Dynatrace is well suited to a number of tasks. It is important to determine who the end users are and gather good information to tailor their experience accordingly. For instance, business/marketing should not have access to some of the more technical data, and business metrics can be a distraction for IT operations personnel.

Datacenter Consolidation and Hardware Optimization: This scenario is relevant to you as a hardware manager. It applies when you have physical servers (like Power or System z) and want to maximize virtual machine density. Why it works: IBM Turbonomic analyzes the peak usage times of each VM. If VM "A" is active during the day and VM "B" at night, it places them on the same physical host. Ideal scenario: Data migration projects or when you're told, "[...], there's no budget for more servers this year, make everything fit on what we have." Pros
    Dynatrace LLC
    • We loved Dynatrace's ability to show the data flow - from the front end points through the back end points straight to the database and various API's. It was advanced in its data visualization. This is useful for debugging - showing when/where the errors are. It can even enable non-technical individuals in the corporation to help debug
    • Dynatrace has some great highly customizable integration options as well as monitoring. You can configure your layout & integration options to create custom monitoring alerts for your applications performance. Further you can increase the extensibility of using a REST API on your architecture.
    • Some advanced dev-ops systems are utilizing Kubernetes/docker aswell as Node.JS - Dynatrace was able to log and help understand all of our dev-ops needs. It gave us native alerts based off of deviations from the baseline that we set during initial configuration. These metrics are priceless.

    • Sumo Logic allowed for our InfoSec team to ingest logs from our CDN directly, in real-time, instead of massive compressed archives that were sent every two-hours (the only alternative at the time). Sumo Logic had an app for these logs, that allowed us to easily get an immediate payoff from the data, with canned dashboard and saved searches.
    • Sumo Logic has a fairly extensive REST API when it comes to log sources, source configurations, dashboard data, searches, etc. Their wiki for the API is usually kept up to date.
    • Sumo Logic, during the period of time I had used their product, had added the ability to configure agents via configuration files. This allowed customers to configure their endpoints, and modify the endpoints, with configuration management tools like Chef / Puppet / Salt. Beforehand, the only option was to always make changes either via the web portal or REST API.
    • The solutions engineers were extremely helpful, and easily reachable when issues would occur.
    • Users at our company found it easy to get started, working on new dashboards, scheduled searches, and alerting. The alerting worked well with our third-party paging tool.

    Cons
    Dynatrace LLC
    • Dynatrace does not monitor easily on AIX OS.
    • Dynatrace does not monitor easily on a C-based application.
    • The way DPGR is addressed by Dynatrace is not very complete, and not clear. One thing is to mask the IP and request attributes but is not enough, the replay session feature is great but raises serious questions about user tracking.

    • It would be nice if the UI included a break-down of features that are both licensed as well as un-licensed. That way, you could not only see what you have, but what you don't.
    • The right-sizing recommendations are great, but very little info is given about why the recommendation is being made. More info would not only increase understanding, but would also help drive decision-making.

We are certainly happy with Turbonomic as a whole and have invested quite a bit of time and effort into learning the ins and outs of the product. We have our reporting setup the way we want it and have gained definite value from these features. I will say though that many products nowadays are offering more native monitoring, reporting, and alerting features which may eventually steer us away from this product

Dynatrace is feature rich and often many way to get to the required data. We have 150+ users and one thing we have to do is provide training. Otherwise users can get lost when drilling down through services and traces. The filtering options help to reduce the noise and focus on the area concerned. When give people access to logs we need guardrails to ensure queries are targeted. This helps with cost control.

Synthetic Monitoring automatically does what other products do only through the use of other tools or through the development of user applications that still have a high cost of maintenance. The other products are not immediately usable and require many customizations. Through the use of configuration automatisms, you can be immediately operational and, in our case, we detected several imperfections in the applications.

Screenshot of IBM Turbonomic Action Center, where it shows the list of optimization actions across the global environment—on-prem and cloud—that should be taken to minimize cost while assuring performance.Screenshot of IBM Turbonomic Application, a view that shows the global environment across private and public infrastructure from the context of individual application components. Users can optimize one application at a time by viewing each app's pending actions. The Supply Chain at left shows all of the entities across applications and their interdependencies.Screenshot of The IBM Turbonomic Cloud Executive Dashboard, an out of the box dashboard that allow users to rapidly communicate value to executives. This view shows the cloud cost savings opportunities realized and not yet realized over any time period.Screenshot of The IBM Turbonomic On-prem Executive Dashboard, an out of the box dashboard that allow users to rapidly communicate value to executives. This view shows the savings opportunities realized and not yet realized over any time period.Screenshot of an IBM Turbonomic Cloud view, where the public cloud environment(s) and all of the pending actions required to bring them into an efficient, performant state. The Supply Chain at left shows all of the entities in the public cloud(s) and their interdependencies.Screenshot of The IBM Turbonomic On-Prem view that shows the user's private data center environment(s) and all of the pending actions required to bring them into an efficient, performant state.
