Overall Satisfaction with Chartbeat

A daily, live view of traffic and engagement to our site. We use it to make commissioning and promotion decisions by telling us what our readers are most interested in, and where they are finding out content. Our entire newsroom uses Chartbeat dashboard and the live view overlay on our site.

  • I'd like to be able to see more detail on traffic sources in the historical view on specific articles
  • Incorporating competitor analysis would be useful
  • Improving the search function when you don't have the full url of an historic article
  • It's helped increase our search traffic by guiding our commissioning based on topics we're thriving on
  • It's increased understanding across the newsroom on metrics we work towards
  • It can lead to traffic chasing, and losing site of brand when people get too lost in the data
We've benefited hugely. It makes our newsroom far more agile and reactive to what our audience want. It's transformed our priorities and commissioning process. We adapt in real-time what content we create, and where we push it, based on our live audience data in Chartbeat
Super simple interface. Suitable for all levels of ability in the newsroom, allowing a simple overview, or a more detailed analysis for those who require it.
We use a/b testing to optimise headlines. We use engagement metrics to determine which topics we commission longer reads on. We monitor traffic sources closely to decide where to push different content, and in which formats.
We noticed that the vast majority of our audience are on mobile, so we told all producers to preview content in mobile view rather than desktop. We see this reverse slightly on different days, so publish content accordingly. We've use dwell time metrics to determine which topics to produce long reads on, and conversely on straight news and sport stories we changed our advice to make standard stories shorter and dwell was low and people just wanted the facts.
We use Chartbeat in conjuction with these tools. Chartbeat is forward facing and we encourage everyone in the newsroom to use it. It provides the best live view, but lacks depth needed for more longer-term trend reporting and analysis. Domo allows much more advanced data visualisation. Adobe Analytics allows for much longer historical data, and a lot more detail

It's instant, simple to use and easy to disseminate around the entire newsroom. It links easily to our live site. The downside of Chartbeat for us is the lack of detailed report creation. For this we still require an additional programme like Adobe or Domo. This is required for more detail on user behaviour, onward journey etc
