From AppRiver to Office 365, the support crew was exceptionally detailed and helpful. For new users, distribution groups, members on lists, and adding supplementary email addresses to current profiles for my teams, they led me through the process.

Mimecast
This is for any business that needs secure, tamper-resistant, long-term email storage. Mimecast cloud archive is the answer. Easy self-service user interface, Admin interface is generally pretty usable as well with a good level of granular permissions for delegation to support staff. It allows cost savings with email storage by implementing retention policies and offloading the storage to Mimecast.

AppRiver is great for both small and large organizations. Small businesses are unlikely to have much if any technical support staff available to them, for which AppRiver would be a great help. Likewise for large companies, having AppRiver can save your tech support team from dealing with basic, common, and repetitive application support, and allowing them to better focus on more important tasks at hand.

Pros
Mimecast
  • Sync and Recover is a great tool for when you need to recover emails quickly or in bulk.
  • The archive is nested in the mail protection admin portal, so it is easy to navigate between the recent mail in the protection portal (limited window of time) and the archive when searching for emails during investigations or troubleshooting.
  • The additional protection feature allows scanning of emails that land in the archive. This helps with internal to internal emails that might have been malicious, for instance from a compromised account.
  • The Mimecast for Outlook add-in is nice, although you can access it from the web as well, for seeing your own archives. If users are missing an email, they can look there on their own without submitting an IT support ticket.
  • We do not allow end users to restore their own, but that is a feature that exists as well.

  • Very useful daily quarantine list emailed to users.
  • Suspicious emails can be viewed online in their sandbox to check validity before releasing from quarantine.
  • Multiple ways to filter emails (domain, email address, text, etc)
  • Link protection is one of the newest options available and we absolutely love it!!

Cons
Mimecast
  • The system runs slowly at times.
  • There are so many features, it can be difficult to find exactly how to perform some actions.
  • Emails are not automatically shown in their native format when searched you must click on the email and then request it be formatted in the proper format (HTML, plaintext, etc.).

  • They do not support DMARC and DKIM at this time and I don't know when or if they ever will.
  • Their SPF record is not great and can possibly cause issues, at least that is what my support company has told me.
  • Scanning of links in emails seems super limited and or non-existent. THings get through with completely bad malicious all the time and I assume they are not scanning them or they don't have a proper AV on their end.
  • Once a domain is whitelisted any bad emails that may be spoofing that email domain are let through and no other filters apply to the emails. It's frustrating to have to white list 20+ individual email addresses from a company and not be able to white list just the domain and not feel secure doing that.

The system does what we require of it and the support is good. No need to replace it at the moment.

Usability
Mimecast
It is easy to use. Maybe I am bias as I have been using the system for many years however there are many search parameters you can use to narrow down exactly what you're looking for or even using the global keyword search is easy. You can also use it to extract a large number of emails into CSV or export to a mailbox.

Reliability and Availability
Mimecast
We have never experienced an outage with Mimecast, as such we can only provide a ten for this score. It is incredibly reliable and regardless of time, day of the week or public holiday, the tool is there, available and ready to use without any problems at all. In the event there is a planned maintenance, we are given plenty of notice, time frames and expected impact to services

Support Rating
Mimecast
It does a good job. The support team of the product was good and responsive and was also able to fix the issues I was experiencing at the time. It isn't perfect and takes some time to set up properly in the environment but once set up the product does what it is supposed to do which is what you are paying for.

AppRiver's live support is above what I expected, and I use it exclusively. I always get a professional, courteous, and knowledgeable tech that is easy to understand within a few minutes of placing a call. If you do have to leave a message they have always promptly returned my call.

Mimecast
One of the big features of Mimecast is the ability to send large files. We used to use CItrix Sharefile for this but switched over to Mimecast's LFS for one large reason...since we are archiving all of our mail in Mimeast anyway we would have wanted these attachments, even if large, also available to if we go back to look at old emails. However just for usability sake I think Citrix Sharefile's large file send is more polished and probably works a little better. We just choose to use the Mimecast so we had a one stop shop when it came to email archiving

AppRiver requires the least amount of management time, the pricing is better and the minimums are such that almost all SMB's won't be buying shelfware. If you are an MSP, become a partner and you will see spam problems become a thing of the past.

Return on Investment
Mimecast
  • I can't put an exact dollar figure on it but Mimecast makes our company more efficient when it comes to email search and discovery.
  • Being heavily regulated it's great to have peace of mind when we're audited and I can just say we have Mimecast. Check that box off!
  • We were quite relieved when Mimecast stopped inbound attachments infected with WannaCry.
  • I enjoy the benefits of a cloud service so I don't have to manage hardware, deal with upgrades, or figure out complicated licensing schemes.

  • Efficiency, teams adapt quickly to changes or new business needs.
  • Support gives us alternatives on how to establish new timings for new business lines on email.
  • An increase in profit owing to a reduction in the amount of assistance our in-house IT staff is required to provide.
