Overall Satisfaction with PagerDuty
We use Pager Duty to communicate alerts generated by infrastructure monitoring. It's used by teams across our entire organization. It solves the problem of centralizing alert notification by giving us one place to collect and distribute alerts. Also, it does a great job with escalating alerts.
- Multi channel notification.
- Incident management
- On-call schedule management.
- Better observability of notifications.
- Better scheduling of on-call.
- An introduction into incident management.
Honestly, we have never known PD to go down! It's always been there when we needed it. I don't recall any instances where our systems alerted and PD failed to get the word out. If it was ever the case, it was because the system that reported to PD failed or was not configured properly. PD has been rock solid.
We use the slack and New Relic integrations extensively. since NR is our monitor, it is the first line for sending notifications. In most cases that means it reports into pager duty and PD amplifies the message. Slack integration is great because it gives us a record that is easy to review after incidents. Specifically when the incident started, who ack'd the alert, and when the incident was resolved. The on-call folks get all that information but the Slack integration is helpful for sharing these details with management and other teams.
Our workflows are not automated that I know of. If this is an example though, I have my notifications set up to alert mobile, send a text immediately, then call my phone within 5 minutes if the alert is not ack'd.
We do not use PD analytics.
We have used New Relic notifications but find PD notifications to be richer and more easily accessible from mobile apps.
