Apple iCloud

If you own devices on a multi-platform of Windows and Mac, iCloud is a great storage option. First, you do get some free storage when you own an Apple device. Second, if you own an Apple mobile device, you can place whatever file folders you desire under the iCloud folder and have mobile access. I have never owned anything but an Apple iPhone so I wouldn't know about access for Android.

OneNote

Organizing data and information objects, according to your own logic of structure. For example, organizing all info about the cases you are working on, so each case will have a dedicated section or a page. Collaborating with colleagues who are working together on a project, so they can share a notebook, a section, or a page, and from there share meetings notes, lists of action items, links to other resources, and more.

Pros

  • Efficiency. Apple iCloud can be set up to automatically place your files for mobile access. I have needed to access a file from my office computer countless times and iCloud has made that possible.
  • Security. I know security is always an issue and I have never felt that any of my files have been compromised. I believe Apple has a reputation to uphold and works hard to maintain secure cloud-based storage.
  • Multi-platform. I use Apple iCloud on my devices, my personal Mac computer and my Windows based office computer. I love how I can save or retrieve a personal or work file at any time on any of my devices.

  • It makes it really easy to capture notes in different formats - text, pictures, copy & paste, videos, etc.
  • It makes it really easy to organize notes by using the concept of notebooks - which are thematic ways to organize your notes
  • The mobile app is easy to use and navigate, which means I can always have my notes with me, even if I'm not in front of my computer

Cons

  • The Notes app in iCloud.com lacks the same functionality as iOS/Mac, in that it doesn't recognize when you've inserted a table into a note.
  • Pages, Numbers, and Keynote aren't as up-to-date as their iOS and Mac counterparts.
  • The level of editability (adding colors, etc.) isn't there in iCloud Drive like it is with Google Drive.

  • There are times that formating can be difficult, especially if you're copying from other sources.

If you are only interested in using OneNote, without using other MS Office products, then I would recommend using Evernote instead. OneNote does, however, come as part of Office Home and Student, which includes the three base products, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Those products are useful for students as well as most office employees, and getting the package may be worth the price.

I really don't see any lag time when I access files from Apple iCloud. Files are accessible immediately from what I can see. Honestly, I probably don't access large content files very often so that may be a factor. In addition, I have never noticed iCloud being the cause of any slow access to a file or slow down any of my computers or mobile devices.

Alternatives Considered

Apple iCloud is great for keeping me on the same page with all of my devices as far as photos, contacts, calendars, etc., are concerned. However, Box or Dropbox are easier to use for collaboration. I like the ability in Dropbox or Box to have a folder on my desktop that auto-shares files with my colleagues and clients. I use both services.

For me, OneNote is way simpler and easier to use. Furthermore, the storage options was one of the key factors that I choose OneNote. Since it's a software for my PC, I can just store all the documents on my computer and I will never have the fear of running out of space and then having to spend extra money on expanding my storage capacity.

Return on Investment

  • Built into Apple devices. It's one less expense to worry about.
  • Apple devices are more expensive, but ease of use and features such as iCloud are huge value adds.

  • The most positive impact is being able to store my personal notes and information indefinitely. There is no fixed format. It is not very constraining, and I can go back years later and still search and find information.
  • You never have to store paper binders or spiral notebooks, only to have them sit in storage and forget what's in them.
