Skyward SMS is a versatile student management system that is widely used across various departments in schools. With its user-focused platform, educators can effectively focus on educating students and making informed decisions. The software serves as a centralized database for student information, including schedules, grades, behavior history, and contact details. Teachers find the software user-friendly and reliable for tasks such as entering grades and taking attendance. Additionally, Skyward SMS enhances communication between students, teachers, and parents, facilitating data collection and organization. Parents and students also benefit from the system by being able to access grades, receive messages from teachers, and monitor assignments. Moreover, the software's ability to share student information across years and locations within the school district makes it a convenient tool for administrators to manage various school-related tasks such as business operations, scheduling, grades, and food service. Overall, Skyward SMS has proven to be effective and useful for teachers, schools, and the entire district by increasing productivity through instant access to information and enabling accurate record-keeping while promoting communication among all stakeholders involved in a student's education journey.

This issue has created frustration among teachers who rely on accurate grade calculations for their students' academic progress.

My school uses Skyward Student Management System for grading, attendance, and student/parent communications. In My opinion, the attendance and grading features are worthwhile. I do not use the communications aspect, as we also use Google Classroom and it has easier to use options to communicate with students and parents using its Gmail interface.
  • Grading
  • Attendance
  • Report Card posting
  • Does not import assignments or grades from Google Classroom
  • Software times out too quickly, if inactive for a short period of time
  • Should come with "Intro to Skyward Student Management System" video trainings for new teachers or people who have not used this software tool before.
Appropriate for grade tracking and attendance.

Not sure where it would be inappropriate but there are certainly things it could do better, as I noted in a previous question.

To be honest, I would prefer that our school switch to the Google platform entirely, so that all elements are self contained. Many if our teachers use GC for classroom activities and then need to re-enter grading info into Skyward Student Management System, as there is no way to import the grade/assignment data.

As a music teacher, I teach the entire school population. Currently, I teach 10 classes. My grades are in the following categories, class work, tests, research, and couple more. I tend to put my work into subcategories in participation, and application of skills. What I wish I knew to do was transfer grades from Google Classroom into Skyward Student Management System. That knowledge is not intuitive for me. That would save me quite a bit of time.
  • Stores identifying student information
  • Ease of adding events with editable dates
  • Includes room for comments
  • Computes overall total grade
  • The ability to transfer grades from spreadsheets into Skyward Student Management System
Skyward Student Management System is particularly well suited to put in applicable assignments and grades for students in grades K-8. Generally, I find it easy to use. In fact, when I have new students, who are not always able to spell their names correctly, I go straight to Skyward Student Management System and look up the information.

  • I use this platform as a teacher, not an admin, so I don't have numbers of users
  • I believe my district thinks it great, because the entire district uses it.
I don't access to all of students' information in Google Classroom. I only get their student number. With Skyward Student Management System, I can access background information, which often gives me insight into student behavioral challenges. What I really enjoyed about working with Skyward Student Management System, was when I learned how to use it in District [...]. By the time I got to District [...], I entered my grades seamlessly.

We use Skyward Student Management System to manage all of our student and employee data. On the student side, the most common usage includes family contact information, student identification and photos, current courses, photo permissions and emergency contacts. On the staff side, the most common usages are for submitting and approving timesheets, sick leave, vacation and managing tax forms.
  • Student and family contact information
  • Storing unique data on students (photo permission, classes, etc.)
  • Employee management (timesheet, vacation, sick leave, etc.)
  • UI could use an update to be more user friendly.
  • Search functionality is not great on the student side.
It's a great back-end database system. I would recommend it to a colleague at another education-focused institution as it is very secure and provides you with all of the data management tools that you would need for K-12. It does a good job for employee management, too, and it's never bad to bundle your systems/services together.

Skyward is the school district's main Learning Management System (LMS). It tracks student grades, discipline, and attendance. As well as many other important pieces of information, including demographic information, IEP/504 information, and any medical alert information. It also serves as a host for communication between teachers/school staff and families, as parents can send a message to all of their student's teachers from one place, and teachers can send messages to students, parents, or both from the messaging center.
  • Allow custom grading categories with editable weight.
  • Automatically calculate midterm and final grades.
  • Store data for students across their entire educational career.
  • Integration with outside systems (Google Classroom) can be clunky at times (though it has gotten better with time.)
  • Student search can only be done by last name.
  • Messaging is not well integrated into the entire application, it can only be accessed from the messaging center.
There is nothing specific that I would say sets it apart from any other LMS, but once you are used to the user interface and various features, it does everything that is needed and integrates well enough with other software to function. Probably isn't necessary in a smaller setting, but for multiple building districts, it is certainly robust enough to handle data collection and storage.

  • Consolidates grading, attendance, etc. all in one place.
  • Manages data from over 2000 students in 6 buildings K-12.
  • Been used by district for over 20 years.
I was not part of the selection team, which was done at the ISD level, but it was selected over others for its ability to integrate many different functions and features into one platform. So, instead of having to purchase multiple products to accomplish all we need, Skyward allows schools to get everything in one place.

Learning Management System (LMS). They store and organize all school-related data of students in the district. Including but not limited to grades, attendance, demographic data, class schedule, discipline, IEP/504, and health alerts. Teachers can enter grades, and students and parents go here to view grades as well as class schedules.

The district tech department handles all in-house support for Skyward SMS. They maintain the functionality of the system, reset user passwords, create classes, and update user data.
  • Grade tracking and entry.
  • Documenting student attendance.
  • Creating class schedules.
  • Pull grades to setup lunchtime study table.
  • Track eligibility for athletics.
  • Send mass communication to parents.
  • Create in class assessments that auto-grade and update in real time.
  • Sync grades from another LMS like Google Classroom.
  • Allow students to see available courses and create their own schedule.
It is the system I am most comfortable with, so having to learn a new system outweighs any problems I have with Skyward.
Not Sure
  • Integration with Other Systems
I was not part of the purchasing process, so this question isn't relevant.
Focus mostly on ease of integration, as teachers all have different preferences when it comes to online resources. Having a system that easily integrates with other programs saves so much time for teachers.
  • Implemented in-house
  • Migrating old data.
  • Training staff on use.
  • Onboarding guardians.

It takes some time to get used to navigating the features and layers, but once you know your way around it, it's pretty good.
  • Entering student grades.
  • Entering class attendance.
  • Modifying individual student attendance.
  • Modifying grades after initial entry.
  • Updating missing assignments for a student.
  • Scheduling messages for students/guardians.
Yes
The mobile interface is very basic, the first thing you see when entering the app is the option to open the full application on a browser. The app only really works for student attendance and viewing/modifying grades one student at a time.
