HipChat

HipChat is best for startups with less than 10 employees, since it's free, where collaboration and constant communication are very important. Since it runs on most of the devices, it reduces the friction of staying connected with the team(s). HipChat can be hosted internally, very few companies provide self-hosted chat applications and most of them are cloud-based. If privacy is your concern, HipChat works very well.Cost goes up with team size in an exponential manner, this is where HipChat doesn't seem very useful for what it was intended for (not sure if this has changed). It's not so fun application when compared with Slack.

Pros

HipChat

  • The fact that if you're not online, you will receive an email from HipChat when someone talks to you. So, when a question about things is answered, you don't have to be online to get it.
  • HipChat lets you talk to everyone or anyone. It's great to be able to talk to the whole crew at the same time! We have some pretty fun conversations. The fact that you can talk to all, a few, or just one-on-one is a must for any company to thrive.
  • I love the emoticons, and the fact that you can make your own. You can really get to know a person this way. I made my own signature good-bye, so everyone knows when I'm signing off. It's great to be able to communicate that way!

Cons

HipChat

  • You can't mention people in rooms/groups that they are not in. If they leave the room/group, they will not see the notification.
  • Slack has more emojis and icons which brings them closer to how people use their cell phones in text conversations.
  • There is not an option to share screens if a problem arises that is bigger than text communication.

I don't have insights as I was not a part of the implementation. However, I love the end product

Alternatives Considered

HipChat

We tried a lot of chat clients before choosing HipChat. The Skype for Business UI on the Mac side was 5 years old and terrible. Mac users hated the app including our CTO. Cisco Jabber was expensive to license and maintain; Skype was open to the public which took time away due to users dealing with spam and could allow viruses and malware. HipChat being a closed product, centrally managed and available to try without an upfront investment was perfect for our environment. All our Agile teams have their own room, chat and can communicate with others quickly and easily.

Scalability

Actually I never shared of HipChat using with more than 25 persons in team simultaneously, but I believe it can be scaled for much largest collaboration teams. At least it works flawlessly for us, with transparent integration with Jira, and I am not see any reasons for some troubles for work at big scale.

Return on Investment

HipChat

  • HipChat has increased the effiency with which I am able to communicate with my coworkers, particularly those who work out of other offices. Having a light, portable messaging solution has been beneficial for checking in on small things without the need to send emails or schedule phone calls.
