Adobe Experience Manager

Adobe Experience Manager is well suited for large organizations that need a powerful, comprehensive and robust CMS to manage multiple websites/translations of websites. It is also well suited for those who need a CMS that is well integrated with other systems such as analytics, targeting and email marketing, or those who want some fancy add ons like Adobe smart tags or AI-enhanced capabilities. It is also an expensive product with a steep learning curve, so it is less appropriate for smaller companies/individuals or those that don't need an overly robust system that is integrated with other digital marketing tools. If you're looking for a more affordable solution that is easy to pick up and play, go with a more basic WordPress or Joomla type option.

Figma

Figma is a fantastic collaborative digital design tool. It allows you to create prototypes and design documentation to the same level as Sketch or other tools and has a real-time collaboration feature built on top of it. It came out with that feature in mind so it's built around that idea as opposed to finding a way to put it in later. This is a real advantage as inviting people to see your work is incredibly easy and they can then use your work to communicate what's happening rather than spending many hours in meetings showing everyone from the file you have on a hard drive that no one else can open.

Pros

Adobe Experience Manager

  • Adobe Experience Manager keeps your content separate from your layout which allows for a lot of flexibility in how you display your content.
  • Adobe Experience Manager integrates really well with other Adobe products like Adobe Analytics.
  • Adobe Experience Manager 's drag and drop interface makes it fairly easy to utilize with minimal familiarity.

Figma

  • No installation needed! Functioning fully within a web browser, Figma can save on computer storage. And as an editor/designer, all the free space I can have is very much valued.
  • Figma allows for real-time collaboration. This is the best part of this product, as it removes some of the issues of designing "in a vacuum" when your designers are often working remotely.
  • Figma allows for ease of sharing and facilitating design feedback loops. Instead of having to use a plugin to a tool like InVision, we can quickly receive feedback within Figma and know that our comments are safely stored in the same place as the original designs.

Cons

Adobe Experience Manager

  • Upgrading and applying patches can be hit or miss - I recommend backups because of the potential to damage the existing infrastructure
  • Space management is an issue - every change or request takes up space that can be reclaimed, but only through a complicated procedure done through command prompts. There was no documentation for this on their site and we had to use a third party to create the procedure. It has to be run manually.
  • There isn't a good backup system, particularly one that can be scheduled to run reliably.

Figma

  • Default settings can often make it quite difficult to find specific assets when part of a complete UIUX build.
  • Out of the box training is probably necessary but is not readily available or always intuitive.
  • View options could be improved to make it easier to the casual user to understand what they are looking at within the design.
  • Timestamp would be a nice-to-have feature to track iterations.

We had and still have a fantastic experience using Adobe CQ. Lots of flexibility, great integration with other Adobe products we already use and a powerful technology make it a great fit for our corporate environment. Also as the community grows, it makes it easier to network with other developers and users to get new ideas on how to continue to get the best out of the software.

I personally feel that AEM is very intuitive to use from an authoring standpoint. The entire CMS was engineered around the author. Everything about AEM is geared to helping authors generate and maintain content. There are ways that tool tips can be customized so that any individual could simply hover over and be guided step by step on how to author web content

Our designers and developers love this tool because it eliminates the need to package designs into a separate folder. We used to upload all PSDs or In Design files in a dropbox folder, and this tool changes that. However, as a project manager, I find it a little clunky. Most of the time, all I want to do is view a specific design, but Figma defaults to be zoomed out and then you have to zoom in and scroll to the specific design in order to see it

Figma has a support team that can be reached at any time for urgent requests. We have never really needed it as most issues have well-documented solutions either on their forums or on Youtube. However although their SLA could definitely be better for starter plans (which currently has a wait time of 3 to 5 business days for support), it isn't much different from other companies in the space

Depending on your individual needs, It is really quite simple to create an authoring experience for a website that looks really good. I have been part of many implementations and many teams and have seen many projects that were super successful and others that were not implemented well. AEM has room for a lot of flexibility in the implementation process compared to other CMS like SharePoint

Alternatives Considered

Adobe Experience Manager

I think AEM is specific to the client's needs and is not necessarily comparable to all other platforms. However, when compared feature to feature I think AEM many times is a leader in the industry. While WordPress has progressed in the WYSIWYG interface it is not there still today and this is truly where AEM shines against all of the other CMS platforms.

Figma

Figma offers better pricing and is much simpler to use. The easy web or desktop app is effective and enough, no need for complicated solutions that Adobe provides. It can do pretty much everything we need it to do, however, Adobe will still dominate the space of design with its functions.

Return on Investment

Adobe Experience Manager

  • Our brand requires a high level of polish and crisp functionality. AEM provides that for us. We do look as good as possible and it reflects well on our brand.
  • We can product new pages rapidly with our modules and so we can keep our content fresh and relevant.
  • Our brand value has risen considerably since we polished our web properties with AEM.

Figma

  • The most significant ROI has been time. It has saved our design team a lot of time that they used to spend packaging up designs and delivering them.
  • Figma can sometimes be a little confusing for our clients who have access. There is more time spent onboarding new users than with other apps we've used.
  • The comment function allows us to house any notes for the developer on the designs themselves instead of having to send separate documentation.
