Highlights

MIP Fund Accounting and Sage Intacct are both accounting software that have strong reporting capabilities and extended accounting capabilities like payroll. They also each have features designed for nonprofit organizations. However, MIP Fund Accounting specializes in nonprofits and government agencies, while Sage Intacct is more broadly applicable, with additional light ERP capabilities.

Sage Intacct is more commonly used by larger businesses or businesses experiencing rapid growth, as well as companies that benefit from ERP functions like inventory management native to their accounting system. In contrast, MIP Fund Accounting is more commonly used by small to midsize nonprofits, as well as higher education institutions or government agencies.

Features

MIP Fund Accounting and Sage Intacct both have strong feature sets tailored to their target audiences.

MIP’s focus on nonprofits best serves those organizations with unique nonprofit accounting needs. For instance, MIP’s grant and fund tracking mechanism is among the best available and is the leading competitive advantage for the platform over more general accounting systems. MIP Fund Accounting’s customer support is also held in high regard by many reviewers. For nonprofits who may not have access to robust accounting departments, this level of customer support can be particularly impactful.

Sage Intacct excels in its support for scaling businesses and organizations that require more specialized or customized deployments. When first implemented, Intacct allows organizations to tailor areas like data models and reports to their specific needs. This flexibility also allows users to adjust the platform and data structures as business needs grow and evolve over time, mitigating the risk of accounting bottlenecks and inefficiencies.

Limitations

While both products have their respective strengths, MIP Fund Accounting and Sage Intacct also have some limitations, often around pricing and their ease of use.

MIP’s weakness is the accessibility of its payroll and reporting capabilities. These functions have both been difficult for some users to utilize easily and effectively. The modularized pricing structure MIP offers can also be confusing for some organizations to navigate to ensure they’re getting the functionality they need. This modularized pricing system can also lead to unnecessary costs.

Along similar lines, Sage Intacct’s customizability also entails a harsher learning curve. Training and learning on the platform can be difficult in general, but this process is exacerbated in customization-heavy areas, like reporting. It can also be cost-prohibitive for smaller companies, and costs can stack up if businesses require additional add-ons for more specialized accounting functions.

Pricing

Sage Intacct’s pricing varies with each customer. Concrete pricing numbers are available by quote from the vendor.

MIP Fund Accounting’s pricing is also specific to each customer. Pricing is available by quote from the vendor.

Sage Intacct

I'm still learning the functionality and there are definitely some issues with regards to Balance Sheet postings. Yes, the details should be in the subsidiary ledgers as well as the Income Statement but the summary's should be able to be seen when viewing the BS accounts and if detail is needed, then there should be drill down. However, I am thrilled to be using Sage as it is leaps and bounds better then our legacy system. I'm sure my rating will go up after I have used the solution more.

MIP Fund Accounting

Well-suited for basic accounting, I would give it an 8. Drill-down would be nice on the general ledger to be able to look at the original entry. Maintaining the year codes and distribution codes is much too involved-this needs to be streamlined. Would be nice to be able to update information on encumbrances and purchase orders prior payment. The accounts receivable module is a bit of a nightmare-we don't use the invoicing function as it is too involved for our company. While the Accounting function deserves and 8, I would only give the payroll function about a 4.5-sorry.

Pros

Sage Intacct

  • Financial Reporting - multiple reporting options that can be customized. Real-time financial data at your fingertips with a push of a button.
  • Multi-entity environment where you can toggle between entities with ease.
  • Dashboard capabilities to summarize financial data on a single screen.

MIP Fund Accounting

  • The interface and operations of Abila MIP Fund are fairly easy to utilize and learn.
  • It offers some excellent tools for managing a non-profit operation.
  • The software makes it easy to streamline operations into one system without dealing with separate departments working with different systems.

Cons

Sage Intacct

  • Although the reporting is great, it is far more sophisticated than what I was used to. Grasping the reporting can take a lot of time, but once I got it I got it.
  • Implementation was stressful, but any conversion of a GL is. However, knowing what I do now, I would have set up some dimensions a little different than what I did.
  • Some of the training videos and help center information on newer products within Intacct do not have enough detailed information to be helpful. Understanding the basics is easy, but diving deeper into the product there are not always enough training materials.

MIP Fund Accounting

  • It would be nice to switch between databases without having to logout and login.
  • When entering codes (like for a journal entry) it doesn't auto-search/fill the account numbers...you have to hit the dropdown and scroll for the number.
  • You can't post cash receipts without first having an invoice, which can slow down your processing.

If you are not an accountant, it would be very difficult to use. As an accountant there are aspects that are so specific that if you do not understand how they work and hand off to other parts of the software, you can really mess up your reporting.

currently you must submit a ticket via the customer portal and then wait for a response. The time you must wait for the response varies based on the urgency of your request. Sometimes you just need a quick response and a phone call would be easier or even a live chat ~ would love to see them roll that out instead of having to wait when you have a question or issue.

They consistently provide quality, knowledgeable service to my questions and concerns. The only reason I am not giving them a 10 is because recently the hold time on the telephone has been much longer than in the past. the quality of the customer service, once I speak to a representative continues to be of a high quality, but the delays are atypical of previous encounters.

There are no specifics on what happens if you make one choice or another to know which is the best selection. This is true for JVs and AP. In training we were not given specifics of what happens when one possibility is selected over another.

It was great for generic training but we had the system modified by our third party implementer and a lot of that was not covered in various training's that we received or took online. Attended Advantage last year and that as super helpful in learning a lot of the intricacies of the system.

I would not use a thrid party administrator to implement your system, especially if you are going to be modifying the system at all. Use Intacct implementors as they will be able to better support you on any issues that come up after you go live.

Having a detailed plan helps. Understanding what your data 'means' is important so it can be correctly mapped to the new solution. Having other staff in on the early training helped as well. We had a few questions that popped up that our implementer was able to address promptly which then prompted the controller to ask even more detailed questions. In the end, we ended up with a better product. Keep in mind, you won't remember to ask all of the relevant questions and you may run into 'challenges' after the fact

I have used Great Plains, QuickBooks, MAS90, and several others and none of them had the functionality, ease of use, and intuitiveness that this product has. We are able to streamline tasks, minimize data entry, conduct intercompany transactions with ease, and automate the accounts payable approval process which has saved both time and money. I am so excited to have this software and to be able to focus on other tasks. We have taken our month end close down to less than 10 days which has resulted in more timely reporting and the ability to move between entities makes everything easier. It's just a fabulous product!

Not real sure what you mean by scalability. It seems to be able to handle all of the funds we are currently working with. If you mean the looks of it, some things are small and it would be nice to increase the size according to the user.

Return on Investment

  • We are able to perform allocations from our Central operations into our campuses on a monthly basis. This really helps us when it is time to analyze a campus to see if they are profitable from a direct expense versus allocation methodology.

  • Abila has streamlined and allowed more tasks to be automated maximizing the efficiency of staff so more staff is not needed.
  • The Maintenance and Support annual fee is a bit expensive and not a very good return especially for the amount of features that are updated from year to year. I don't use support a lot since our systems are pretty efficient so hence I don't think the annual M&S is justifiable.
  • Abila's importing feature allows integration to many different systems which makes Abila very flexible allowing costs to be saved if the owner of the Abila system switches between vendors.
