Overall Satisfaction with BigCommerce

BigCommerce is our online e-commerce platform - We sell to both wholesale and retail customers. We use it across the whole organization and it is the main gateway for retail purchases and for smaller wholesale accounts.
  • Easy to use/navigate, you don't need to be a coder/programmer to use it. We switched from Magento and were so tired of always having to hire someone for the smallest tasks that we couldn't complete on our own.
  • Excellent customer service - They are always available (amazing), courteous and knowledgeable. This alone is worth the purchase.
  • Solid platform, no glitches or things to figure out on your own. No chance of being hacked (this happened to us!).
  • Great knowledge base and forum to ask questions. Their own people also comment and add to the conversation. You can submit your ideas and they are responsive - They implemented one of my mine.
  • One of BigCommerce's selling points is that they are the only e-commerce platform that is B2B AND B3C ready out of the box. That is true to some extent, but there are things that are basic functionalities missing. You can have customer groups (wholesale, retail, etc) But there is no way to create sales reports by customer group! To know your store's performance in each group you have to use a work-around and export all orders and tally them up yourself. This needs to change.
  • There is a known issue with Google Analytics and BC's data, they acknowledge it when we've called about it, people have complained about it in forums, but hasn't been solved. Again, the only way to get accurate numbers is to export all orders and tally it up yourself. In essence your data in Google Analytics, BigCommerce own "store performance" home screen when you log into your store's back end, and what you tally up are three different values. They should be identical. We are talking # of orders, total sales, etc. Really essential stuff.
  • To put products on sale for just one customer group (as opposed to store wide for all groups - which is rarely the case when you run both a wholesale and retail business) you have to create promotions for each single product you want to put on sale, and yes, promotions can have a condition that restricts them to a single customer group - but you have to do it for every single product you put on sale. Unless you have an entire category on sale - which for us it is rare.
  • It has allowed us to streamline operations, as it is way easier to maintain than our older Magento site, no need for constant developer help.
  • We have been with BC for over a year now, our sales have gone up somewhat, but our organic search has gone way down. The migration wasn't handled properly and we lost ranking status on Google. We were the #1 listing in our category, that is gone. I wish more support was offered for this. They have a launch package you can purchase for $1,500 which we didn't because we were already spending so much with the whole migration. But truthfully - this support should be included. After all, you don't platform every day and they're getting a long term customer, it's in their best interest for the transition to be successful.
We haven't scaled yet, so I don't know exactly how to answer this. But there are tasks that need to be done manually that if they were to scale would be tedious.
We are only at the beginning of using the integrations, and so far so good. I don't have much feedback in this area.
BigCommerce has a good balance between being "all done for you" and mega easy to use (like Shopify), and being a developer yourself and having endless capabilities at your disposal if you know how to use them (WooCommerce). BigCommerce has a ton of capabilities (not everything we want) and it is easy to use. Some things have a learning curve but they are doable. And they have real people on the phone who answer super quick every time- that for me is the real plus. You get live help, when you need it, fast. In the end, no platform is perfect, but for what's out there, BC was the best choice for us.
BigCommerce claims it is out of the box ready for B2B as well as B2C. I think it needs to have some major modifications to claim that statement to be completely true on the B2B side. It works great as a B2C platform. and even better if you only have one customer group (retail OR wholesale). For this purpose, it is golden. If you run both a wholesale and retail business that claim is a bit lofty. As an example, we have lost $245 on an order because a wholesale customer got a hold of a retail coupon with a discount and used it, and because the platform didn't restrict coupon codes by customer group they got away with it. This functionality has been fixed now as of Nov 2019, but these are the kinds of things we encounter that are not great as both a B2B as well as B2C.
