New Relic
I appreciate that New Relic is easily integrated into applications for APM and infrastructure for monitoring. Our applications are Ruby on Rails apps and getting them reporting into New Relic is easy to implement. In most cases, it just requires adding the "newrelic" gem and updating the "newrelic.yml" configuration file. Just this simple addition to a project gives us an entrypoint to analyzing performance. We use the New Relic Infrastructure agent by default on all of our cloud based servers. We have this set up with Chef so we don't even think about it; we just spin servers up and go. Minutes later they're reporting into New Relic. We use Terraform to automatically create monitors so we can keep track of the essentials like core processes, disk, CPU, and memory.

Zabbix
Zabbix is probably the best classical monitoring software out there that is also FOSS. It is superior to Nagios and other similar software from implementation to utilization, and equal in capabilities. It is equally capable to SolarWinds (and competitors), and more expandable (thanks to the support of user-generated XML templates), but at the cost of time, knowledge, and effort. It serves a different market than pure cloud monitoring solutions, though they do overlap heavily, so it probably is not as well suited to cloud-only monitoring (though it can be set up to work effectively in this role as well). However, given the flexibility of on-prem monitoring as well, it can be an option in conjunction with, or in place of the cloud-only monitoring if that is a need.Overall, I would put Zabbix on par with SolarWinds and the main differentiator is where are the costs going to be paid - in end-user training and support of Zabbix or in the commercial, ease of use provided by SolarWinds (and competitors).

Pros
New Relic
- New Relic lets you drill down into the nitty-gritty of your application, breaking down requests however far you want in order to inspect the performance of your application throughout the request lifecycle.
- New Relic offers many integrations with other services and technologies, making it easy to get it set up and start using it.
- New Relic offers many views and types of visualizations to help you understand what's going on in as much detail as you want to know.

Zabbix
- Zabbix is able to provide us a single pane of glass for monitoring. It can handle Systems, Database, Network and application level alerts and send those alerts to the appropriate parties.
- Zabbix graphs all metrics that come in. This means it's easy to spot trends and create alerts based on when those trends cross user-defined thresholds.
- Zabbix allows for the escalation of issues. If someone sleeps through an alert in the middle of the night, it can easily be escalated to the next tier.

New Relic
- Cloud-centric / OS-centric. There is no/limited ability to query metrics with an agent installed.
- Insights-based queries (dashboards and alerts) are limited to 1000 (soon to be 2000) records and that doesn't work for enterprise scale.
- NRQL is awesome -- except when it isn't. The replacement QL is more robust but is significantly more complex to learn.
- No agent management tools in the platform. And, yes, you will want agent management tools after the first dozen or so deployments.

- The first time that you use Zabbix, it may not be immediately obvious where everything is or how to find exactly what you want, but I think that it's UI is constantly improving with each new release. Training is also a great resource to resolve these types of problems.
- While Zabbix allows in-depth customization of alerts to various applications (such as Slack, HipChat, Mattermost, or even SMS, etc.), I would love to see these options as built-in upon installation.
- I have personally never found the "Maps" feature of Zabbix incredibly useful as I find it complicated to configure, but I should probably investigate its documentation further.

I have not yet found any similar product that offers me this range of features to help us keep our online service fast and reliable. Besides this, New Relic is constantly evolving by adding new plugins to emerging technologies and platforms. Server performance measuring features are a key point as our user database grows.

It is free. It didn't cost anything to implement (other than my time and the cost incurred for it) and it is filling a badly needed gap in our IT infrastructure. Support is available if we have issues and can be done annually or paid for on a per incident basis as needed. Expansion, updates, and all other future lifecycle activities are likewise free of cost, so as long as someone is able to implement/maintain the software (and the OSS project is maintained) then I imagine the company will never leave it.

New Relic interface can be tricky to setup sometimes, especially on dashboards, but the overall usability is great. We also find particularly interesting the chart creation tools. There are no major issues that prevented us using any of their services.

There are times I feel that the initial support is lacking. And in some cases the automated responses of not hearing anything are annoying if the reason why there has been no movement is because we are still waiting to hear back from NR support. So, i think they should loose the automation as it can seem disingenuous

The setup is the most time-consuming portion of using zabbix. It takes a lot of effort to shape it into a usable format and even then it can get very messy. It's not exactly intuitive and as mentioned the UI seems a bit antiquated. If I was to roll out a monitoring solution from scratch, I'd probably look for alternatives which are easier to use and maintain.

The documentation was clear and concise; the only issue we ran into was custom application naming. Due to HTTPD mod_fcgid and the need for the application name to be set in php.ini (not in .htaccess or the virtual host directive) ... we had issues setting this up.

We are a mainly Windows environment, so it would be useful if we could have used Active Directory to deploy agents. As of version 4.2, Zabbix has announced a new agent MSI file to allow exactly that. Unfortunately, we didn't have that option. Also, for Linux and MAC deployments, there is no simple way to deploy that. Using remote scripts you may be able to create something, but most places will opt for either SNMP (agentless) or manual installation of agents to add to Zabbix. A way of deploying agents via discovery would go a long way to helping in the adoption of the tool.

Alternatives Considered
New Relic
We had originally looked into CloudWatch to monitor our resources since we have our stack built in AWS, but found that it would take additional work to setup the dashboards, alerts, and details that we wanted to see in our reports. It was worth the additional investment for us to get the data we needed with less work.

Zabbix had the best support for the devices I initially had in my network, its ability to adapt and change has made it my Swiss Army knife of monitoring tools. While it could benefit greatly from a moderated zabbix community, its support from the open source community has filled the whole rather well.

- By integrating Zabbix with Rundeck, we have been able to auto-resolve issues in our infrastructure which means lesser on-call alerts.
- Zabbix and PagerDuty let us response to business critical issues instantly.
- Zabbix dashboards and screens let us get an insight into the status of our infrastructure visually.
