Considered Multiple Products
1Password
Chose 1Password
1Password was ultimately selected due to the multiple security issues we have seen effect LastPass. We ended up not even evaluating LastPass due to the perception of them not being as secure as the alternatives.
Google Authenticator
Chose Google Authenticator
Google authenticator can only run on mobile devices, which makes for a more secure authentication flow.
1Password's desktop multi-factor authentication is easier to use, but it's the same device so is a weaker form of multi-factor authentication and thus less secure.
Chose Google Authenticator
The other apps I mention are password managers as well as opposed to stand alone authenticator apps. In terms of how it stacks up against authenticator only apps, I'm not sure as I haven't compared against those. Google Authenticator is great to recommend to people who don't …
Chose Google Authenticator
LastPass is the most similar to Authenticator that we're currently using, but I honestly wouldn't say they are all that similar. Authenticator is another step up, security-wise, from password managers as far as internet safety goes.
Chose Google Authenticator
Google Authenticator was the first one we used, and everyone is more used to Google products, and all our users have at least one Google product, and that made the implementation easier.

1Password (AgileBits, Inc)
1Password is a great tool when it comes to data security and managing your passwords. It is perfect for daily work that requires accessing a lot of different login credentials to different softwares, servers etc., so it is a great tool for all web developers and programmers, but also to project managers and other employees that have to login to multiple different services regularly.

Logging into my work accounts is where Google Authenticator works best. Also, I had a personal account get hacked. I had an account created to book hotels, but someone was constantly resetting my password. To prevent further hacking attempts, I set up Google Authenticator. I do not believe it would be appropriate for banking accounts.

I can only think of scenarios where Keeper is well-suited, in my experience. I work in small business (i.e., sole proprietor, 1 employee) environments and Keeper is well-suited to my needs. I imagine it would also be well-suited to multi-user environments, but would require a great deal more management and organization in such environments.

Pros
1Password (AgileBits, Inc)
  • Convenient secure access to my passwords anywhere.
  • Auto-generates secure long random passwords I would never be able to remember with so many I have to keep track of.
  • It's a small thing, but the numbers and punctuation are shown in different colors so you never need to wonder if it's a zero or a capital O.
  • Keywords let me organize my passwords however I want, by client, by function, whatever, the choice is up to me.
  • A handy place to keep contacts and all kinds of other data besides just passwords. Can add any fields I want, even attach files in the secure vault.

  • One strength is in how it checks identity to stop unwanted people from getting access.
  • Another strength is in cutting down on the frustration of users for the authentication process.
  • With the pandemic and needing to work away from the office it also provided additional security in keeping our network/infrastructure safe.

  • Ease of use. User find it simple and intuitive to use and I find they rapidly adjust to the software with minimal training.
  • Single-sign-on. Super important and really makes things simple for the users and easy to manage for us in the IT team.
  • Sharing features. We knew sharing was a key component of our password management solution. Keeper makes it easy for users and simple to administer.

Cons
1Password (AgileBits, Inc)
  • 1Password is so secure, that it lacks a self-managed "forget your password" functionality which means that as a manager, I have to approve password resets which may slow down some users.
  • On Chrome, the extension sometimes stops working when the browser is updated.

  • I once performed a factory reset of my smartphone which had Google Authenticator. I didn't have a backup for the device. When I restored my phone with the same google account, I was not able to restore the authenticator app settings. I had to add all the keys back into the app to use it. This is cumbersome, but I understand it is set up this way for security reasons.
  • I don't like the ease with which it lets you delete a key. If I accidentally delete a key, I am doomed to get my 2FA key reset, unless I still have the QR code saved somewhere.

  • I find that Keeper could use some work with their desktop interface, a sleeker and friendlier user interface would definitely benefit them.
  • Keeper doesn’t have a Security Dashboard, which makes it more complicated to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of your passwords.
  • The automatic web form filling is somewhat limited at the time, but im sure they will improve it soon.

Usability
1Password (AgileBits, Inc)
The 1Password app design is top notch, much better than a couple other password managers I've looked at. The app and service are very flexible, allowing for many different types of data storage. The browser extensions generally work very well, allowing for easy access to login information while using pretty much any modern web browser.

It's as easy as opening the app and what I need it for is there. I don't have to fumble with other accounts or getting something else to open it for me. I have all the access that I need for the use of the app within seconds and I can get access to the info that I need.

It's just easy to use, plain and simple. It has the complexity and user-interface that gives you confidence in its build but the ease-of-use that keep things from getting too complicated. A huge plus when you have to onboard new members of the team or summer interns when you need them to step in and make orders on your behalf.

Support Rating
1Password (AgileBits, Inc)
I have never had any issues with 1Password and they have always been able to answer my questions adequately resolve my issues. Furthermore, they have a robust peer forum that can be accessed. They have helpful "Get to know Apps", videos and many articles to assist in the process of using the product.

I have found Google’s support to be hit or miss. There are times when they are very responsive, and I get my issue resolved quickly, and there are times where a response from them takes weeks. There is no in-between. But my support experience with this particular product is nonexistent because I have not had a problem with it yet. Hopefully, we do not have any problems with it either.

Alternatives Considered
1Password (AgileBits, Inc)
1Password and LastPass are presently quite comparable in terms of the feature set they offer to their users. Unfortunately, it is their pricing models that differ, and is the only reason we felt the need to switch to LastPass from 1Password. LastPass simply offered better pricing for their business tier k(cheaper by $1/user/month.)

First, Google Authenticator meets the security requirements which should be considered "table stakes". Second, simplicity is critical. Many users don' understand why they are setting up MFA (or they just don't care), and so adding additional complications to their day-to-day is always challenging. When it is simple, it makes life a lot easier. Finally, trust (due to the brand name recognition, primarily) removes any notion of "what is this?" that the user may have from being required to install something on their personal device for work purposes.

I have used the Apple cloud, but if you forget your password into that, once again, you’re at the mercy of calling customer service. With Keeper, you can use the thumbprint option to log on, and there’s any of your needed passwords. It’s fast and simple, and you don’t have to wait online to unlock the app you’ve locked yourself out of.

Return on Investment
1Password (AgileBits, Inc)
  • It saves time, and time is a very expensive resource.
  • The account details and the sensitive business information in safe behind the 1Password encoding, while staying accessible to stakeholders
  • The password generation is a secure and quick way to help employees register new services on their own.

  • More secure data = less worried about a data breach.
  • Takes longer to log in, and if I don't have my phone then I have to go looking for it, so it really makes it so that you can't be without your phone, which in certain instances is annoying or not possible and can hold up work time.
  • Everyone is willing to use the same program because everyone likes Google—makes it easier to manage.

  • The spreadsheets and printed papers being passed around the office with passwords on them have gone! This is a huge security hole plugged.
  • Users actively use the software which says something - it is easy to use and intuitive. When software is not intuitive, it tends to not get used.
  • It gives IT control over who does what with passwords, and while difficult to quantify it is certainly a dramatically positive impact on the organization.
