call quality was. It gives you an opportunity to give immediate feedback to their support teams about what the quality was like during the call and how it could have been better. I really like that.

Alternatives Considered

Microsoft Teams

Teams is like 100x better than Microsoft Lync for Mac. I also like how easy it is to manage threads and replies in Teams, similarly to Flowdock and Slack. I think that Slack offers better integrations, makes it easier to share files, has a better UI, is overall easier to use, but doesn't have as good web conferencing as Teams

Return on Investment

Microsoft Teams

  • The more employees using Teams, the better value the company will get (especially from increased work productivity).
  • Little investment due to Microsoft 365 Enterprise & Office 365 bundling.
  • With little to no time to implement Teams, the tool can have an instant ROI effect, but initially, user adoption and training can be slow to start.
