I think EstimateOne may have a broader database (not sure); but certainly I feel it is very thorough in the searchability for suitable projects

Chose Microsoft Dynamics SL
Dynamics SL provides built in complex project accounting flexibility with the benefit to accommodate additional complexity with customization tools to enhance the system capabilities and fill requirement gaps either as to process, reporting, or controls.
Chose Microsoft Dynamics SL
I have been on this product for 17 years. I have worked with Great Plains and have worked with products in the Health Care industry and believe this product pulls in all the main functionality into basic core modules and allows users to quickly grasp how to use the product. …
Chose Microsoft Dynamics SL
Of the comparable mid-range ERP systems, Dynamics SL competes at the lower end based on price, but also above the high-end based on flexibility, data, and reporting. Being able to stay with the same core accounting from a $100 million dollar company to a $3 billion dollar …
Chose Microsoft Dynamics SL
They were both pretty easy to use, but I started using Microsoft Dynamics SL so it was a matter of knowing and becoming familiar with this program first. I became very accustomed to the modules and how to navigate the program.
Chose Microsoft Dynamics SL
I have used QuickBooks when I was in college and I did enjoy it mainly because that was my first experience with an accounting product like that. I did not switch to Microsoft Dynamics; it was the product used in the first company I received a job in. Although I did not select …

Chose Microsoft Dynamics SL
QuickBooks is a good entry point software. Dynamics is the next logical progression in a company's growth. Dynamics SL will allow for rapid growth and provide the necessary controls that QuickBooks is lacking.
Chose Microsoft Dynamics SL
I have evaluated many competitive products in the past. Dynamics Nav, Mass90, Dynamics GP, Platinum and others. This product is ahead in TCO and flexibility. Since the customization uses standard Microsoft tools (VBA, Visual Studio, and MS SQLServer, Object Model) it is much …
Chose Microsoft Dynamics SL
I would love to have the Quorum product for our company; it is what the future-focused players in the industry are using.
Chose Microsoft Dynamics SL

I haven't used any other products for Construction Accounting Software. I've heard of many but don't have any experience reviewing Construction Accounting Software.
Chose Vista
It's been a while since I've used this, but I found JD Edwards completely cumbersome and like a database that hadn't been updated in 10-15 years. I much prefer Viewpoint and I think that Viewpoint still has the ability to improve on its user interface.
Chose Vista
It doesn't COINS was a DOS program and VP is a windows program.
Chose Vista
Vista is made for a specific size company with limited customization needed. It is a great tool until you get to the much bigger size companies.
Chose Vista
Viewpoint is everything from A-Z not only for finance and accounting functions but for project managers as well. Epicor did not have as many functions.
Chose Vista
Vista works with every department linking all data together for everyone to access. The network and portal provide more support than I have ever experienced before.
Chose Vista
There are more options and data kept in Vista that allows us to work on data-driven business decisions. Vista is flexible - we've had to create work arounds in some situations and we've been able to identify those quickly and easily.
Chose Vista
I didn't choose any of these products, they were all in place when I started. Spreadsheet server is easier than creating and manipulating reports in Vista. B2W is used for field logs, equipment management, and bids/estimates. B2W Track and Maintain are easier to configure, is …

If you are looking for new opportunities to get in front of builders and architects (indirectly) then I think EstimateOne may be a solution, if you believe in your product and am willing to work on larger projects. If your product is niche or in short supply, you may struggle.

In the service series, there is a weakness in applying revenue recognition concepts which are a strong point of the project series. It is difficult to get a period sensitive WIP that could be recreated at any time for a point in time (fiscal period).

The company has made a commitment to the use of the Vista products and continue to move forward trying to implement more with the Vista HR Management. From timekeeping to onboarding in the near future we strive to look for better ways to utilize the products for our accounting and payroll purposes.

Pros
  • Document access to projects on tender.
  • Easy access to tenders and all commercial projects and their status.
  • Good communication details with estimators.

  • Ability to add companies, and sub-accounts on the fly allows for the growth of the system without conversions, and flexible reporting allows for the quick utilization of the data.
  • Multi-Company allows for easy and automated data entry and reporting across multiple legal entities and business segments.
  • Multi-Company also allows for easy centralization of business processes (AP check writing and Fixed Assets for example), while spreading data entry across the enterprise.
  • Ability to Copy/Paste into Dynamics SL has always been a strength- especially from Excel. The additional power of being able to use Excel for a myriad of calculations, including complex allocations, and formatting the result into a JE to paste directly into the Journal Entry Screen has saved countless hours in data-entry, and made re-use of complex items very easy.

  • Being on a Microsoft SQL platform enables easier development and integration with 3rd party software.
  • It has a very flexible User Defined fields and tables system to allow customizing to the user's needs without breaking standard features.
  • Security management is very granular.

Cons
  • Could do regional areas rather than state-based, we are based in Northern Victoria and we find it useless to have to pay for NSW access. We are not interested in anything more than 150 km north of the Murray River on the NSW side.
  • Subscription could also be regional based, rather than just state based.

  • When we have a lot of invoices rather than just a few large invoices, we can be frustrated by how long it takes Flexible Billings to generate a lot of invoices
  • It would be nice if Dynamics SL had an easy integration to some of the nicer salestax tools such as Avalara and CCH.
  • It would be nice if the fixed assets module and electronic banking were not third party.

  • Their payroll module is terribly slow and very clunky.
  • Job costing parameters are very strict and limited.
  • Each module interface has too many forms and screens.
  • There is too much flexibility regarding where to put information into the system. There isn't one place to do anything, which creates confusion for staff.

Unfortunately, Dynamics' lack of ability to smoothly integrate with our CRM system is causing us to look at other solutions. The efficiencies that we gain by using Dynamics for our day to day accounting are lost in the constant headaches of getting sales quotes to import properly into the system for invoicing. Another major issue for us has been budgeting and reporting. We currently do all of our budgeting and board reporting in Excel, which is too time consuming and inefficient, especially when a system as robust as Dynamics should easily be able to handle this relatively simple task.

It is extremely customizable and tracks so many complicated costs very well, more-so than other construction software programs out there that we've used in the past. It is also not an easy program to use for those even slightly not comfortable with a computer. The help sections/knowledge base could be better organized and updated more. It is a very powerful software program for our business and we rely on it hugely to see how our projects are running in real-time.

Usability
EstimateOne is easy to use, the user interface is designed to be simple yet functional - many other platforms I have used are much more cumbersome to navigate and don't offer as much functionality. Everything has been thought out well with EstimateOne - it seems to have been designed by people who have worked in the industry.

SL itself is relatively easy to use and most of the Help Files documentation is well kept and outstanding in the amount of information that is given. Most end users pick up the functions quickly and are off and running after some limited training. There will always be questions and research to be done, but overall SL is relatively easy to follow for a seasoned user

Reliability and Availability

We have had only one unplanned outage for 2 hours in the last 30 months. We shut down for 30 min to 1 hour once a month, but that is for Microsoft OS updates to the servers. Being a 24/7 world wide operation, the reliability is really important. We do get an 8 hour window on the weekend that we can be down for a short period to install Microsoft Dynamics SL updates, but we do not have many of those. On our last version upgrade, we shut the users out at 9:30 am and were fully operational in less than 6 hours. The upgrade was New SQL server, New SL server and 2 new Citrix servers.

No issue downloading the reports - I do find sometimes it is easier to export and save than it is to print to a pdf. Options on the different reports not consistent. You can print a couple projects on the JC Contract Status Report - but you have to do each project for the JC Cost by contract item - when neither one is a drill down - not a big deal

Many times support will tell you that your issue is an identified bug and will be scheduled in the future to be fixed in a future release. The knowledgebase has gotten worse in recent years and much more difficult to use. many times you can't find the error during the search

Support has deteriorated greatly than what it was years ago when we joined. We always used to get a call back same day and within an hour or so for critical issues. Sometimes now it's no response or very delayed. Knowledge of the support team is also lacking. Many issues we figure out workarounds ourselves instead of calling

For a small business - this program is well used in the accounting and operations. The two different work plans are set up for success. Alot of the programs we do not use - but like the reports that are generated - one disadvantage if you do not know crystal reports you cannot edit your form to meet your needs so there is a lot of printing different several forms to get all the information you need.
