Overall Satisfaction with Rubrik

We use Rubrik to protect all of our on-prem MSSQL, Oracle, and DB2 databases from Cyber and Ransomware attacks as well as test/dev refreshes. The Live Mount feature really saves us a lot of time and resources when a user simply needs to recover data from a single table since we are able to give them a point in time copy of the database within minutes versus trying to find a server with the right software versions and storage to do a full restore which might take hours.

Pros

  • It just works right out of the box. No customizations were needed to start using.
  • It protects several types of databases such as IBM DB2 that are not protected by competing products.
  • The Rubrik Support team is very knowledgeable and responsive to our issues.

Cons

  • There is not yet a point-click recovery of IBM DB2 databases through the GUI, so it would be nice to see this developed.
  • The feature to Live-mount an Oracle database using +ASM storage is challenging for various reasons, so there could be some improvement there.

  • Significantly reduced man-hours needed to manage database protection/recoveries.
  • Allows us to use a single backup/recovery solution for ALL database backups.
There are some types of recoveries that could use better GUI integration.
There is no comparison, Rubrik worked right out of the box and even has support for IBM DB2 databases. Patches and upgrades have been performed without any issues. Database backups are run using default settings without any noticeable impact on the databases/servers and complete as quickly or nearly as quickly as native backups. Cohesity on the other hand needed extensive, on-going, custom tuning via undocumented parameters just to keep it working, and every patch broke the solution which then required more custom tuning. There were also issues with backup performance, we had to balance the impact of the backups on the database versus the amount of time it took to run the backups. We even reverted back to native backups for some of our larger databases because they just would not complete in Cohesity.

We installed Rubrik and were able to start using it immediately without having to make any customizations or special tuning. We installed agents and backed up databases without any noticeable impact. Patches and upgrades have been applied without any issues.
Compared to the previous product we used, which we worked with for nearly two years tuning, upgrading, and more tuning just to try to get it working, and every patch broke it, sometimes taking days to resolve.
Rubrik has been a great partner and is adding new features and functionality, and their support team has been very knowledgeable and responsive.

Using Rubrik

10 - Rubrik is use by Database administrators, AIX/Linux/Windows server admins, and Exchange administrators. We also be using it to protect VMWare as soon as we add more capacity to the Rubrik clusters.
3 - Our Rubrik admins are backup administrators and server admins as they occasionally replace failed drives, etc.

Rubrik has worked exceedingly well for us. Database backups do not impact the application/database performance and the instant recovery features save us a lot of time and resources. We are still adding more on-prem protection sources to Rubrik and will probably have a need to backup cloud sources in the near future.

Evaluating Rubrik and Competitors

Yes - We purchased Rubrik to replace two previous products, Cohesity and EMC Avamar/DataDomain. We first attempted to replace the EMC DataDomain with Cohesity, but it just did not work for us. After nearly two years of working with Cohesity, we finally replaced it with Rubrik which not only worked well, but also had the features we needed to fully replace the EMC DataDomain.

I just worked right out of the box. We did not have to waste any time doing custom tuning to get it to work, and even better it had no noticeable impact on systems we were protecting.
Don't always select the lowest priced offer. Look at the current GA feature set, and do a true proof-of-concept evaluation, and pay close attention to the results of the POC.

Change management was minimal - The Rubrik solution was implemented along side our previous solutions so we were able to migrate service over with minimal change management impact.

Rubrik Support

Rubrik support always responds quickly to new requests to start the communication. Many times they respond quickly with the solution, or with a reference to their knowledge base and/or documentation where the solution may be found. In cases that require more troubleshooting or more complex resolution, the support analysts do a good job of providing frequent updates. And int the event you need immediate attention, then you can escalate cases through the Support Portal or via phone and get a very fast response.
