Adobe Analytics

[Adobe Analytics] is best suited for digital analytics like web analytics and customer journey. It can handle a tremendous amount of data and the beauty of being online it will work faster than any other web analytics tool. Dashboards and reports are super easy to create with the drag and drop functionality.

Segment is a great choice for early-stage companies that are looking to experiment with different analytics software, and can afford scaling up Segment to $500-2k+ per month in costs. For companies/websites that require very simple analytics, like tracking conversion rates, a cheaper, less comprehensive piece of analytics software would likely be a bit more suitable.

Pros

Adobe Analytics

  • Adobe Analytics makes it very easy for anyone to quickly get in and get the information that they are looking for and pull a report if necessary.
  • Adobe Analytics allows us to tag thousands of events that we want to track and then see the data that is tracked based on these events. The set up is lengthy, but incredibly worth it once completed.
  • The audience segmentation tools in Adobe Analytics are great. We are able to get an incredibly detailed view of our customers and how they interact with our brand across our many channels.

Twilio Segment

  • Ease of event tracking. Just like Google Analytics, except you can warehouse your own data for a reasonable price. Warehousing your own event data is critical for companies that want to leverage data science at some point in their existence (which should be all companies these days).
  • Price. Startups can get by with the free version of Segment for a long time.
  • Integrations and sources. Segment makes it easy to warehouse other types of data such as Google AdWords, Facebook Ads, etc. It also allows you to send event data to 3rd party services like Google Analytics.

Cons

Adobe Analytics

  • Good array of visualization options but can have more customization for some common use cases
  • The log in process takes too much time sometimes and has scope for improvement
  • The behavior flow report needs to be in a more readable format and should have some more options to customize

Twilio Segment

  • Some connectors (EG HubSpot source) do not have necessary fields/data and it's unclear how to get these built out.
  • Some destination connectors have limitations and can require rework to make the data flowing thru Segment meet the requirements of the ad connectors.
  • Not much consistency across connectors.
  • At scale, can struggle with data volumes and loading data in one sync, causing data to change retroactively.

We've found multiple uses for Adobe Analytics in our organization. Each department analyzes the data they need and creates actionables based off of that data. For E-Commerce, we're constantly using data to analyze user engagement, website performance and evaluate ROI.

I am relatively new to Adobe Analytics (less than 1 year of use), and it has been a short period for ramp-up. The most complicated part is on the business side - understanding how my company has set up the deployments and figuring out how each sites differ in what is being measured.

Adobe SiteCatalyst has a good up-time track record, but there are cases in which the interface reports a "Network Acceleration" issue, which can be frustrating. There are also times when data can be "latent" for customers, but most of these cases are due to spikes in traffic or temporary server issues.

The speed with which visualizations and data sets are returned within the tool and or data warehouse can be dissapointing.

I give the rating of a 4 just because it seems more like a process that is failing. Any time I have put a request in, they have taken days, sometimes weeks, to get back to me and even then, the issue may still persist. I believe this is the biggest weakness of the Adobe Analytics tool and has a lot of room for improvement.

Over the period it took us to set up, we kept going back to their enablement team to help us with the setup, and they were always ready and were very helpful in the entire process. Even with their documentation, they took the time out to help us work through the process. We've never had a message/email unanswered for more than an hour on working days.

It was a one-day training several years ago that cost the organization several thousand dollars. There were only about 10 people in the training class. Adobe tried to cram so much information into that one-day class that none of our users felt like they really learned anything helpful from the experience. Follow-up training is too expensive

The online training for Adobe SiteCatalyst consists of short product videos. These are ok, but only go so far. For a while Adobe charged a fee for this, but recently made these available for free. There are many great blog posts that help users learn how to apply the product as well.

I can't say that the implementation of this product went much different than the implementation of just about any other product within the cloud. Granted there were times that things crawled to a slower pace because of the program, knowledge of the program, and connectivity. But these are all issues that one would expect when rolling out a release of a new cloud-based product.

Alternatives Considered

Adobe Analytics

While both platforms are powerful, the biggest differences that impact me in comparison are: Adobe Analytics is less user-friendly (has a steeper learning curve and requires more ongoing research), and it is much more expensive than Google Analytics (which is free). But one area where I prefer Adobe Analytics is in customer support, though that feature is lacking as support can be slow to respond.

Twilio Segment

I'm not sure these are "official competitors" (or alternatives) to Segment, but we use them in parallel for different goals. We use Datadog for logging and monitoring and we use Mixpanel to perform data analysis based on the data we gather using Segment (and other sources). I don't think we ever evaluated any other service vs. Segment. I think we got a recommendation on Segment, liked it and decided to use it (and we're happy with it since).

Return on Investment

Adobe Analytics

  • The ability to segment, classify data coming from different sources for making decisions that are not driven by just your marketing intuition but concrete insights.
  • I can aggregated statistics on an almost endless number of variables while still being able to dive deep and isolate individual pieces of content that may or may not be helping the webpage's overall statistics.
Anonymous | TrustRadius Reviewer

Twilio Segment

  • Saved a ton of time for setting up user tracking
  • Provided user data and tracking visibility to the entire team by turning on the mixpanel integration - this only took a week or so
  • It does get hard to manage all of your events in a clean spreadsheet - you must have 1 person who leads this initiative so that you keep track of events
