We evaluated several tools when it came to selecting Session Replay and it came down to FullStory and Smartlook. Overall, we found the interface on FullStory to be cleaner and more intuitive and we received input from engineering and support teams that the sessions were easier โฆ
I used FullStory for the past 4 years and I loved it, but I never really used all the functionalities it offers because the price is insane high for the type of company I worked for. With Smartlook I feel I have access to more functionalities with a much better deal.
Smartlook gave us better data with faster set-up, smaller learning curve, and for far less expensive compared to FullStory and other tools we evaluated. Because we manage several sites but are a small shop, it is really important to us that our analytics tools are easy to set โฆ
Like I mentioned, Smartlook is younger than FullStory and it seems like they're trying to improve. The dashboards are lacking. I wish I had more control over what I see there instead of the standard. We use the API to determine customer name and company and I'd like to see some โฆ
FullStory is more complex, detailed, better-looking and way more expensive. Therefore I think it makes sense to start with Smartlook at least. FullStory also has yearly plans which is really annoying. Hotjar doesn't have browser error logging which is a huge disadvantage for โฆ
It was extremely useful in identifying places in our product where things weren't functioning, or where it looked like action was available to the end user but in reality, it was not and therefore caused lots of confusion. It doesn't help as much in other scenarios to see what catches a user's Eye or where they go if they leave our application as well as an actual in-person interview would help with eye-tracking software.
Smartlook is best for screen recordings. Especially when you are running MVPs. However, its pricing is very high. If your daily visitors are too much then either you will have to lose many of your recordings or you will have to pay too much money.
The ramp-up time to learn the entire product can take a little while. There are just so many absolutely wonderful tools and different ways to look at the same type of information that it can take a new user a few weeks to understand and then more time to master. However, FullStory has a ton of training resources to help with that! A lot of my own teammates have taught themselves FullStory through those training resources.
The UX of the product is totally wonderful, but there are tiny things that make getting to certain parts of the product slightly more challenging (like clicking into a modal in a modal). Sometimes buttons or links are placed out of my field of view, but those are minor things I notice because I work in UX.
It's been a phenomenal tool for us; every department that uses it has found something new and unexpected that it can do that they're really excited about. Even if we *only* used it for bug triage, it would be worth our time and money. The fact that we can use it for so many other things as well--gauging how customers interact and use our site, identifying UI problems, etc.--is above and beyond
As my ratings show, I have been absolutely delighted with Smartlook in terms of usability, cost, support, and its benefit to our organization. I have given it such high ratings because I think it has really benefitted our organization and I think it could do the same for other companies too.
Every page, the tool setup pages and dashboards are built very well, the site structure is perfectly designed and intuitive to use. All functions are well documented and the help sections are really everywhere, you don't have to search for answers, as they are just popped up or max. a click away for your service.
They have been overall pretty responsive and proactive. The tool is pretty straightforward to use. Most of the questions we have had to work with them on our how to use new features or adjust our integration to ensure we are gathering all the data from all of our tools.
Sofia P. is being our point of contact with the issues we faced. I was unsure about how to explain to her what was going on with the recording numbers (the recording has stopped before we were expecting to), but she readily understood and came with a solution for us in the same day. The problem was blocking our developer to test the integration, so it was great to have support so fast that he could continue his work.

It has been a year between the time when I last used Hotjar and first started using Smartlook. I would say both tools are more or less equal when it comes to features, the only 2 differences I can think of are - price and customer support. Smartlook is cheaper and has superior customer services. You have the feeling when interacting with them that they genuinely care.
