Crazy Egg

+ I strongly believe that this tool helps when a firm has good user count (depends on business model) as most of these tools are data friends. More data - more valuable insights+ Best fit if someone who is looking for deeper insights of individual page- Not suggested for very fewer visits of a website. Suggested to improve better visit count

Hotjar

Hotjar is suitable for tracking data. If you know a certain page isn't being visited on a site, Hotjar may provide extra insight into how many users are clicking CTAs to that page for instance. So Hotjar is a good tool to know the 'why' if something is going wrong on your website.Hotjar is less appropriate for use on its own; it should be used in conjunction with other data. This is because it can be unreliable. For instance, a heatmap may be unreliable if it hasn't rendered correctly.

Pros

  • Heatmap and scroll maps are definitely the biggest asset for Crazy Egg and this helps every marketer/business user to think a lot about the website and of course! this is the selling point for them too
  • Confetti feature is the 2nd and yes more important feature for someone who loves to compare user data with visits on the website. One need not go web analytics tools for other information as Confetti feature does most things happen
  • Overlay feature lets the user see clicks on every segment of the page with overall visits and LIVE visits.

  • User recordings are the most useful feature of Hotjar - they separate the tool from competitors by allowing an anecdotal, real-life view of users working their way through your website funnel.
  • The ability to deploy polls and surveys is a great feature to level up information gathering. Simple questions around intent/goals, objections or demographics can add color to your understanding of visitors and flesh out personas.
  • A core component of Hotjar is heatmaps. The fact that these heatmaps are segmented by device and offer click, mouse movement AND scroll tracking are crucial to understanding user interaction on web pages in aggregate. This is especially valuable on landing pages.

Cons

  • The largest thing we've struggled with is the Optimizely integration. I've contacted customer service a few times to get it properly setup. Customer Service is always friendly and helpful; they provide clear steps to get it setup. Unfortunately despite clear instructions, they are tedious, and if not completed in the correct order, the integration with Optimizely does not work. My success rate with the integration is less than 55%.

  • There's no mention on their product roadmap to integrate with Adobe Analytics or Target. This could be an issue further down the line with customers that run big websites. Heatmaps, Net Promoter Scores and visitor recordings are all good scenarios when we'd want to compliment with our digital analytics data and reporting.
  • We had an issue with a few heatmaps when the page is using unique div ids, however we received feedback that this is on the roadmap to be fixed.
  • I'd like better security options, this isn't a complaint specifically towards Hotjar as most SaaS platforms don't offer much. At a minimum you should be able to restrict login access by IP address.

We have a lot of clients. Some are appropriate for it, some not. It's 100% likely that we'll have some who can use it at any given point in time.

For what it costs (at least as of now!) it's too good a bargain to pass up as long as you are dedicated to using Hotjar even infrequently for finding opportunities for improvement on your site.

Crazy Egg is easy to use and understand. There are a few issues, yes, but updates roll out frequently that improve the experience.

It has never taken me more than a few seconds to figure out how to do what I want to do. I hope the Hotjar team remains committed to keeping the software intuitive to use as they continue to add more capabilities!

It's slow to post data, and slow to get a snapshot to finally be active (i.e. not pending). Not intolerable, but would be nice to see data within a couple hours. Often have to wait to the next day.

When I get an answer to my questions, it's very fast and usually very competent. But follow-up questions don't always get answered.

It is simple. JavaScript code needs to be added to any pages where you want to run tests. That's it.

Alternatives Considered

I'm an advanced user of Google Analytics and have used their 'In Page Analytics' reporting before quite a bit. Google Analytics has one advantage in this regard, in that the click maps within these tools are integrated into all of the other metrics which GA provides. That said, Crazy Egg's reporting is miles above that of Google Analytics in terms of the visual presentation, which is a key point when presenting to non-technical folks. Crazy Egg also shows information about the exact spots that users clicked on a page (which GA does not). The scrollmap feature of Crazy Egg is also not included in any form within GA.

Hotjar provides a variety of features typically available in multiple other products. We used it to replace (or instead of) several other products. It may not be best-in-class at every single feature it provides, but Hotjar is the lowest hassle way to make quick impact if you have limited time and resources.

Scalability

Crazy Egg9.8
Based on 2 answers
Its reliability (not scaleability, as the question asks for, sorry) is pretty good but through our testing we know that some clicks do not get recorded. It doesn't bother us a lot because we look at the aggregate of thousands of visits, but we do know it misses things. As for scaleability, it's about right. You really don't want zillions of clicks per snapshot - the screen just turns to 100% dots and you lose the ability to differentiate different screen areas. We find that 25,000 clicks for a page gives us a really good view.

Return on Investment

  • Helped us increase blog ad clicks by a huge % (I wish I remember the exact percentage, but I believe it was 300%+ or something close to there).
  • Helped us make data-driven decisions on how to update and design our website.
  • Allows us to easily A/B test changes on website and measure data-driven results.

  • Hotjar has led to new work that might not have previously come in.
  • For how cheap it is, we've been able to utilize it to enhance all of our website projects and make more money off of them.
