New Relic

For monitoring specific URLs for response time, tracking performance of an application over time, and being able to drill down to the function level where an app component might be experiencing an issue, it seems to be well suited. Also, the overall NR suite seems to experience rapid changes, which could potentially be somewhat unsettling to users who are trying to get familiar with a feature area. I'm unsure also, how consistently these are documented. It seems to have less ability them some other products, to be able to see what low-level procedures on the code or DB side could be bottlenecks.

As with any solution, it depends on how and why you want to deploy it. OpenShift is excellent for medium to large deployments, but I would caution against smaller deployments unless you're planning on ramping up to a larger deployment in short order. It just doesn't make financial sense to deploy it in a small configuration.

Pros

New Relic

  • The New Relic agent does a great job of monitoring and profiling an application.
  • The New Relic alerts make it easy for us to define when individuals should be alerted to an issue.
  • New Relic Synthetics helps us monitor our websites and provide insights into our uptimes.

Red Hat OpenShift

  • Pre built cartridges, giving a huge range of software ready to go. Reduces the amount of time required to get up and running.
  • Integration with GIT was an advantage, cloning the repo and making changes was straight forward.
  • Speed, creating an environment in minutes, ready to deploy.

Cons

New Relic

  • Sometimes we can't drill down deep enough on errors or traces.
  • Inter communication paths are not obvious (stack) though service maps are helpful at times.
  • I often feel like it's not really built for cloud monitoring and microservices.
  • There are additional plugins that our IT dept can't seem to get working with our product, like Kubernetes, PostgreSQL.

Red Hat OpenShift

  • I would like to see a public cloud using OpenShift and Docker integration. I am not aware if this is already available now.
  • I would like to see a tool that can help with extracting log files from the remote server like it being available on a Samba shared folder. And other applications that want to scan for keywords in the application log can check if there have been any errors or exceptions thrown by the application.

I have not yet found any similar product that offers me this range of features to help us keep our online service fast and reliable. Besides this, New Relic is constantly evolving by adding new plugins to emerging technologies and platforms. Server performance measuring features are a key point as our user database grows.

Leverage OpenShift Online constantly at both the free and paid tiers. While AWS is convenient, it often brings more administration than I want to deal with for a quick application (i.e. Drupal or Wordpress blog). OpenShift also simplifies the DNS registration and ability to share application environments with team members

As an engineer, New Relic has been very quick and easy for me to pick up/install/use. It has been less easy for some of the less technical-minded folks in our organization and their UI still is inconsistent multiple years after refactoring their platform to be New Relic One.

It is easy to understand. Gives our team freedom to focus on the quality of our coding and not worry too much about build and deployment which honestly can be a headache for some of us. Also, customer support is fast and responsive so we don't have to wait for weeks for issues to get fixed.

There are times I feel that the initial support is lacking. And in some cases the automated responses of not hearing anything are annoying if the reason why there has been no movement is because we are still waiting to hear back from NR support. So, i think they should loose the automation as it can seem disingenuous

First of all OpenShift Help Portal is a great place to get assistance in case of any OpenShift platform related technical questions. When it comes to paid support subscription friendly support agents can find the right answer for you in a matter of minutes which is super efficient way of solving any critical issues.

The documentation was clear and concise; the only issue we ran into was custom application naming. Due to HTTPD mod_fcgid and the need for the application name to be set in php.ini (not in .htaccess or the virtual host directive) ... we had issues setting this up.

Alternatives Considered

New Relic

New Relic has a lot of benefits comparing to other solutions. The main one is usability, compared to other solutions on the market, the interface and usability beats everything else and without good user experience, the user tends to ignore the solution.Great APM integration, easy and simple, which our developing teams love. And Synthetics is way ahead of anything out there, very simple and robust solution that gives us a lot of resources.

Red Hat OpenShift

For large to medium deployments the Red Hat OpenShift works great and better than other products. There is an advantage of integrating it with the GIT repository that makes the work quite easy and the user interface is quite easy to understand for a beginner too. OpenShift is inexpensive when it comes to cost and it doesn't take much time to run your application.

New Relic

  • I can't speak to this specifically as I'm just an end user, so I'll speak in terms of the impact on our team. We've used New Relic to monitor a new page we're still in the process of fully rolling out.
  • It allows us to keep an eye on our overall page performance (several different metrics), JavaScript error rate, and other custom logging to make sure the new page is not having any significant downturns in these areas.
  • By comparing these stats to the previous version of the page, we can feel confident in continuing to roll out the new page, and get early warning signs if something goes wrong.
  • Our high priority alerts are tied in to OpsGenie so we get custom notifications off hours.

Red Hat OpenShift

  • I have been able to cut my hosting costs almost to zero without sacrificing the ability to handle higher loads down the road.
  • I haven't received messages about the site being down since I started using OpenShift. I don't have to worry about fixing things myself when/if the network or some hardware fails.
