Overall Satisfaction with New Relic
New Relic is mostly used for front end monitoring (Browser) to capture metrics related to pages/rendering. It is also used to measure site availability and user journey proactively using new relic synthetics section. New relic is also used for backend monitoring for a few applications, using APM agents. It is also used to fetch historical data to compare before and after changes
Pros
- Capturing Front end Metrics specially web vitals and setting up alerts for violations really helps.
- NRQL is great tool to fetch the data you need. With queries you can pull the data and put the data by table or by chart. You can even trend graphs and create dashboards.
- Synthetic Monitoring is very helpful for proactive monitoring. You can use it for user journeys by using scripted browser monitor type or just check availability using PING type.
- ASk AI is great addition that can fetch details you need with natuaral language
Cons
- AI - Need to leverage AI for observability and predictable alerts
- Session replays can be improved by leveraging data to create conversion funnels , unique dashboards etc..
- Cross account (subaccounts) visibility in user management
- Proactive Monitoring helps in identifying issues before actual customer reports
- Alerts on violations helps in maintaining application availability status without further degradation
- Helps to improve customer experience by keeping a check on web vitals
New Relic has full stack picture. One can setup browser (which I use mostly) piece to look into front end metrics that can give great insights on how real users are seeing your application from their end specially core web vitals, js errors, latency etc... APM is another piece which gives you all necessary dashboards including health checks, backend latencies, integrations etc... This holistic design of the new relic tool helps with overall performance of application and keep check on overall system upkeeping
New Relic helps us with both on-prem and cloud environments monitoring, It enables a smooth transition without gaps in performance data. On prem we had to bear the cost for maintaining all logs, metrics and all other data even for instrumentation point of view. With cloud that cost has reduced by a significant margin. Also, scaling by adding resources for peak events adds additional cost and is tied to monitoring. This has reduced all such costs.
We leverage New Relic's alerts on real user metrics (RUM) so we are proactively monitoring user behaviour. Devops also uses deployment markers to know what change caused / triggered deviations in any metrics. Devops also uses NR to assess increase in pageviews / traffic to individual applications and to compare these metrics with historical data
New Relic has full stack visibility and gives us all options for observability like one stop shop. It gives you front end, backend as well synthetic monitoring capabilities.
Every other feature built into one cost model (usually) which ties to data that you send, it helps you leverage all features without having to pay additional charge for feature
