Considered Multiple Products
Maxio
Chose Maxio
Both are great, Maxio is a bit more user friendly than Stripe in my opinion
Chose Maxio
Maxio (via information we found on their website and in the initial sales call) seemed like the most comprehensive fit at the time and we liked the interface. We eventually found out that there was a massive gap between what was promised us and what was actually delivered. …
Chose Maxio
I inherited SaaSOptics from several predecessors that worked on it before me. I believe they used Chargebee or Chargify before SaaSOptics, but I haven't used them. I pray that the market comes up with a better product for subscription revenue management, SaaS metric reporting, …
Chose Maxio
The reporting is better than what I've used in other products. I have been very impressed with the range and availability of the metrics. It's been a few years since I used Recurly regularly, but I have no need to look elsewhere for billing management needs after working with …
Chose Maxio
QuickBooks is what we originally used for invoicing, but we outgrew that and it was taking up a lot of time to manually create invoices. We also were tracking invoicing on an Excel spreadsheet for 500 customers, so there was a lot of room for error. SaaSOptics eliminated these …
Chose Maxio
Chargify is easier to use and manage. The Achilles heel is the 3rd-party integrations, where the options are limited. If managing a few products or businesses, this can be the more ideal option. WooCommerce has easy integration with WordPress but it requires the help of …
Chose Maxio
We did not evaluate other options. We decided to go with Chargify based on the ease of use and the ability to have multiple sites within one account. It accomplished what we needed to and for a price that was within our budget. At the time, Chargify was a great fit and we …
Chose Maxio
The other products (QuickBooks and Salesforce) are complementary to SaaSOptics. I have not used any products that compete directly with SaaSOptics although I understand there are several out there.
Chose Maxio
I researched other options for Revenue Recognition, but SaaS integrates with QB Desktop, was reasonably priced and met all of our objectives.
Chose Maxio
Insight squared did not integrate with HubSpot which is what we use as our CRM. We chose SaaSOptics because it offered GAAP compliant revenue recognition, great reporting, and the user experience quality was high.
Chose Maxio
Zuora is a B2C subscription billing system best used for companies like Netflix. For a B2B company, the sales process can be much more complex and Zuora was never able to handle that. For the 2 years we struggled with Zuora (now referred to the dark ages within our company) we …
We evaluated Recurly early on but rejected it because at the time it did not support the payment gateway we needed, and lacked some metered billing stuff that we needed. I understand they now have improved, but we did not go back to re-try them.
Chose Maxio
We evaluated several recurring billing services - but Chargify was the only one we found that supported our current merchant portal. They had the widest selection of merchant portals - and the most competitive service fees.
Chose Maxio
I was not part of the decision to select Chargify.
Chose Maxio

Chargify met a list of set requirements and our budget at the time. The main items were:

  1. Salesforce integration
Chose Maxio
We previously used another recurring processor. Although their product worked well and was much cheaper, their customer service became increasingly less responsive. Chargify's API is equally easy to implement as our previous recurring payment processor..
Chose Maxio
Pricing ends up being pretty close across the board with their main competitors. What it came down to for us is having a vendor that went the extra mile and we felt that Chagify met that and they have exceeded that expectation.

Chose Zuora
Zuora provides way more functionality than Recurly or SaasOptics as a billing engine. However, it is not a general ledger system like NetSuite ERP, it is still designed to be primarily a billing function that feeds into a general ledger via automated general entries. It has …
Chose Zuora
I personally have not used other billing products and don't have anything to compare Zuora to. I have only heard from co-workers that our previous solution did not meet our needs and that is why we moved to Zuora.
Chose Zuora
Other software may just set up payment schedules, but do not really give the options to upsell or change subscription plans like Zuora. The system also does need automatically matched payments to the invoice like Zuora. This freed up human capital for us to work on other tasks.
Chose Zuora
In its focused area of subscription management, Zuora does well against competitors. There are some aspects of the tool that appear to attempt to be more "platform" oriented, but fall off quickly. NetSuite and SFDC are not reporting tools, but they look great when compared to …
Chose Zuora
Again it is still too early to tell as we have only just started using Zuora. We hope it will blow us away.
Chose Zuora
We are currently considering switching to Salesforce CPQ, due to the high cost of Zuora and level of customization it has required. Zuora meets all of our needs, it just comes with a hefty price tag.
Chose Zuora
I don't know of the current capabilities of the nearest competitors to Zuora as it's been in our business 5 years now. At the time we looked there was no realistic competition and Zuora was a no-brainer! As it's always done what we needed we have not had the need to look …
Chose Zuora
We had attempted to move away from Zuora last year due to the high cost, but were unable to because: Intacct did not support our payment gateway or have SalesForce quoting Recurly does not have usage tiers in their SalesForce quoting QuickBooks does not have the bells and …

Chose Zuora
As a hosting organization, Zuora does not easily talk to outside systems.
Chose Zuora
I especially like the invoices and that refunds are added to them after issuing. Also the clear design is a plus. For us it is very important to locate payments and accounts quickly and this works fine.
Chose Zuora
I find Zuora really good for our purpose, but I won't be really able to compare it properly to other systems.

For sure it is really good for us since we can get all the necessary information and perform all our tasks in an efficient platform. It's great in the case of renewals, …
Chose Zuora
Zuora has been a great tool and we are very happy across all departments.
Chose Zuora
More customization is offered by Zuora, such as for permitting multiple sales channels and sales processes. Zuora is too expensive and in hindsight not worth the benefit realized after we are implemented now.
Chose Zuora
Brightpearl is an amazing omnichannel retail management solution with live accounting, however, it is not the best fit for a subscription based business and does not track recurring revenue the way that Zuora does. Again I will reiterate that the automated invoicing and …
Chose Zuora

Chose Zuora
As previously noted the automated billing, recurring billing - touchless approach has been extremely helpful and cremated scalability for our high volume business.
Chose Zuora
It's not the greatest for accounting close since it's not our main system. It helps give us an idea of our overall A/R and products, and pricing.
Chose Zuora
I think once we finally have everything finished it will be vastly superior to our old system. There is so much more that it can handle doing and it is far more organized (especially with financial tracking) than our old system. Again, there have been a lot of growing pains …

SaaSOptics is awesome for growing companies that want to automate their invoicing. I like that it is also aimed at subscription based sales structures rather than sales that occur at a single point in time (but has the ability to support both). SaaSOptics makes it super easy to keep track of subscriptions, renewals, co-terms, etc. The reporting is a great feature, but we are unable to use most of the reports as we are a cash-based accounting firm. SO caters to accrual accounting and GAAP compliant firms which makes sense as it is the most commonly accepted accounting basis here in the US, but many small SaaS start-ups are still operating on cash basis. We are one of those companies, so we are able to get a ton of use out of the invoicing side of things, a lot of the reports are useless for us. We also wish SO had a commission module since we already integrate our CRM and accounting softwares into it, but that is not a make it or break it for us. We love the time SO has saved us.

It is well suited in a geographically distributed environment where you have various key participants in multiple time zones providing input and necessary explanations on performance and measured success It is less appropriate where you have a single office environment with a single finance department working together. It is also less suited when the GL is NOT an Oracle product and the interface between the GL and the reporting software needs to be implemented with utmost care and handling.

Zuroa is very well-suited for B2B businesses that primarily have a subscription stream of revenue. It is less appropriate for B2C and retail, if you are only selling one-time products or services, this tool would be overkill and confusing instead of helpful. However, if you need to recognize revenue from subscriptions over the service period, Zuora is a lifesaver.

Pros
  • Chargify's API is solid and easy to use, including JSON and XML interfaces.
  • Chargify's customer service is responsive and thorough; always making sure your needs as a customer are met.
  • Chargify listens to its customer base and their suggestions for feature enhancements.

  • Account Reconciliation CLoud Services provides tight integration with Oracle R12 and 11i . Provides drillback capability. It is flexible and provides rich functionality to users.
  • We have implemented ARCS on cloud and migrated planning and budgeting from On premise to PBCS and EPBCS. Functionality is onpar with onpremise. Provides regular updates monthly
  • We don't need to upgrades every year and saved a lot on Hardware.

  • The implementation of Zuora is very helpful. Their interactive training guides are one of the best I've used. It is very thorough and any salesperson can learn how to use it very quickly.
  • Their subscription management offers many ways to sell a subscription. These subscriptions can be evergreen (renewing every month) or termed subscriptions. The subscriptions can be amended to add/remove products very easily.
  • The ability to quickly pass through large amounts of usage data for our clients is allowing us to perform billing in a time-effective manner. Once usage data is loaded, a few clicks and all of the invoices for our client base can be generated. Invoices are clean and detailed which help us maintain a good customer experience even with our somewhat complex billing model. The reporting is extremely helpful in calculating the end of month commissions, recognizing and deferring revenue, and overall bookkeeping.

Cons
  • We have contracts that are 12 months long but customers pay monthly. When terms change (raise or lower price) mid contract, changes are not easy.
  • AR collection was an issue. However, SaaSOptics just released a report to track outstanding invoices and it works great.
  • Integration with QuickBooks is OK but it isn't straightforward to issue a credit memo for a particular customer.

  • Our implementation consultant set up all the business rules for calculations to get us live, and we may have difficulty setting up new ones going forward. We feel like that we now need to hire someone who has the technical knowledge to help us to manage the system going forward.

  • User Interface - Zuora's UI is still a weak point, however, this is negated through the use of its API's. Zuora has done a lot of work in releasing new products to limit its UI experience and the addition of Orders allows for more functionality to reduce the UI issue.
  • Complex system - This is both a pro and a con, but in this instance, it is a con because we may not have taken the time to truly understand the implications of all the options that were available. the Flexibility is great however if you do not take the time to understand the product and what problem you are trying to solve, you can make life difficult for yourself later down the track. Take the time to map out your approach end to end and ensure your assumptions at the start are robust.
  • Reporting - reporting is weak as such we have moved away to our own reporting data warehouse.

We have a pretty good userbase who are at the high level who gained value from this tool. Discontinuing this tool is prone to impact their day to day operations. Also the data in this tool cannot alter the source, which maintains the integrity of this tool. Smartview is a cool addition that gained lot of traction as well.

Our business is now, more than ever, focused on our core business rather than homegrown support tools for quoting, contracts, billing, invoicing, payments and the rest of the subscription economy. We evaluated other solutions and found this the best and most viable solution given the strong ties to Salesforce and it's integration. Zuora works, and it works well.

There is definitely a learning curve - to me the UI for reporting was not intuitive and often required me to ask our RevOps to pull data for me

They are willing to help with most challenges and are pretty easy to get ahold of by phone. They are limited in their reach, when it comes to bulk cancellations, along with some other bulk edits. It is no fault to them, Chargify is just a system that hasn’t been upgraded much over the years.

Support from our implementation partner is a 10/10, but support from Oracle is awful. Case in point: recently over a 2-day period, there were a series of intermittent outages. Oracle actually asked US for the outage time-stamps. I would have thought that, since we were paying them, they should probably be able to tell us!

A support request is emailed to their support team, then an automated response is sent to you in a couple hours saying "Hey, someone will take a look at your support request soon". Then somewhere around 12-18 hours later, an actual support member responds with "Have you checked out our tutorials? Here's one that sounds like it might help you". I don't want a tutorial given to me that I've already read through that only exists because of the terrible user design of Zuora's user interface

The biggest key is data validation time. If you are implementing a new chart of accounts along with Oracle Financial Consolidation and Close Cloud, you need to multiply the time you think you can perform data validation by 2. The key to managing your project timeline is managing your expectations around data validation as well. For instance, it is recommended you convert 1-3 years vs. 5 years.

I think Zuora did a great job. However, they could have provided more guidance on how to deal with out Payment Gateway and Processor provider, as well as guidance around providing a Mobile Responsive experience for sites using the Zuora HPM.

Alternatives Considered
Maxio (via information we found on their website and in the initial sales call) seemed like the most comprehensive fit at the time and we liked the interface. We eventually found out that there was a massive gap between what was promised us and what was actually delivered. Below is an excerpt to an email that we sent to the technical solutions consultant and sales rep three months after purchase: "I am, however, frustrated that a solution promised in the demo call ended up being a solution that was so cumbersome that 1) no one knew how to implement it except [tech consultant], who I was never able to get ahold of 2) it delayed our launch by two months and resulted in real frustration for my team and thousands of dollars in lost revenue and 3) brought more effort and annoyance to our customers than we were anticipating. I'm bringing this to your attention because I strongly feel that there has been a discrepancy between possible solutions and actual solutions. It is frustrating to make a purchase decision based on features discussed during a demo call, develop a plan of action based on what was discussed, and then have to iterate for months on end. It is also frustrating to hear that something is an "easy" solution by one team member and then hear it is "difficult and not recommended" by another."

Oracle Planning and Budgeting Cloud is one of the more robust and well-rounded EPMs on the market. It comes with robust out-of-the-box functionality which is a great benefit in comparison to its peers. The Excel integration is also top notch which Financial Analysts really appreciate. Cost is a little high and maintenance is a bit heaver than other tools so that is something to consider. The product keeps improving!
