Crazy Egg

Crazy Egg is great if you have static content and want to be able to easily set up heatmaps and scrollmaps to see how people interact with your webpages across different devices types. Straightforward and reliable. In circumstances when you want fast turnarounds, Crazy Egg isn't the right tool as the visualisations often take the better part of a day to generate. It also doesn't perform well if your site has dynamic content - either AJAX-driven or dynamically expanding.

Hotjar

For user behavior analysis on a website, whether it be e-commerce, lead-generation or SaaS, Hotjar is a fantastic solution. Tracking individual landing page interaction (scroll depth, mouse clicks), recording user behavior on mobile devices, or initiating polls and surveys all packed together in one tool and delivered at a great price make Hotjar my go-to UX software for websites.

Pros

  • Easy integration. When we first started Crazy Egg, I was able to quickly and easily add it to our tag manager.
  • Quick setup and live URL testing to make sure test is properly working. There's no guessword; I plug in the URL and it does the work!
  • It's a simple software to use for quick information about how user's are interacting with our site. I don't have to jump through a lot of hoops to get to the data.

  • User recordings are the most useful feature of Hotjar - they separate the tool from competitors by allowing an anecdotal, real-life view of users working their way through your website funnel.
  • The ability to deploy polls and surveys is a great feature to level up information gathering. Simple questions around intent/goals, objections or demographics can add color to your understanding of visitors and flesh out personas.
  • A core component of Hotjar is heatmaps. The fact that these heatmaps are segmented by device and offer click, mouse movement AND scroll tracking are crucial to understanding user interaction on web pages in aggregate. This is especially valuable on landing pages.

Cons

  • The largest thing we've struggled with is the Optimizely integration. I've contacted customer service a few times to get it properly setup. Customer Service is always friendly and helpful; they provide clear steps to get it setup. Unfortunately despite clear instructions, they are tedious, and if not completed in the correct order, the integration with Optimizely does not work. My success rate with the integration is less than 55%.

  • There's no mention on their product roadmap to integrate with Adobe Analytics or Target. This could be an issue further down the line with customers that run big websites. Heatmaps, Net Promoter Scores and visitor recordings are all good scenarios when we'd want to compliment with our digital analytics data and reporting.
  • We had an issue with a few heatmaps when the page is using unique div ids, however we received feedback that this is on the roadmap to be fixed.
  • I'd like better security options, this isn't a complaint specifically towards Hotjar as most SaaS platforms don't offer much. At a minimum you should be able to restrict login access by IP address.

It's a great tool considering how inexpensive it is. If used correctly and you have a plan for tracking your websites, this tool can make a world of a difference. If you are not going to sit down and take the time to make a plan for how to use this tool, I would say it is not worth your time. Yes, you can look at items on your website that need to be changed, but without a consistent plan, other important items that need changing can be lost in the mix. Make sure you have enough time and energy to invest in this and it will be well worth it

For what it costs (at least as of now!) it's too good a bargain to pass up as long as you are dedicated to using Hotjar even infrequently for finding opportunities for improvement on your site.

Usability

If it's installed on appropriate pages it's highly intuitive and usable. If the pages aren't appropriate, it's very frustrating and confusing and disappointing for the client.

It has never taken me more than a few seconds to figure out how to do what I want to do. I hope the Hotjar team remains committed to keeping the software intuitive to use as they continue to add more capabilities!

Reliability and Availability

It's slow to post data, and slow to get a snapshot to finally be active (i.e. not pending). Not intolerable, but would be nice to see data within a couple hours. Often have to wait to the next day.

Support

Their support and fast responses show how much they care about their customers. Even if there have been little bugs that aren't a huge deal, the response time is still wonderful. I have emailed them several times and within the next day, they have responded with an answer. There have been one or two times where they have no idea of a bug and were not able to supply an answer to us, but these were minor and they still responded quickly.

Alternatives Considered

The company actually still uses Optimizely and Google Analytics as well. Optimizely works well with Crazy Egg because we can do beta testing not only to see if the conversion rate goes up (Optimizely), but also see how the user is interacting with the change (Crazy Egg). Google Analytics is in a class of its own. I don't feel it can directly be compared to Crazy Egg because, while it tracks what the user is doing, you are not visibly able to see it. Having that visible aspect on Crazy Egg is great!

Hotjar provides a variety of features typically available in multiple other products. We used it to replace (or instead of) several other products. It may not be best-in-class at every single feature it provides, but Hotjar is the lowest hassle way to make quick impact if you have limited time and resources.

Scalability

Crazy Egg9.8
Based on 2 answers
Its reliability (not scaleability, as the question asks for, sorry) is pretty good but through our testing we know that some clicks do not get recorded. It doesn't bother us a lot because we look at the aggregate of thousands of visits, but we do know it misses things. As for scaleability, it's about right. You really don't want zillions of clicks per snapshot - the screen just turns to 100% dots and you lose the ability to differentiate different screen areas. We find that 25,000 clicks for a page gives us a really good view.

Return on Investment

  • Helped us increase blog ad clicks by a huge % (I wish I remember the exact percentage, but I believe it was 300%+ or something close to there).
  • Helped us make data-driven decisions on how to update and design our website.
  • Allows us to easily A/B test changes on website and measure data-driven results.

  • We've used Hotjar to improve engagement by removing clearly confusing navigation paths or interface options.
  • We've used Hotjar to improve conversion by fixing lead form issues that weren't obvious at first.
